Vehicle Detail

Up for sale, is my 1969 Mercury cougar XR7 428 CJ convertible. I purchased this car from the estate of the original owner in California. It has the original big block engine, C6 transmission, A/C (still with R12 system), carburetor and the California smog emissions system. Still painted in its original color (maroon) and dark red interior. Mercury produced 100,085 1969 cougars. Of these, 4,024 were XR7 convertibles (first year for cougar conv.). From these, only 96 had this engine and transmission. The 1969 has the functional ram-air induction (R-code) unlike the 1970s which were Q-codes and no functional ram-air. The engine had a stock rebuild by the original owner and runs incredibily strong. The transmission was refurbished and carburetor rebuilt. Seats, carpet and dash are in excellent condition . I believe the seats have been redone with the correct leather for the front buckets. Car had a repaint which is in average shape with a few rough spots. Body in great shape with no obvious rust areas. Some surface oxidation to some of the undercarriage, but being a California car there are no major rust issues. Gauges all function except the clock. AM/FM works, but weakly. Styled steel wheels with new Goodrich tires. Turn signals function properly. However, the front headlight covers do not. They rise up after turning off the engine. I had a mechanic check all the vacuum lines, vacuum cannister for leaks and replaced the solenoid, to no avail. An extensive restoration included pulling the engine block and sand blasting the engine compartment and block, then repainting everything in the correct colors. Most all new and correct accessories were added. Radiator was recored. Front end suspension was rebuilt. New convertible top with glass back window and new hydraulics. Power top works perfectly. New heater core and the R12 A/C system was rebuilt. Currently, it could use a further recharge. If you are looking for a nice running car with most of the hard work done, you found it. The car is certainly not perfect. The bumpers could use a show quality rechrome, some pitting on the front headlight covers and side mirrors. Both front fenders are replacements, not original. Paint is average at best with a few dings and a bad spot (not rust) on the rear trunk lid. Problem with one rear 1/4 power window which will not rise and the passenger side window not functioning correctly. The exhaust system is stock and in good shape and has a great rumble from this big block beast. This car is registered with the Cougar Club Of America. Email me with any further questions. I will answer best as I can. (supercobrajet428@msn.com)
