Vehicle Detail

**Please click link on bottom for additional photos** You're looking at an all original 1986 Chrysler Fifth Avenue sedan. This car is all about a floaty ride, numb steering, lots of fake chrome and wood, fake fender vents, vinyl roof, opera lamps and VERY comfortable seats. V-8 powered Americana. If you want sporty and agile, this car is not for you. Also please remember, it is 25 years old and won't be perfect! I am the third owner of the car. It was originally purchased new by an elderly man, then a Chrysler fanatic owned it for a short time, but didn't drive it much, then I purchased it in Summer 2008. It has been an excellent car, but I have 2 others and don't have much need for this 3rd one. As far as I know and from looking at the car, it was not garage-kept until I purchased it. So for the last 3 years it has been garage-kept and not driven in rain or snow. Unfortunately service records, the owner's manual and other documentation did not come w/the car, but I took a chance on it anyway. (See clean Autocheck records). In 2008 I had it inspected by a mechanic at a Chrysler/Dodge dealership who gave it a clean bill of health except for obvious items (see below). The "Good": - The engine is all original and runs excellent. It will sometimes take 2 tries to start if the car has been sitting for more than about 24 hours, but always starts and idles perfectly. Hot starts are never a problem. There don't appear to be leaks of any kind and it does not burn oil more than normal. It will be due for an oil change soon (could be done before sale). - The transmission is occasionally harsh when going from "park" to "reverse" but otherwise shifts perfectly. Smooth with no slipping at all. - The interior is in mostly pristine condition. The back seats almost seem to have never been sat in. Everything is very clean and the carpeting is still very plush. There is practically NO sun fade whatsoever. Steering wheel, dashboard and all interior leather are perfect with little wear for 25 years old, no cracking or tears. Power seat functions work perfectly. There are some minor issues though (see below). This car also appears to have been a non-smoker since the ashtray and lighter are clean and there is no odor at all. - Front brakes (rotors and pads) were replaced less than 400 miles ago. - The air conditioning is ICE cold, even on the hottest days. You will never have to put it on maximum. - There doesn't appear to be any accident repair at all and NO record of accidents. The body is in mostly very good condition (see photos and comments below). - The vinyl roof is in excellent condition! There is no fading at all and no rips or tears. All exterior lighting works as it should (except opera lamps - 1 in each rear door, I think bulbs just need replacing). - The paint is all original, including tape pinstripes. Unfortunately the clear coat seems to be gone, but color is good and regular waxing will keep it shining. - There is only 1 spot with rust, near the vinyl roof top. (see photo). Otherwise, very minimal rust anywhere, including the undercarriage. - The power radio antenna still works perfectly. - All glass is intact and perfect, including exterior and interior mirrors. - All 4 wire wheel covers are present and in very good condition. Tires have only average wear and do not need to be replaced immediately. - All gauges and instrument panel lights work perfectly, including the interior chime. However there is a slight "grinding gears" sound coming from somewhere behind/under the dashboard. I am unable to locate it, but it doesn't seem to have affected anything in the last 3 years. It will sometimes disappear. It's probably the speedometer cable or gear on its way out. - Power door locks and power trunk release work perfectly. - In the state of NJ (and possibly others, please check yours) this car is eligible for "historic" license plates and can be exempt from inspection. The "Bad": - Turn signals do not work properly. The right-hand turn signal works, but the tempo is a little slower than it should be. The left-hand turn signal comes on and just stays on. You can manually make the lights blink by tapping the steering wheel stalk. I was quoted at $73.10 to repair. - The hazard flasher switch was broken when I got the car and there is currently no way to operate the hazard flashers. The switch will need to be replaced. I was quoted $240.00 for this repair. - The front power windows raise very slowly. They lower very quickly, but raising takes time and usually a little help. The passenger side is worse than the driver side. The driver side closes by itself, just takes longer. The passenger side usually needs some help. The rear power windows work perfectly up and down. - Rear shocks will eventually need to be replaced. I was quoted $195.60 for this repair. They function well for now. - One of the reverse lights at the back of the car does not work. This is because the bulb burnt out and when I went to change it, the glass portion broke off leaving the metal in the socket. I will try to repair this before the sale, but a new wire w/socket can probably just be spliced on. - Unfortunately the heat does not work. My mechanic seems to think there is a flap or valve that is not opening somewhere around the heater core. Further investigating under the dashboard is required. - There is a rust spot, approximately 1" x 1" at the bottom of where the vinyl roof connects to the body on the driver's side (see photo). It was covered with white touch-up paint that does not match the original paint but seems to make it a lot less noticeable and prevents further rusting. - There is a dent, approximately 12" long, on the lower part of the driver's door. (see photo). - There is a dent below the headlights on the driver's side, apparently just from elderly driving. (see photo). - There are about 7 miscellaneous scratches that have been covered with white touch-up paint that does not match the original paint, but prevents rust and chipping. There are 3 very small ones on the hood, less than 1/2" each. There are also 4 just behind the passenger side rear door. (see photo). - The chrome on the top of the grille is peeling and slightly pitted; same for chrome accents over each pair of headlights. All other exterior chrome is perfect or very good, with no rusting or pitting at all. - There is a piece of accent chrome missing from ahead of the passenger's side front wheel. (see photo). The interior: - The headliner is sagging and must be replaced (a basic D.I.Y. job for relatively little money). It is currently held up with twist-pins and has not sagged much more than when I got the car in 2008. Visibility is NOT impaired in any direction. - The upholstery on the front and center door posts (A and B pillars) should be replaced. - There is a door-pull missing from the door panel of the driver's door. (see photo). Also included is a set of original keys (2) and a set of duplicates; as well as a Haynes repair manual. 69 additional photos here: (copy and paste) http://s5.photobucket.com/5thAve
