Vehicle Detail

This is an original Southern California 280 SE Coupe. The prior owner was a Mercedes mechanic who performed a complete frame-off, engine-out, bare-metal restoration from 2007 to 2010. He spared no expense rebuilding the engine (about 10k miles ago), front end, painting the car the original correct Mercedes gray, installing new interior including carpet and leather, etc. The prior owner and I have invested more than $50,000 restoring this car. Options include power windows, A/C and power sun roof. The car has a vinyl roof, which was probably dealer installed when the car was new (this is not a convertible). The vinyl roof is in good condition and looks very good. I own too many cars so this one must go. Here is a list of the work that has been done on this car, all by professional, Mercedes-certified mechanics, over approximately the past four years: 1. Paint/Body: In 2007 the car was completely dismantled and sanded to bare metal. Doors, drive train, suspension, wiring, glass, etc. were all removed and the car was professionally painted the original and correct 172G gray color. The paint still looks brand new and the body is absolutely straight with no dents, dings, etc. The original matching hub caps were also repainted and are in excellent condition. (chasis no. 111.024) 2. Interior: The entire interior was redone to factory original condition in 2009. New German carpet, new leather seats, new door panels. The gauges were all removed and cleaned and calibrated by an instrument specialist. The woodwork was all redone in 2009 and is immaculate (the wood costs about $3,000 to restore). Leather and carpet were about $5,000. Most of the rubber around the doors and trunk was replaced when the car was painted. New modern seat belts were installed in front and back, although I have the original belts. The headliner was not replaced and is in excellent condition (no tears or rips). The huge factors sun roof works perfect and does not leak. 3. Stereo; Alarm; Key-less Entry: In 2010 a Pioneer AM/FM CD player with MP3 adapter was professionally installed in the glove box, with the amp and woofer mounted in the trunk. It has a remote control. One of the few modern upgrades on the car is this stereo and a remote key-less entry with alarm ($2,000). This is very convenient and in no way detracts from the originalness of the car. 4. Engine: Rebuilt in 2007 (about 10,000 miles ago) with new rods, bearings, rings, head, etc. In the process of rebuilding the engine, almost every nut, bolt, wire and bracket were replaced with original new parts or were repainted, powder coated, cadmium plated or zinc plated. You will not find another coupe with an engine compartment that shows like this. When the engine was installed back into the car, virtually everything was replaced: new shocks, new brakes, new tires, new front end, all new rubber, bushings, clamps, lines, hoses, etc. (eng. no. 130.983.012216). 5. A/C: The car has original Factory A/C. However, in 2010 a modern, new Mercedes A/C compressor was installed, including with custom-fabricated fittings. This greatly improves the A/C system. I have the original A/C compressor, although I don't know if it works. 6. Lights: Although this is a U.S. car, for aesthetic reasons the headlamps and fog lights were replaced with the European lights shown in the pictures. I have the original lights. In the past year, I have had the following replaced, all by a certified Mercedes mechanic at a cost of about $6,000 (I have receipts for the following, but I don't have receipts from the prior owner for the work outlined above): fuel injection pump (original Bosch OEM part, used) two new fuel injectors (the rest were inspected, cleaned and reinstalled) water pump (Mercedes, new) alternator (OEM, new) and battery brake pads cold start valve water pump new horns (two) temperature guage (Mercedes, new) spark plugs, oil, filters The car looks, runs and drives excellent! However, a few known issues the next owner might want to attend to: The bumpers and some of the smaller chrome pieces should to be re-chromed, although as you can see from the pictures it still looks good. The felt around the windows needs to be replaced. The mast for the antenna is missing (I don't listen to the radio so I have not replaced it). Although I replaced both horns, they have been occasionally coming on for no reason so I have disconnected them. You will not find a nicer 280 SE Coupe that has undergone such an extensive, professional restoration!!! It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area. I urge you to come inspect and drive it before bidding.
