Vehicle Detail
Hello, Thank you for visiting my auction for my "Black Scout". This is not a Quick Flip, I've owned Black Scout for just shy of a decade,.. almost 1/4 of my life...that seems strange to say. If your not interested in the history... thats OK , I understand. ....nutz n boltz... Just scroll down to "THE RIG" for the guts of it. I've owned at least 7 or 8 scout II's over the years.. Black Scout was my second. All the others came and went,... but I kept this one for 3 reasons. (#1) Its the most solid scout I ever had. Solid floors, solid quarters, solid rockers, solid body mounts, solid bed, solid frame. I don't like to mess with rusted out vehicles. (#2) Its a true 1977 SSII, NOT a clone. Very Rare, first year of the SS and one of only 785 built. Super Scouts were built to rival the Jeep CJs in the BAJA 500 & BAJA 1000. IHC needed a foothold in that publicity market..They Won & got it! (#3) Its just Cool as it Gets...it's a bad boy... jeeps & hummers are humbled when we meet. This rig is a daily driver, hot rod... its the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Even after 3 years of working out of the country. When I got back,...all it needed was a new battery and fresh fuel... VAROOM..Black Scout fired up and held a steady idle...Cool. It runs like a Hot Damn. Shifts fast n firm. There is a routine...it never fails... Cold Start over 60 degrees.. 4 pumps, full choke...VAROOM ! Cold Start under 60 degrees,.. 6 pumps, full choke....VAROOM! I've always kept Black Scout in my shop, out of the weather. I never drove on salted roads and actually only used 4wd maybe a dozen times. Once to pull a jeep out that got stuck 4 wheeln, 10 or 11 times when it snowed real hard and I needed to get to work. It did it ! I'm not into tearing up what I built. I like reliable ! Over the years I've been thru lots of the components. Can't remember them all..Upgraded stuff here and there. If your lookn for a show rig to trailer around , park on a mirror and count chrome oil pan bolts...This aint it ! But you could show it if you want ,.. its real sharp, everyone does a doubletake and likes it. I'm not into show rigs, seems like a lotta work to impress others but hey if your into it and i makes you smile... rock on ! I consider it a Show Off Rig. I don't chrome frame bolts. My family and friends say I'm a perfectionist.. it's not true ! I'm not THAT anal. This rig drives, what good is a rig to look @ if its not a runner! I wanted a sharp looking, reliable rig ... Black Scout is BOTH ! They say I put too much time, energy & money into Black Scout.. that might be true. The Mrs said,... "why are you working on that thing.. I thought you were gonna sell it??? I said "THING ???,..There are THINGS I wanna do and you wouldn't get it,... you drive a KIA" ... Blam ... in the Dog House... THE RIG ,.. I do a little bit every year, some more than others. OK .. this is a True 1977 SSII Super Scout. The rig is turn key and ready for a roadtrip. I've changed all the fluids from the radiator to the rear axle. fresh filters and seals where needed. Scouts always need a little something,.. like old Harleys Engine is a late model 392 V8 with improved cooling. It came from a wrecked, low mileage school bus and it has a slight cam in it for the work...you can hear and feel it. The bus had 27K on the odometer... I've put maybe 15-20 K on it.. it was clean as it gets inside when I pulled it apart to check it out. Doesn't burn any oil or have any smoke @ start up.. I replaced the valve seals when I did the swap. The Carb is a Holley 2300 series 2 BBL. It will Idle right down to Harley mode when fully warmed and lope along @ 450 RPM. When cooling down, 1/2 inch of choke idles smooth @ 600. All 8 plugs are identical in color, nice ,light tan, the engine has great and even compression on all 8 cylinders. It's overly powerful, more than a Scout really needs but this is America,... Bigger & Badder is BETTER. The engine is pretty much a stock unit for reliability, upgrades include Hooker Headers, Edelbrock intake filter, aluminum flex fan, NGK plugs & Hi volt wires. I'm running the Gold box ignition, there is used spare under the pass. seat storage. Some guys bitch about them but I have no complaints.. once you learn NOT to leave the key in the ON spot w/o the engine running... NO PROBLEM ! Latest work on the 392 has been replacing the REAR main crank seal, whoa.. don't wanna do that again for a while. While I was there I replaced the pump shaft seal in the tranny. Didn't need it but so what ! Also replaced the valley pan gasket, intake manifold gaskets, oil pan gasket, Hooker header gaskets, oil , filter & drain plug seal. I don't like messy leaks.. they are annoying. Cap plugs rotor and wires were replaced, there is clear view, cleanable fuel filter. Heater hoses are new, radiator hoses are good shape and the belts are in great shape. A couple years ago I replaced the starter, alternater, waterpump and fuel pump. Last month I pulled the radiator, took it to the shop, had it boiled clean & pressure tested . Its very clean and straight with good straight fins. New Prestone 5 year coolant is in it. TRANSMISSION This is a 727 Torqueflite. Its a good tranny, damn near bullet proof if you keep it cool. All the drag strip guys used them, they even made adapters so the fords & chevys could bolt them up. . The rebuild was a full tear down & included all new Bronze bushings, heavy duty towing clutches, A TRANSGO competition shift kit & a permenant bronze filter screen. I also added a drain plug & an oil pan magnet to pic up any nasties. The tranny fluid is routed thru a Hayden MAX COOL tranny cooler and a remote firewall mounted FRAM filter. To keep tabs on the tranny ...I installed a pan mounted temp unit leading to a dash mounted tranny oil temp gauge. It runs strong & cool @ 130 degrees F....COOL ! The Tranny shifts Fast & Firm for a Long Life @ proper RPMs. Its mounted on a POLYTECH, polyurethane tranny mount. AXLES ... DANA 44's front and rear. I had the local Dana GURU rebuild both the front & rear axles.. you can't beat a man who knows his job. He put in new inner & outer timken bearings,... said the gears were good & set the shims for proper clearance.. axles are tricky , best left to the guys who do it right,... once. I installed WARN SUPER WINCH manual lock outs, they work smooth. These are 3:73 ratio gears. not too high, not too low... zippy low end but limited on the high end. This rig likes 60 MPH..but will run 70 easy! The Sweet Spot is turning 2600 RPM @ 60 MPH, pulling 16 inches of vacume ! When your there...you know it ! EXHAUST ... The Hooker Headers are older but still doin the job. They have a small repair from years ago but they do not leak and really pump out the exhaust. The exhaust pipes are like new... 2 1/4 " thru glaspaks out the side, they are good for another ten years & they sound great. SUSPENSION The front shocks are Monroe Gas Magnums, The rear shocks are MAX AIR air shocks, individually adjustable. All 4 leaf springs were rebuilt by American Spring , here in KC. New bushings installed, re -arched w/ 3/4 inch lift added, then drilled & pinned. Front axle has 3 degree camber shims added to tone down the bump steer associated w/ 0 degree axles, Only 1980 Scouts had 3 degree camber. Steer Right steering dampener was added, it helps out keeping the rig running straight down the road. It does not pull left or right.. Recent work on front axles included new inner & outerTimken wheel bearings and National seals. ($100) All 8 of the body mount bushings were replaced with polyurethane mounts & grade 8 bolts/washers/nuts. All 4 of the drive shaft U joints have been replaced. Transfer Case is the famous Dana 20... real tuff and easy to work on. I recently replaced the rear cap bearing and replaced the seals and gaskets in it. All four tires are GoodYear Wrangler A/TD, All terrain 31 X 10:50's,.. about 75-85% tread. With a Nickel in the tread it comes up to Jefferson's mouth. All are same tread and even. There are NO weather cracks.. the rig is stored indoors,... always. Spare is a Full size 31 x 10:50, like new with Tits still on it and no weather cracks. Properly mounted with a wedge shim under it. BRAKES are in great shape, 90% on pads & shoes, rotor and drums are clean and true. I replaced both front calipers and rear wheel cylinders a few years ago. All the lights work, signals, running, brakes, headlights,, hi beams, license plate, the dash lights work. License plate holder folds down when tailgate is open. Gas tank is clean and is 19.5 gallons, I replaced the sending unit a while back when I installed it. There is an 1/8 inch steel skid plate under it for protection. The Front bumper is a heavy duty, custom, 3/16 plate steel ram bumper, whatever you hit is gonna give. Rear bumper is a custom air tank I built. 1/4 inch plate I think. It has a schrader valve to fill and air chuck to use. Both are bedlined. It has a class 3 frame hitch with working trailer lights, 2 inch receiver. In the bed for storage is a 20 mm cannon, ammo box, thru bolted with a backing plate. 3 bolts and 2 minutes and it removes, its mounted to stay put and is bedlined. The entire inside of the Black Scout is spray in bedliner by Duplicolor,.. Its a good product that wears well and is easy to keep sharp, it was all recently reshot. Most all of the fasteners are now Stainless Steel, others are grade 8 where needed. 3 point seat belts are mounted to replace the lap belts for safety. The seats are in great shape with no tears, rips or even stains I think. I have black/grey seat covers on them to keep them that way, sometimes I get pretty dirty. The drivers seat is 6 way adjustable electric, the passenger seat is fixed and has a handy storage drawer under it. They are both way more comfy than stock. There's a set of water proof seat covers in the center mounted console box for unexpected rain. The Black Scout has Dual batteries under the hood and a Perko Marine battery selector mounted on the tranny tunnel. All Gauges are functioning, and there are 3 extras I installed, tachometer, vacume & tranny temp. The gas gauge has a flaw in it and only works on the IMPORTANT side, half to empty. Don't know why, I replaced the sending unit ..same thing,.. there is a spare gauge in the storage drawer.. knock yourself out if you wanna swap it. I didn't care to or have the time lately. Sony Explode stereo sounds real good with Sony Explode speakers mounted in the bed sides. CD player has been goofy lately, skips sometimes or reads "error" dont know, maybe needs cleaned. Wipers work, washer works, horn works, glove box is good and latches proper. Manual choke is mounted inline for smooth operation. Dash pad is clean and sharp, no damage & so is the metal dash. I moved the hood stand to the drivers side where it should have been. The Top is in excellent condition it has less than 30 days of weather on it & it was treated from day one with 303 UV protectant. It fits tight as a snare drum and looks great. Its made by Specialty Top of Denver, Colorado. There is a black bikin top by BESTOP included in excellent condition. I added the custom hood scoops and the 60's Scout script cause I really like the look...classy /aggressive. I finally got the body finished off last month... all the small spots of rust were cut out 8 years ago and welded back in with new steel. I don't like filler. Any small dings or dents were first pin welded & pulled then very lightly filled. There were only 6-8 small spots of rust in different areas that didn't go far and were completely cut out back to good metal. solid frame, solid floors, solid quarters, solid rockers, solid body mounts, solid bed, The rear body mounts under the bed step were replaced before I got the rig with 1/8 plate. They did a good job and I didn't even know till I was cleaning up the underside last fall. It's painted HOT ROD BLACK, not flat,... A nice, black gun sheen, no reflection. It looks great. double thumbs up everywhere. Everyone likes it. This is a 35 year OLD SCHOOL hard core 4x4, Its not a new Hummer or Jeep like the real estate ladies drive and it doesn't ride like them. I think its in amazing shape considering.. and I think its one of the best looking Super Scouts around. ..I'm a little biased though,.. all that work & energy. OK, I think thats it...don't know what else I could possibly tell you. What more do you want to know.? Got a question.. feel free to ask. My name is Kevin & my cell # is 816-278-2364, text/ talk only or email me. If you want to see a pic of something not shown I will try to get it for you if I haven't already taken it but like I said... I'm busy as it gets these days till I head out to the coast for work. I've tried to be as honest as possible here so you can get a feel of the rig. I'm sure there is something small I have forgotten but comparatively... I've covered alot. All Antique vehicles require something, somewhere and shouldn't be treated as a new one. HERE'S THE DEAL, If you don't have the funds,... Do Not Bid .... REALLY! If you have less than 10 buys on ebay or have negative feedback for any reason call me first or I will delete the bid. Lots of bad pays these days. This is a binding contract & I don't have the time, energy or effort to do it again. I encourage a physical inspection strongly to avoid any misunderstandings or representations. I recommend that anyone bidding come by and have a look. No rig is perfect,.. if you want that a new Hummer or Mercenary might fit your bill,.. just like all the rest Black Scout is licensed, insured & legal to drive. It is titled in my name with a clear Missouri title. You are welcome to go for a test ride w/me and look it over for as long as you like, within reason. You may also send a buyers inspector over to do it for you. I need just a little notice to show it, I'm busier than a cat in a litter box right now but will make the time. SHIPPING is your responsibility. I will assist you anyway I can with loading to transport if that is your choice. However,... I may possibly deliver the rig for compensation. I wouldn't mind a mega roadtrip again. Anywhere in North America including Canada, Alaska, Mexico and Central America are possible. If you pay for the fuel & a ticket back. I will also ship overseas. I've driven 2 other scouts thru Mexico & deep into Central America twice. I would do it again with Black Scout. Delivery is NOT part of the auction.. it is seperate and treated as such. We can discuss that after. Again,... its not parts of the auction. A $500 non refundable deposit is due within 24 hrs of the END of the auction, full payment is due via certified funds within 7 days. Paypal is NOT used here EXCEPT for the deposit! Sorry but Black Scout does not leave until funds clear. I'm pretty keen on all the scams. I reserve the right to end the auction at anytime if it sells local with a great offer. Thanks for looking and good luck :) PS I'm going to try to add a video link to youtube next day or so... my camera is reading error. I'm going to make a photobucket web page for extra pictures, I'll try to add a link, not sure if they will let me so if not just email me and I will send you the link. try this for more pix http://s1108.photobucket.com/albums/h420/kevman1421/Super%20Solid%2077%20Super%20Scout%20SSII/ On Aug-14-12 at 19:36:52 PDT, seller added the following information: Theres about 70-80 pics on the photobucket,.. if you click "VIEW ALL" first then click "SLIDE SHOW" its alot easier than flippn folders. I just got a shot video made and I'm trying to upload it to the same album.. maybe tomorrow. :)On Aug-14-12 at 21:40:05 PDT, seller added the following information: I headed down to my shop tonite and took some pics of the underside of Black Scout,.. Its an overlooked important place to see. This is where the real work happens, you otta be able to see it. I want you to. It was gettn dark and camera battery was low so I shot what I could fast n furious...No chrome bolts or nuts here.. just heavy metal. Not sure how to post it but I'm gonna try with a link,.. see if it works. If not I can send it to you via email. Most important are the solid floors, body mounts n such, exhaust is there too. Scouts are Old School, that means ya gotta wrench on them from time to time. If it don't leak this week it might next but it's all easy. They're not quiet, clean and smooth like new stuff. With 8 sockets, 6 wrenches, 2 screwdrivers, a big hammer & a decent brain you can pretty much dissassemble 90% of a Scout. I like that,. You don't need $5000 of computer, diagnotic gear to figure whats up.. Hardest part of wrenching on a Scout is the rear main crank seal and tranny pumpshaft seal.. I just replaced them. Everything else is just regular wrenching. Here's the link,.. I hope it works. :) http://s1108.photobucket.com/albums/h420/kevman1421/Super%20Solid%2077%20Super%20Scout%20SSII/Black%20Scouts%20Belly/On Aug-16-12 at 07:20:57 PDT, seller added the following information: Included but I forgot to mention is a large tote that contains all my keeper spares & super scout stuff. I can't remember whats all in there it buts pretty big & full. This is some of it I can think of,.. there is more though. My well used factory manual, 3 inches thick, blower motor, extra wipers, set of chrome locking hood pins I never got around to installing. a new in the box wiper delay, a good clean heater core w/ blower, New Hooker header gaskets, fuel cap, ect.... Also is a big bag with oogles of reciepts from years of wrenching, manuals for different stuff ect. ThnxOn Aug-16-12 at 19:11:42 PDT, seller added the following information: Hello, Sorry for the delay on the video,.. my camera went dead, naturally when I wanted it. So my buddy Chris helped me out and we spent lunch tryn to beat the incoming rain & shot a quick video on his cell phone of Black Scout @ my shop. Sorry for the noise, the wind was up as the front was rolling in, pipes are loud and its a cell phone.I'm not real comfy on TV so I got tongue tied abit. We pushed the rig out so I could fire it up cold outside in the light. No time to warm up, gave it 5 pumps instead of 4 but didn't matter. We took a quick run down old 210 & back. Again, sorry about the quality but hey we're not movie makers. Short n to the point. You can check out Black Scout fired up & running cold then warmed up.Then we raced back cross town to get back to work. Busy, Busy, Busy. Here's the link, its on the photobucket site as well, 1st video, there are 2, both short. http://s1108.photobucket.com/albums/h420/kevman1421/?action=view¤t=VIDEO0024.mp4On Aug-16-12 at 19:26:43 PDT, seller added the following information: Second Video is short too but it wasn't raining yet so it there's a few more things to show. I was fumble fingered on the glove box, it works fine and a little tongue tied to boot. A couple mistakes on verbage, the intake FILTR is Edelbrock, intake is stock & Important side of the gas gauge is empty to half. Duh ! The videos are the first & second pics on the 77 Super Scout album. Thanks for looking. http://s1108.photobucket.com/albums/h420/kevman1421/?action=view¤t=VIDEO0024.mp4#!oZZ2QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs1108.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh420%2Fkevman1421%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DVIDEO0025-1.mp4On Aug-16-12 at 20:07:16 PDT, seller added the following information: OK well that didn't work, try here, http://s1108.photobucket.com/albums/h420/kevman1421/movie%20pics/?action=view¤t=VIDEO0024.mp4 and here http://s1108.photobucket.com/albums/h420/kevman1421/movie%20pics/?action=view¤t=VIDEO0025.mp4 On Aug-20-12 at 17:53:17 PDT, seller added the following information: OK well I had a 2 free hours this morning between jobs. Went to the shop & did a last check on Black Scout for a road trip. Its ready to rock if you wanna roll. Had a couple calls & an email last nite & this am asking if the rig would make it to Phenix, LA and Missula??? wherever that is. Yes, I mean cross country roadtrip is not a problem.Thats not a guarentee, but if I needed to drive there in Black Scout tomorrow I would leave tomorrow. Also got asked what would he would need to take for a roadtrip. I said a wallet & a cell phone. Might bring 8 sockets, 6 wrenches, 2 screwdrivers and a hammer if your a wrencher. In the Cannon Can are all the things to go. There's a gallon of water in the prestone jug,3 top off fluids, motor oil, ATF, gearlube. There's a 4 way tire iron in there (locking lug key is in the glovebox) & factory jack. Other spares in the box include:2 spare belts,2 spare U-joints, 4 spare U -bolts, spare thermostat, spare coil Prolly wont need them but better to have em. I did a quick slide under the rig to check the U-joints n such...all fine. The rig sets just hi enough for me to slide from front to back without a jack.... on a creeper. I set all the tires including the spare @ max air pressure of 50 psi, I usually run 44 psi. Topped of the Rear bumper air tank with 100 psi. I checked all 20 lugnuts. I almost forgot to install the Mega Bed Pad but its in now. It's a 30 lb heavy duty commercial rubber matt with holes in it.It keeps anything from sliding arpound even 5 gallon buckets and the holes let any water that gets in, to dry out. If your gonna fly in, KCI, Kansas City International Airport is about 35 minutes away. Dont sweat a taxi or complications. Just give me your flight info & I'll pick you up @ your terminal in Black Scout. We'll drive back to my shop, sign the title over and your ready to roll. There's a couple decent hotels if you wanna rest up, within 10 minutes of my shop right next to I70 for East-West or I35 for North-South. There's also a Mega Ameristar Casino with everything a man could need including a hotel just up the road. A couple more pics added and a short video showing Black scout in HArley Mode after todays running around. Just go to www.photobucket.com , search kevman1421, then click view users profile....links are funnyto post here. thnx
