Vehicle Detail
1986 Honda Goldwing Interstate GL1200I black. The ONLY reason I would like to sell this great running bike is to purchase a friend's smaller cruiser for city driving. This Goldwing was originally purchased last year when I use to live in "the sticks" and drove 40miles one-way to work. I wanted the biggest comfortable bike I could afford at the time to help save some fuel, since I have a diesel pick-up that don't get such good mileage. I also owned an '84 wing years ago and loved it. Now I'm about 5miles from work since we moved back to the "city" and I really want to get back into a small v-twin. Anyway, when I bought this wing I wanted to be sure it was dependable, since I would be driving it almost 100 miles/day. I know about all the GL1200 issues and have gone through everything on this bike mechanically. The brakes were good with the exception of the rear rotor being too thin, so I replaced that. It had the issue with after being warm, the starter wouldn't perform until it cooled down...so I replaced that with NEW(not rebuilt). The previous owner had replaced the stator already, so I decided to check the issue with the stator connector and saw that it was starting to burn....so I hardwired that properly. The front tire was worn down too far, so I had that replaced. The rear tire still has decent tread depth. I had replaced the timing belts with new. The battery looked old and it was the old acid style, so I replaced that with a maintenance-free non-spillable expensive AGM. Since everybody is so afraid of the stator issues with this model wing, I decided it was a good idea to install this nifty L.E.D. voltmeter so you can see that it generates over 14volts when running(as seen in the pic). Of course I changed the spark plugs with NGK and changed the oil/filter and air filter. Also decided to change out the valve on the carb rack. I had these red L.E.D.'s lying in my toolbox at the time I was working on the wing, so I decided to install them over the engine to give a nice glow. I like to think it helps with being seen on the road at night. It's not too much and they're tucked away so you only see the glow, not the L.E.D. . I also installed new clutches. I have a full repair manual, a set of old turndown tips for the exhaust, an extra rear brake caliper and a motorcycle cover for it. As you can see, it has a hitch, though I've never tried using it. It does not have any real rust or rot. Just some pitting in the hard to reach places of chrome and the exhaust underneath the bike. When the bike is on the centerstand, the rear wheel stays completely off the ground. The previous owner installed a Kenwood tape deck with the optional rear speakers to make it a four-speaker system. Not a "jammin" system by any means, but definetely loud and clear enough to hear at highway speeds. It seems to be pretty dry all around. It had a bad shift shaft seal when I bought it. Almost like the last guy drove it that way for a while because the whole undercarriage was coated with oil/grime(the first thing I replaced for $3.00). Some of the hard to reach spots still have a little grime underneath the bike. The only real problem with this bike is that the exhuast just started to slightly leak underneath. I'm guessing it will need new clamps and gaskets(seen on ebay for a few bucks). If I don't sell it, I would replace the rear tire after this summer. Also seen in the pics are scratches, scuffs and average condition of the original paint. Another thing that isn't really a problem, but cosmetically the plastic dash/fairing is cracked up, broken and/or screwed together. This is a common GL1200 problem, so I just used screws to hold things into place better(as seen in the pics also). So, long story short, I dumped over $1000 into this bike within the last 8 months to make it VERY dependable and eliminate the "known" issues that GL1200's have. In turn, I have not yet started on the cosmetics to make it look better. In my opinion, it looks great from about 10feet away. The paint is glossy and the chrome still shines. As a matter of fact, it looks even better now because I just waxed it before I posted this and the pictures were from this morning. I would not hesitate to drive this down to Florida, but it is a 26yr old bike with almost 77k miles and anything could happen at anytime. With everything I've done to it, that shouldn't be an issue though. As most GL1200's do, it smokes a little on start-up only on the sidestand. If it's left on the centerstand, it never smokes on start. She starts, runs, revs and drives great! This will be sold as-is, where-is. I will not offer shipping, but there are many motorcycle shipping companies out there should you need it. I believe they're on an average of $550. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things. I encourage questions before bidding, and if you're local, come check it out in person. Please understand that selling this bike is not something I HAVE to do, but something I'd LIKE to do in order to get another smaller bike that I already have lined up. I've got too much stuff to have more than one motorcycle right now. Thanks for looking!
