Vehicle Detail

1951 DESOTO CUSTOM 4 Door Sedan YOU ARE LOOKING AT 1951 DESOTO CUSTOM 4 Door Sedan. It appears to be ALL ORIGINAL and appears to have the original Straight-Six engine that STARTS and RUNS GREAT. I have given the car a COMPLETE TUNEUP with new spark plugs, belts, all hoses, fluids, and everything checked to be in working order. The car includes the ORIGINAL “OIL BATH” intake and all the associated hardware. The transmission is the TWO-SPEED “FLUID DRIVE” unit and works GREAT with HIGH and LOW GEARS. The clutch works EXCELLENT. I just replaced the Six-Volt battery with a BRAND-NEW 8-Volt one. My mechanic, and others I’ve talked to, say the 8-Volt unit really helps turn the car over and HURTS NOTHING. This car turns over BETTER THAN A NEW ONE AND ALWAYS STARTS WITH MINIMAL FUSS. TRULY AMAZING IN A CAR THIS OLD. THE BRAKES ON THIS CAR ARE ALL NEW. I just spent BIG BUCKS to have the brake shoes re-lined and the wheel cylinders replaced. The pedal pressure is good and the manual brakes stop this car without much effort. The exterior paint condition is VERY GOOD, with some minor flaws. The car was professionally repainted in 2004. I was told by the previous owner the exterior color is correct for this car. As the pictures show, there is some MINOR rust along the right-side bottom door sill and a little rust just below the rear window glass along the driver’s side. ALL this appears to be MINOR AND EASILY REPAIRABLE. I’m in the middle of another restoration and considering the car is almost 60 YEARS OLD I believe these exterior blemishes are MINOR. The STAINLESS STEEL bumpers and trim do have some MINOR blemishes but my body guy said this could all be polished easily. The OVERALL exterior condition is VERY GOOD with ALL the stainless trim still on the car. Ask anyone how important it is to have all the stainless trim ALREADY ON THE CAR as you just can’t find this ORIGINAL stuff anymore! The WHITEWALL TIRES on the car have MINIMAL WEAR and appear to be NEW. Included are the ORIGINAL DESOTO wheel covers in EXCELLENT CONDITION. The underside of the car looks typical of a car this age. The exhaust is in working order and the muffler appears to be NEW. The FLOOR PANS and TRUNK PAN are ALL SOLID with minimal rust. As you can see in the pictures, the interior on this car will need to be replaced. The door panels are OK but the carpet, seat covers, and headliner have seen better days and appear to have come in this car ORIGINALLY. All the door handles, window cranks, and other trim is COMPLETE AND IN GOOD CONDITION. There is some fading of the plastic dash cover and the trim along the tops of the doors, but overall this plastic looks OK. The car includes the ORIGINAL RADIO which I haven’t messed with yet. All the gauges, including fuel, water temp, oil pressure and voltmeter are working. The only instrument not working is the speedometer and my mechanic told me the “speedo head” is frozen inside the dash. He said it is a fairly easy fix but involves removing the dash which is something you could do if you replaced the interior. OVERALL, this car is a REAL SURVIVOR with as many ORIGINAL pieces as any car I have ever seen at this age. IT IS A PIECE OF AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY SHOWING 60,831 MILES. I have some paperwork showing the car has been entered in car shows through the years with some owners’ names, etc. It is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end this auction early.
