Is it a case of fanboys running amok, or does this trick Nismo really throw down? Hop in, buckle up and practice your best fast and furious moves as we go in search of Nissan Performance’s new baby.
What is it?
The Nissan 370Z Nismo is a slightly de-contented, high-performance, V6-powered two-seat sports coupe based on the popular Nissan 370Z.
Just as an aside, the 370Z is known in Japan as the Fairlady Z. For that, we are not sure why.
What’s it up against?
Many other cars exist in the two-door high performance segment. Others worth comparing include Ford’s Mustang, Chevy’s Camaro, and Dodge’s Challenger, as well as the Nismo Hz’s cousin, the Infiniti G37 IPL.
BMW and Hyundai also play on this court, with their 1-Series and Genesis coupes, respectively.
Any breakthroughs?
Probably the most innovative feature of the Nismo Z is in what it doesn’t have. No navigation, nor satellite radio, nor Bluetooth applications exist in this sports car. Instead of some car brands who build their top-of-the-line halo cars by loading them with every piece of technology gewgaw known to man, Nissan starts out with their base 370 Z, and gently builds from there.
The result is a car that handles and outperforms its standard-built sibling for not a lot more money.
As far as breakthroughs go, the synchro rev-matching feature of the six-speed manual transmission and the carbon fiber driveshaft which potentially could have come right from the GTR supercar parts bin, are just a couple of the tweaks and massages that the Nismo Z receives.
How does it look?
In a nutshell, if you like the 370Z, you’ll love the 370Z Nismo. Displaying just the right amount of sass, it has more of everything in the looks department. More nose. More lip. More sideskirts, flares and ass. The by-now-familiar boomerang head- and taillight assemblies are here and look more aggressive than ever. So too the new front splitter, which requires extra care when negotiating parking lots equipped with the dreaded parking stumps.
On the caboose side of the equation, the Nismo gets a custom rear fascia, which incorporates a rear diffuser with clearance for a pair of chrome exhaust tips. Topping off the whole shebang is an audaciously styled spoiler that might just actually do something to create a fair amount of downforce.
And on the inside?
No need for any leather interior here. That’s not what the Nismo Z is about. If being swaddled in full cow is more important to you, then perhaps you should check out the recently-tested Infiniti IPL G Coupe. An array of gauges seemingly appears from every spare piece of real estate in the cabin. Sometimes too many gauges. On the other hand, we were disappointed in several items that were missing that shouldn’t have been. Among those was a Bluetooth system that is mandated by law for cellphone would-be users in some states, including California, where a large number of Nismo Z cars will most definitely be sold, but weirdly came up missing here.
Nissan’s Josh Clifton commented on the issue by saying the company is constantly monitoring legislation around the country and will address them in the near future.
Fabric-covered two-toned seats with Nismo logos are comfortable and well supportive during aggressive moves that this car seems to encourage. A numbered build-plate sits on the rear bulkhead commemorating the Nismo series of vehicles. In the rear luggage area, a shock tower strut brace ties the two together for more firmness while in motion. Not as spacious as the cargo hold of, say, the Nissan Murano, it still offers enough space for a roll aboard suitcase and duffle bag.
But does it go?
It does, to a point. But more on that later. As the most powerful production Z-car ever, it had better be zippy. Now entering its third year, the Nismo Z’s powerplant is a 3.7-liter V6 that puts out to the tune of 350 horsepower at 7,400 rpm, and 276 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 revs. It achieves its power through the use of an H-styled exhaust system and variable valve event lift control (VVEL). The front-midship engine design of the Z platform naturally dictates this as a rear drive machine, the rear differential receiving its power through a six-speed, close-ratio manual transmission with SynchroRev Match. They all connect to a Nismo viscous limited slip differential.
The Nismo Z is suspended by a double wishbone setup in front and a quad-link setup in the rear. Compared to the standard equipped Z-car, it features a 15-percent increase in spring rate up front and a 10-percent increase out back. The roll stiffness is uh, now stiffer, having been increase by 15-percent, while front and rear rates increase by 40 and 140-percent respectively.
Nismo Sport brakes with four-pots in front and a pair on each side in the rear are now on board to bring the 19-inch Rays forged aluminum alloy wheels to a stop after a spirited run.
