Vehicle Detail
Up for Auction1976 BMW 2002tii Two-Door Coupe, 2.0LWell, here is my 1976 BMW 2002Tii Two-Door Coupe. I hate to part with this thing! I have thoughts still about finishing it, getting it cleaned up and painted. Rough as it is, I always enjoyed getting behind the wheel. But the reality is - this is a project car for someone with the time and money to finish it and make it right. Neither time nor money are in particular abundance in my corner at the moment. Of all the automobiles I've owned this one has been the most fun to drive by far. Second gear is fantastic - you can drive around town all day in second gear with plenty of power and torque and you can go from zero to 50 no problem. This car is not a real Tii. The body is that of a 1976 2002a - a 2002 Automatic that has been converted to mostly Tii specs (the automatic bodies I was led to believe have a slightly wider transmission hump for easier installation of the 1982 320is 5-speed manual transmission with a Metric Mechanics short-throw shift kit). I think I might be the second owner of the body. I purchased it from a New Jersey fellow in about 1995 or 1996 and installed parts I had been picking up here and there. It has installed in it: - a 1970 2002 engine block - a 1975 2002 cylinder head (ported and polished) - a 1974 Tii exhaust manifold - a 1974 Tii fuel injection system (when first assembling this vehicle I bought a rebuilt Keugelfischer - a replacement fuel injection unit - rebuilt by one of the original German BMW engineers - it was purchased for more than $800 back then and installed). It is in excellent shape and it has less than 12,000 miles on it also. - a 1974 Tii gas tank and sending unit The block had a high-end 92-degree cam in it (for naturally-aspirated engines) which I replaced with a new 88-degree cam (more suited for fuel-injected engines) or it might be the other way around. I can't remember which. I installed a Jacobs Omnipack electronic ignition module to replace the points and I never had any problem with it. The battery location has been moved to the trunk between the shock towers. A battery box is included; a battery is not. Engine was a fresh, careful rebuild done with Chris Isaacson at Stone Racing in Philadelphia sixteen years ago when I lived there, but has less than 12,000 miles on it. I moved to New Mexico fifteen years ago, but didn't drive the car much and for the last 10 years it has not been registered. The car has been started and run at least once every two, maybe three, months and many, many times in the last month since I had my friend Chris Isaacson at Stone Racing in Philadelphia go over the car and get it running again in preparation for this sale. The mileage listed in the description I don't believe is correct - that figure is something I remember from a replacement speedometer which has since been replaced. When the engine was rebuilt sixteen years ago, the following items were also installed new and have less than 12,000 miles on them as well: - Ported and Polished head - Clutch pressure plate and throw out bearing, - Clutch master cylinder - Brake master cylinder - Kuegefischer fuel injection (a replacement fuel injection unit - rebuilt by one of the original German BMW engineers and purchased for more than $800 back then and installed) - Motor mounts During the assembly years ago Chris and I installed: - A 25mm front sway bar with urethane bushings. - An adjustible rear sway bar (24mm I think) with urethane bushings. - Bilsteins Sport or HD shock absorbers all around. - Tii front struts. - 1974 Tii rear subframe assemblies and differential. - Rear brakes modified with larger drum brakes from a 320is - a kit. - A Manual 5-speed transmission from a 1982 320is, with a Metric Mechanics short-throw shift kit. - A pair of European-style front flush-mount turn signals. - I've put fuel filters at the front of the car right before the mechanical fuel injection (Keugelfischer) and one in the trunk as the fuel line comes out of the tii gas tank. - There is no broken glass and all the locks and hinges work. Blinkers, horn and brakes all work. - Locking gas cap (works). - Recaro seats from a 1982 320is in the front. There is no back seat. Chris and I also replaced the center panel on the back of the car with factory NOS sheet metal to facilitate the changing of the later-style tail lights to the old-style round tail lights. The round ones have just a bit more quirky personality. This car will run and drive, but I wouldn't trust it for any long driving until it has been sorted out again to the buyer's satisfaction. This car needs a lot of things - a few big things and a mess of little things, but it remains a blast to drive. The car rides beautifully on Hancook (I think) low-profile tires on four nice 15-inch alloy wheels (I believe there is a standard 2002 spare tire in the trunk). Everything works: Heater, Wipers, Lights, Blinkers, Horn, Factory Sun Roof, Vent Windows, Pop Out Rear Windows, etc. Condition: This car is rough. it is a project. There are dents, dings and some minor rust. The rear shock towers are fine and clean, and the front floor wells, trunk and quarter panels are solid and rust-free. They are free from rust (but not free from dust - I lived in New Mexico). The Dash is cracked, but useable; the Door Panels and headliner are shabby. There are a few items in the car shown in a few of the photographs which are NOT included with the car - i.e. the planks of wood and the single alloy rim sitting on the passenger's seat. Well, here is my 1976 BMW 2002Tii Two-Door Coupe. I hate parting with this thing! I still have dreams about getting it finished, cleaned up and painted. Rough as it is, I always enjoyed driving it. But the reality is this is a project car for someone with the time and money to make it right. Neither of which are in particular abundance in my corner at the moment.
