Vehicle Detail

1963 Corvair Monza Spyder convertible with 150 hp turbocharged engine and 4-speed manual transmission. The car came from California, and is remarkably free of rust. Floors, underbody, and trunk floor are in very good shape. There are no major dents or dings, and no evidence that it's ever been seriously damaged. The paint on most of the car is good; it's worn in some spots (along the raised edges on the side of the body) from polishing, and there's some weather checking on the front hood. All glass is in good shape. It has a newer top that's in good condition, but some finishing is needed at the front edge of the top. The interior isn't perfect, but very presentable; the seats are in good original condition, with no holes or major cracks. The door panels and carpet have been replaced and are in very good condition. We've had a lot of mechanical work done on this car, and it runs great. This summer we had a mechanic who's a Corvair specialist go through the engine, transmission, and differential. Anything that was not in good condition was replaced, either with new parts or with very good used parts. Here's a partial list of what was done: Pistons, rings, and bearings were replaced, and cylinders refinished. The heads were replaced with good used heads that were completely gone over and repaired as needed. Seals and gaskets were replaced. Thermostats were replaced, all shrouding repaired, and a new perimeter seal installed. Distributor was replaced, and new points, plugs, and wires installed. The turbocharger was checked over, and the return oil line was replaced. The turbo spools up and produces boost as it should. A new clutch was installed, along with a resurfaced flywheel and new throwout bearing. Rear wheel bearings were checked and serviced. Transmission was replaced with a good used unit, which was checked over and repaired as needed. Differential was gone through and bearings and gears replaced/repaired as needed. New rear shocks and a completely new exhaust system with a glass pack muffler were also installed. There are few things yet to be done. The speedometer isn't working, nor are the wipers. The tachometer, turbo pressure gauge, and gas gauge, work, but the head temperature gauge doesn't. There's also an aftermarket oil pressure gauge that's not connected--our mechanic re-installed an original-type sensor so the oil pressure warning light is working. AM radio is there, but is not working. This Corvair is lots of fun to drive. There's nothing quite like the feeling when the turbo kicks in!
