Message from Owner: This car has never given me any problem, and I never felt safer in a vehicle. Bought it brand new in Tampa, Florida and had it shipped to CA. It has had timely maintenance by Authentic Land Rover Dealerships, and I have the passport service record showing it. A few months ago I noticed a small coolant leak and I took it to foreign car automotive shop, since the nearest Land Rover is now 150 miles away from where I live. For $1500, they repaired the thermostat housing, and somehow managed to make it almost impossible to open the hood. Being a woman that knows very little about cars, and never experienced any changes in this car's performance, to be 100% certain,I shipped the car to the nearest Land Rover for a thorough check-up and also to help me open the hood. They concluded that not only did I need a new hood latch and release mechanism for the hood, I needed a new head gasket. And... that even if the car runs fine, if not fixed it will eventually blow the engine. I was told that it is normal and expected for every Freelander after 50,000 to need a new head gasket, and that I was fortunate to have lasted up to 62,000 miles. I got it shipped back home, adding now to my previous bill, another $1000, just to learn this. Well, I have not driven the car since, for fear of making things worse. I do highly recommend you have it transported to your home or mechanic to avoid more damage, if there really is any. It would be a real shame not getting this fixed or figured out, and if you are a mechanic or know of a trustworthy one, you probably have an excellent deal in your hands. I couldn't have babied this car more, and I would hate to see all my dedication go to waste. I just cannot afford to risk being fooled into fixing something that might not be broken. I was offered $4000 by a dealer as a trade-in, but I am not ready to buy a new car at the moment! There is one pea-sized chip in windshield from thrown pebble during driving... barely visible, which was repaired immediately.Quick Summary: Car runs well, but has bad gasket. Apparently there is some mixture of water and oil. Needs a new hood latch and release mechanism. Otherwise in excellent condition. One owner. Never driven off-road, no accidents. Brand new water thermostat housing installed 10/11.
