Vehicle Detail
This car is a rare original coupe with lots of factory options: air conditioning, vinyl top, power disc brakes, power steering, high back buckets, Magnum 500 wheels, automatic, and a 302 V8. This combination makes this car safe and very comfortable for regular use now 43 years after production. And, it still turns heads. Over the years, we have restored the car to ‘cruise-in’ but not show condition. We replaced the interior upholstery and it gets a lot of compliments. That work included correct standard high back seat upholstery, headliner, carpet, and package shelf. The door panels are original and very good. Around a decade ago, we had the exterior repainted in the original red single-stage paint color. We've also replaced the brakes, exhaust, starter, generator, fuel pump, points, plugs and wires, and much of the chrome. Currently, the car runs well, sounds great, and drives well around the neighborhood. Email me for videos. Seats look yellow in photo but they are jet black. We have not been using the car (last plated in 1981) and are now losing our climate controlled storage (the car's been protected indoors for 32 years). We have decided it's time to sell the car and give up the ideas of playing with it when we have more time for the hobby. For anyone thinking about using this car for extensive driving, I would recommend a careful reinspection of the brakes and I would consider replacing the front shocks to improve its handling. Also, I would rebuild the carb so that it will start without priming after sitting (I have the kit, and it goes with the car). If you plan to drive it in the winter, you'll have to replace the heater core under the dash, that is leaky (see car's history in the next paragraph). We have solved the problem by bypassing the core. The air conditioning has not been restored, but is complete and original. We've replaced some of the more tarnished brightwork, like the bumpers, but most is original and in good condition. I have many extra parts you might want that were collected by my friend, the second owner of the car and a Mustang enthusiast, who planned to restore it before he sold it to me eighteen years ago. Here is rest of the history of this unusual car. It was originally purchased at Capital Ford in Raleigh NC, and was serviced there regularly for ten years. In 1981, it was left there for service for so long that it's ownership was assumed for unpaid storage charges by the dealership as a mechanics lien. It was purchased from the dealership by a friend of mine, who was a Mustang enthusiast and close friends with the service manager, who had alerted him to the car and my friend bought the car and took ownership by bill of sale in 1982. It was last registered with NC DMV in 1981. The car sat covered in his barn until I bought it in 1994, along with a couple of other classic cars, when he sold a large farm farm to land developers, where he was storing an incredible collection of stuff in several barns. I bought this Mustang for my father-in-law, who wanted to put back on the road. My father-in-law was then recently retired, could fix anything, and had a Ford Model A and a Ford 1952 grey-belly tractor that he used for a large garden. He loved Fords; his father-in-law had been the service manager at High Point Ford. He was very excited about this Mustang, and I saw it as a rare original car with no rust and never molested, which is my favorite kind of classic car! Together, he and I worked on it, off and on, first in his shop and then mine, to discover what was wrong with it and to make it reliable. It was at his shop five years and mine the last thirteen. Our first discovery was that the engine was missing the harmonic balancer, that we never could really explain. Once we replaced that, the engine started and ran well, and we next found it had a leaky heater core that dripped antifreeze onto the passenger floorboard, which seemed to explain the new OEM heater core we found in the trunk (goes with the car). We learned that replacement of the core requires partial removal of the dash, and that this job probably would have cost more than the value of the car when it was abandoned at the dealership and then assumed by mechanic's lien. Incidentally, since then I have gone through the process of obtaining clear NC title by indemnity bond. (I now have a clear title in hand). Please see payment information for the process of viewing, bidding, making payment of deposit, paying the balance of the purchase price, and picking up the car so that this transaction can be seamless and the car can be yours to enjoy. I'll be happy to answer any additional questions. Send me your email for questions or to request a couple of videos of the car running, that show the engine compartment also. I have a smartphone and will pick up email regularly. You can view the car for a few days prior to auction end in N.C. if you like (see payment info section). Drew Jones, Chapel Hill, NC On Nov-28-12 at 15:24:48 PST, seller added the following information: I'll paste in my reply to a recent inquiry.. I'm inexperienced in selling on eBay and should have posted these.Regarding prolonged storage and the fuel tanks and lines: When we first worked with the car in the mid 90s, we encountered no gas line problems, but added an in-line filter, and have stored the car with fuel stabilizer. Recently when I got it running again, I flushed the tank and found the gas yellowed, but no particulate matter. The in-line filter and carb inlet filter were both fine (clean) but the fuel pump didn't last long after starting. So, I replaced the pump with an original.Undercarriage, no photos, sorry. I'll snap some in the daylight tomorrow and send them along to you if you reply with your email address, and I'll post them to the site. The videos: sorry I didn't have luck figuring out how to post them. I've been emailing them who send me their email address. That seems to work tine. They show the engine compartment, with the engine running so you can hear it. The trunk is very clean, with the original spare tire, jack and lug wrench and tie-downs. The spare is a raised white letter GOODYEAR POLYGLAS RADIAL. The mat is aftermarket black ribbed vinyl. I'll post pictures of that tomorrow as well.Drew- arjones7
