Exterior For the E-Class receives its first makeover in eight years, adding sleek and attractive to its list of adjectives. Marginally bigger, the new E looks smaller due to its sportier lines. Built on a new platform, the E-Class sedan displays more flowing lines than its predecessor and sports a four-headlight front end. Extensive use of aluminum in the body panels helps keep the weight down, while the chassis is beefed up for rigidity. Advanced suspension engineering and electronic magic makes this luxury sedan handle like a sports coupe. A new four-link front suspension and a multilink rear suspension are installed. A dual-control version of the Airmatic air suspension, which selects the most desirable shock absorber and spring settings from four comfort and sport modes, is new in the updated E-Class. Interior The interior has been transformed, with more rounded shapes and softer surfaces. The front occupants in the E-Class sedan’s five-passenger interior face a V-shaped console. The feeling of luxury is accented by leather and burl-walnut trim. Switches and gauges are much better organized than the previous E-Class. Dual zone air conditioning and a Premium Sound System are standard. Some other special features are rain-sensing windshield wipers, 10-way power seats with three-position memory, Tele Aid emergency communications and infrared remote locking and ignition key. Under the Hood The E500 is pushing 302 HP and handles like a sports car with a body of a sedan. Safety In addition to the new Sensotronic system, the E-Class sedan has antilock brakes and Mercedes-Benz’s Electronic Stability Program. Adaptive front airbags deploy at a lower force in less severe collisions. Seat belt pretensioners and load limiters are installed. Brake Assist applies full braking force during an abrupt stop. Side-impact airbags for all outboard passengers and side curtain-type airbags that provide head protection are standard. There are eight airbags, front and side.
