Vehicle Detail
I have owned this car for 22 years and it has been my "keeper" because it has always been a solid survivor, not a resurrected patched together rust bucket. Built in the Los Angeles plant and spent it's life in Calif. and Arizona.I got it as an all original 1955 Commander Hardtop in 1989. Those who know Studebakers will tell you that the 1955 and later cars were much better built than the 53's and 54's. I believe the frames are a heavier gauge steel. It is now built as a nostalgia hot rod, the way a guy might have might have built it in the late 1950's. It is a compilation of Studebaker's best stuff plus some very rare old time speed parts. It has the great looking 1953 hood and bumper with 1954 grille shells, 1955 tail lights. It is lowered with one coil cut in the front and rearched springs in the rear. Stock Studebaker suspension with big 12" disc brakes on the front ( Crysler rotors and GM callipers). Stock power Steering. The rear end is a Dana 44 with "Twin Traction" and 3.31 gears. 17" wheels with one of a kind Moon discs, good tires. The engine is a 1963 Studebaker V8, 289c.i. with the full flow oil filter. I believe it has about 85,000 original miles on it and it does burn some oil. Starts right up and is reliable. It's a relaxed car to drive, not built to be a race car. It has an Avanti "R" series cam and a super rare tri-power, Offenhauser highrise intake with three good Holley 94 carbs (Vintage $peed bases). It has progressive linkage but is set up to run on just the center carb now. Brand new dual exhaust system. The transmission is completely rebuilt. It is an Avanti type "Power Shift" 3 speed automatic with a floor shifter from a Studebaker Hawk. Also rare is the 1955 Studebaker Speedster dash with tach and 160mph Stewart Warner speedometer. All that is hooked up now is the oil pressure, water temp., and amp gauge. Good looking interior with buckets seats from a Studebaker Lark. The body is straight and the paint purple paint is 2 years old. Driver's side rocker panel under door and lower edge of passenger door have rust bubbles showing and the are a few other areas of tiny bubbles under paint. Overall the car looks very nice.
