Vehicle Detail
You are viewing a nice example of the TR4A, which is more scarce than most other TR models as it was only produced from 1965-67. Unusually original, and most probably as rust free as you'll find anywhere, this Southern climate car was discovered stored in an enclosed building for many years, by the former owner from whom I purchased the car about a year ago. I transported it to this restoration shop in Knoxville where it resides now as pictured. The former owner had done extensive work on the car mechancally including the brake hydraulics, clutch hydraulics, starter (high-torque upgrade $300), spin-on filter adapter, roll bar, and more items that will not have to be done by the new owner. This model is one of the last few TR4A's and is the one to get according to the racers (race-proven in the early 60's) as it is the "rigid axle" frame, less prone to mechanical failures unlike the IRS model that was problematic in some cases. This car also comes with a set of genuine TR6 72-spoke wire wheels which are themselves a costly upgrade from the weaker 60-spoke. The Michelin redline tires are old and should be renewed. I looked for many years to find one as solid as this one. As the pics show, there is no evidence of rust on any panels with the minor exception of a small amount of rustout on the back of the hood, which the former owner said was off the car and resting on its rear edge in the ground outside, allowing moisture to that area(see hood pics). Rarely do you see one that has been kept inside and even the floorboards are solid!(see photos) Note the pics of the rear fender tops and the presence of the factory seams on top forward of the trunk lid--amazing! NOT the typical TR4 as most are rusted or filled in this area--this car is super solid!! I have looked at the frame on this car and it appears to be straight and rust-free just like the body. Also pictured is the front valance which I purchased brand new in order to correct the minor damage in the bumper/valance area. Bumper included needs straightened. (I know where an inexpensive complete good one can be obtained if interested). I bought the car for its unusually good overall condition, knowing that it is not running and will not turn over probably due to long storage and sticking rings. But, anyone who knows these hardy little tractor engines can vouch that they are said to be virtually bulletproof, so I figured with some time, effort, and penetrating oil put in the cylinders, it very well could be freed up, but I haven't tried and can't guarantee it. If you're like me, that is a minor consideration when seeking a good example of a car for a restoration as body condition and completeness are more important considerations. I have not taken the time to begin this project, and reluctantly am passing it on to a new owner as I am involved in my E-Type Jaguar restoration and requiring funds. Smart restorers begin with a good car like this one, with a good straight solid body. The balance of the mechanicals are the easy part! You'll have a $20K plus gem when it's done! The fiberglass top is only on the car for weather protection and is designed to fit a TR6, so does not go with car unless you want to buy it at an additional $350 (cost over $1000 new). The convertible top and frame go with the car and appear to be in pretty good shape. I have pictured the assembly separately as it is unbolted from the car. Reserve is set well below what I paid but not revealed. Bid only if serious, but know it's priced right! Ask any questions prior to bidding as all sales are final and the car is sold as is. You should determine if the car meets your needs prior to bidding by either viewing or asking questions. Mileage is exempt as stated on the Mississippi title, so therefore is unknown. The title is clear, and will be conveyed as registered by and signed over by the former owner. I will provide a bill of sale from me to you. If this is not satisfactory do not bid. Any shipping arrangements are the buyer's responsibility at buyer's cost, but I will assist in loading. $1000 deposit due upon auction end within 24 hours. Full payment of the balance is to be within 10 days of auction end. Pickup is to be within 4 weeks of auction close unless other arrangements are made prior to bidding. Good luck and Merry Christmas! On Dec-17-11 at 14:09:59 PST, seller added the following information: Hello...One day left at auction and I felt it important to inform the 111 watchers of this auction who may be concerned about the condition of the box section frame of this TR4A since there are no pics. One of the more serious bidders contacted a knowledgeable restorer in the area to have the Triumph inspected. He traveled to the shop today and jacked up the car and got under it, looked at the middle X-section and all frame rails, tapping all over, and as it turned out, the frame is as I described, "dry and as solid and rust free as you can find". If you are still skeptical, then I will provide you with the inspector's name and contact info...just email me. No rust in the battery box either! His remarks about the unusually good condition just reinforce my remorse in selling--I'll probably not ever find another one for the ridiculously low reserve this one is selling for. Better grab it before I change my mind! It'd go for more in the spring! Merry Christmas!
