Vehicle Detail

Very nice driver quality CA. T-6 notchback hardtop. Extremely dry and rust-free, never crashed, numbers matching car with a documented history of owners and approx. 175k original miles. To make a very long story short, it was purchased in 2011 from the widow of its 3rd owner who was an elderly enthusiast in Pasadena, CA. The car is currently in southern Maryland but was in southern CA. from new until 2011. It is one of the driest 356 cars I've ever seen. Other than rust in the battery box, (which was replaced in 2011), it can accurately be described as rust-free. During an extensive overhaul last year, the rear torsion bars were removed revealing an extremely solid torsion tube. It was rust-proofed before the car was re-assembled. This is all photo-documented. The engine and transaxle were completely rebuilt in 2011 to a high standard using factory parts with the exception of Shasta Engineering forged aluminum pistons. The engine had a 90mm "big bore" kit previously installed w/ NSU cast iron cylinders. A new SC cam was installed as well. The Zenith carbs have been rebuilt and re-bushed, the car runs extremely well and smooth. All suspension wear items were replaced including new spring plate bushings and new Koni adjustable shocks all around. Gauges were rebuilt and restored by North Hollywood Speedometer. New tires all around in 2011 as well with a professional 4-wheel alignment. Once again, this is a driver quality, unrestored car that drives extremely well. It has an interesting history and was said to be Jack McAfee's personal car for the first years of its life, but this could not be confirmed. Unfortunately, the first 3 owners including Mr, McAfee are no longer with us. Due to a tragic computer hard drive crash, dozens of good photos I had of this car are lost. I scrounged what I could for this listing, a detailed story about the acquisition and rebuilding of the car can be found on this forum thread, as well as more photos and details: EDIT: eBay will not allow me to post this link. Please email me and I will provide the link to this thread. Thanks. I will of course guarantee that my description of the car is accurate, including the amazing dry condition of the body and tub. It has never been restored but at some point, (1970s), it was painted red and interior changed to black. The car was originally black with a red interior, which it should be returned to if restored, IMO. The dash is still black. Please feel free to email me through this site with any questions and a phone # if you'd like to discuss it over the phone. Inspections are welcome but the car is down in rural southern Maryland, safely tucked away in a heated garage. It still has CA. registration with a clean title and its original black CA. license plates. I'm sure that I'm forgetting something, I'll amend the listing if I remember anything significant. I did all of the work on the car including the engine rebuild and I am listing it for my close friend who owns it. The relationship between us, and between myself and the car are detailed in the link posted above. Serious offers will be considered but most likely the auction will run its course. Thanks for looking! On Dec-17-12 at 11:58:27 PST, seller added the following information: Just to clarify: The inside of the torsion tube was treated with a rust-preventative coating, not the entire car. The finish that you see on the wheel wells and chassis is original to the car. It was a black car from the factory. The inside of the rear torsion bar tube was not rusted at all, the coating was merely an additional safeguard against moisture in the future. This is one dry car. Also, in case it was not clear in the listing, this is a "Super" or S model. In 1962, there was the standard, (or "normal"), 1600, the "S" and the Super 90. It was originally rated @ 75hp. With the 90mm pistons/cylinders and 356SC cam, it can be reasonably estimated to have about 90-100hp now. It accelerates and pulls very nicely and is as smooth as they come. Everything was checked and measured in the recent rebuild and all worn parts replaced. The gearbox was gone through and re-sealed, the synchros are great and it shifts nicely with no issues or noises. New rear axle bearings and seals were installed. For the link that could not be posted here, go to Pelican Parts off-topic board and search "Seahawk 356 project". It contains reams of information and photos that will not fit here, including detailed photos of rebuild. There are receipts for all work done in the last 2 years and quite a bit of old records going back decades. There is also a small logbook that goes back to 1967. It is a matching #s car, chassis/engine/transmission. On Dec-22-12 at 20:33:21 PST, seller added the following information: I made a typing error in my last update, the pistons installed are 86mm, not 90mm. Stock pistons are 82.5mm and the "big bore" sets for these engines are always 86mm, as far as I know. They are forged aluminum, 9.25:1 CR sold by Shasta engineering. I bought them directly from Duane Spencer, a legend in the world of 356 cars and the author of "Porsche 356 Performance Guide", which is one of the "must have" books in any 356 library. I also got invaluable help and advice from Duane and used his former machine shop in Los Angeles for the rebuild in 2010. He sadly passed away since, this had to be one of, if not the last sets of pistons he sold. The HP estimates above are accurate according to Duane, who had dyno'ed countless 356 engines and based these #s on the recipe used for my rebuild. Another way to view the BBS thread on the car is to simply google "seahawk 356 project" and then click on the Pelican Parts BBS thread. It will be the first or second search result on the page. Thanks to all for the interest in this car, (lots of watchers), I think that the winning bidder will be quite happy with the condition of it and especially the way it drives. Merry x-mas and Happy Holidays to all!
