Vehicle Detail
I am starting bidding at the $400 "we buy junk cars" scrap metal price for such a large vehicle. I started to rebuild the engine then numerous life events ensued and I just had no time and never will. Many new parts: clutch, cyclinders, rings, push rods, main bearings, CV joints, gauges, etc. I heavily greased the cylinders so they haven't rusted up, flywheel turns nicely. No stupid use of screw drivers to split the case. The only possible stupid thing was not replacing the camshaft. I took it to a machine shop specializing in VWs (where I got some work done that I don't even remember what) RK Motors in Newark, DE, like the "Complete Idiot's Guide" says to do, where the owner (a German!) insisted that the camshaft was fine and the pattern in the lobes was ground that way. However, the "How to Hotrod your VW" book says to always replace the camshaft and has a picture of worn cam lobes that look sort of like mine (the engine was back together before I got the "Hotrod" book. As the engine is out and only half-mantled, it wouldn't be the end of the world to replace the camshaft if you are inclined (and a machinist did say it wasn't necessary and why believe me not him?). Anyway, a vehicle in pieces is obviously sold as-is. I just hate to see all those new, never-used parts go to scrap. It is all pretty well labeled. You'll need to pick up with a flat bed tow truck as tires are not good. I just arbitrarily put 150,000 miles. I have no idea. The odometer was disconnected for awhile and the engine was rebuilt several times, so mileage means nothing so long as you realize it is high. The body is not great but has much less rust than you'd think as it died shortly after I moved from Florida and it never faced salted roads. Vinyl upholster is good. Back seats have fabric covers over good upholstery (last I saw them without the covers).
