Vehicle Detail
1937 Packard Super Eight Touring Sedan Listing this for a friend who is thinning out his collection. PLEASE READ the entire description. I have written a very detailed description that should answer most questions. Car is mostly complete and does run, drive and stop. Owner has not driven this car very much since he has owned it. I have driven it approx. 2-3 miles since it has been at my house. Motor sounds great and transmission shift fine. This is not a national show car ready for judging and it is not being represented as such, nor is it priced as such. It is a complete car that is in great driver condition. Best I can tell this car has never been off the frame. I do not claim to be a Packard expert, nor do I have an interest in becoming one. I do truly appreciate what these cars represent and they are pieces of American history. Packards were not budget automobiles when they were produced. The only documentation with this car is 3 original owner registration cards from 1958,59 and 60 that show it was tiled and owned in Salisbury PA. Owner at that time was a man named G.G. Bowman. Clear TN title will transferred to the winning bidder and it is titled in the owners name. I will list everything I can about the car and if you have any questions or need more pictures feel free to contact me. EXTERIOR- My estimate is that the car was repainted the current color over 25 years ago, at least. Original color appears to have been black. Body looks good and there are no obvious signs of filler coming out. Right front fender does have a small dent and there is a scratch on the right front door. All the exterior chrome is present but shows as being 75 years old. I believe all the chrome is original. Driver side front glass is cracked and the inner layer of the rear glass is cracking. Rear luggage rack still functions as it should and is in great shape. All doors, trunk, hood and cowl vent open and close fine. INTERIOR- Parts of it may be original but not all. Emblem in center of dash is missing. Front seat has some tears as do the lower door panels. Headliner is in great shape. Original steering wheel and dash cluster in good shape and both gloveboxes still open/close and have liners in them. Rubber weather strip appears original and is 75 years old. Rumble style/second row of seats still intact and function fine. Seats a total of 7 people. Rear side windows have privacy shades that pull down. DRIVETRAIN- Flathead 8 Packard motor. Owner was told it was the original but I’ve heard that it is a late 40’s motor. I cannot say for sure. This is the motor that has been in the car for many years and runs fine in it. I did repaint the motor when I cleaned the car. I used the same color that was already on the motor when I repainted it. Owner let the car sit for awhile and the fuel spoiled in it. July 2012 he sent it to a repair shop and they flushed out the entire fuel system, replaced the coil, had the starter rebuilt and installed a new battery. Brakes and clutch work fine. Rubber brake lines were replaced several years ago but still look great. Body and frame are solid best I can tell. Surface rust is present but I have not found any rot. Also the car is not loaded with undercoating and/or black paint so you can actually tell what is there. Doesn’t make for pretty pictures but gives you a true view of what is under the car. Rear leaf springs still have the original plastic wrap on them. Numbers on the motor are as follows- Top of head 389721 288 Side of motor H208756 Also on side near starter 3 21 48 (Date of Manufacture ?) WORKING OPTIONS- Motor and trans. Function fine Fuel, oil pressure and amp gauge work fine Tailights Dash lamp NON WORKING OPTIONS- Clock, speedometer and temp gauge do not work KNOWN ISSUES- Water pump is leaking Left rear vent window and front door vent windows do not roll open. OTHER- My opinion is that this is a great solid car to drive as is or drive it as you work on it. Running, driving car that is not an eyesore by no means. Packards have been out of production since the 50’s and the original cars are drying up. This particular car has not been on the open market in over 20 years. NADA GUIDES values these cars low retail in the mid to high 20k range. The reserve on this car is well below that. Feel free to contact me to inspect the car while the auction is running. Thanks for looking and feel free to ask questions. I spent allot of time with this description but if I missed anything feel free to ask. On Aug-24-12 at 18:20:50 PDT, seller added the following information: Forgot to mention..the exhaust needs some work. Has a leak where the manifold meets the exhaust and the muffler is old. Not a huge deal but worth mentioning so there are no surprises. Thanks for looking!
