Vehicle Detail
Selling my Chamonix 2002. Car has been my daily driver and performed very well in that capacity. This car would make an excellent candidate for continued restoration effort or just put into service immediately and enjoyed as a well preserved example of one of BMW's favorites among enthusiast. Car has been California-based most of its life and shows. It appears to have its original white/Chamonix paint, original carpet, headliner and seats. As the pictures convey, paint is very presentable with only a few minor chips, dings and scratches here and there. The body is very straight with no prior evidence of a collision. Paint is not oxidized and holds a nice shine despite the chip and scratch here and there. Rust issues: The floor pans are solid as I have been under the car on several occasions and inspected. Shock towers are also solid with no rust. In the trunk, the spare tire well has very minor surface rust (see pictures) that could be addressed with just some light sanding or a wire brush on your drill and some spray paint. I have supplied a picture of the exterior surface of the tire well also and there is no evidence of compromise from the interior surface rust. Gas tank side of trunk looks unaffected. I am going to remove the rust in the spare tire well this weekend and will provide updated pictures to this auction, of it removed and the spare tire well re-painted Inner fenders and spring perches appear rust-free. The only areas that have light, light surface rust are the lower front valence, below the bumper. The edge of the roof by the drip rail molding. The rear edge of the trunk lid (not seen when it is closed, it is that small an area) A small corner of the inside edge of the hood (about the size of a quarter) The lower, outer corner of each door (also pictured and about the size of a quarter) With the exception of the lower door spots and the small section in the corner of the hood, the other areas mentioned are just very, very light surface, cosmetic in nature due to how thin the paint is. No metal compromise or bubbling paint or pin holes. It is so thin that several passes with fine grade sandpaper would remove it. I have not addressed this yet because it is barely noticeable and I was just going to wait until I had the car painted. The front windshield does have three small chips in it but I have priced several nice used-conditioned windshields at $50-75. The rear windshield is fine. On a 1-10 scale, the car's exterior appearance presents as a solid 7.5 The interior is the strong suit of the car, very clean with perfect front and rear seats, the original carpet still looks very nice and I have yet to have it professionally detailed. The headliner also is very nice, with no sags or rips, just needs some minor cleaning to make perfect. The Dome light works in all available positions (full-on and when door is open) as well as all the electrical items with exception of the horn due to installing an aftermarket steering wheel. Just have not sorted it out yet but is a minor connection-related issue. Heater blower motor works at all speeds. Upon purchasing the car, I drove it over 500 miles home and it did not miss a beat and has been going strong ever since. On the free-way it feels right at home briskly outpacing traffic at 75-80 mph and delivering amazingly confident cornering. The motor is mainly stock with the exception of a Weber 32/36 carb, and MSD ignition box. The cooling system has the Tropical Fan option and has no issues with overheating, even when stuck in gridlock traffic. Transmission is 4 speed and shifts fine with good clutch action. Recently bled the clutch and brake system when installing steel braided lines. Recent and other upgrades to the car are as follows: Flexible steel braided brake lines, front and rear New distributor cap, rotor button, and Bosch plug wires 85 Amp alternator upgrade New Bosch SR-71X starter/solenoid H-4 brighter headlight conversion Hella front foglights, operated by the factory BMW foglight switch in the dash Aftermarket performance swaybars (front and rear) 22 or 23mm, they appear to be Bilstein's, with urethane bushings and end links Aftermarket performance springs Interstate battery, relocated to the trunk for better front/rear weight balance Hi-wattage 6 speaker stereo with removable radio face-plate and MP3/iPod/cell phone input cable- Sounds Great!! Rear speakers covered under audio transparent rear deck cloth for stealth Alarm system It has the factory steel wheels and tires still have good tread life left. The car does not have the 2 front wheel center caps pictured and the present steering wheel is a vintage Nardi leather example. Mileage is unknown as it appears the dash has been replaced by a different unit (non-imitation wood veneer face) . Based on the physical condition of the car and the way it performs, I would say it is under 100,000. The car does not appear to have been restored, but in mildly aged original condition. As it is originally a non-California car, it does not have smog-equipment on it. Exhaust is standard manifold for 1976 not Thermoreactor. Issues that need addressing at some point although don't prevent immediate safe use of the car. There is a minor oil leak that appears to be around the valve cover/head area. It does not require adding oil between changes but does leave drops on the driveway. The undercarriage rubber bushings could use replacing as they appear to be the original items and wear is evident. This should deliver even greater handling/cornering to the new owner. The gas tank has a dent in the corner of it, not noticeable unless you look for it. I am including a perfectly good tank with the sale to correct this. Car runs fine with the current tank in the car. I have included 51 additional pictures of the car at the following link to help convey its condition. These are larger/higher resolution than what is displayed in the auction images (those are included as well) http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2011-5/1366491/2161229 This car has been a great driver that starts with ease (one stab of the accelerator and turn the key), turns, stops well and delivers crisp, surprising acceleration. If the winning bid exceeds $4,000 I will include a complete air conditioning set up, minus the compressor, which I did not keep because the one's used originally had marginal output when new. It is common practice to upgrade to a rotary type Sanden or similar OE unit from a later model BMW instead. Also the two hoses running from the dryer to the firewall, into the car, as these should be replaced as well due to age. I kept a section of this hose so, future installer can see proper hose diameter/gauge. All the other required components are present, including the auxiliary cooling fan. Prefer to sell to non-California buyer due to state-smog issues that effect 1976 models. If buyer from California is interested and wins the car, it is their responsibility to address any issues involved in making the car compliant and securing a smog certificate. Car is stated in earlier auction details as an original 49-state car without the OE installed smog equipment for California cars. Shipping is the responsibility of the winning bidder although I will assist as much as possible in getting the vehicle to the transporter etc. Please e-mail with questions. Thanks for looking and best of luck. On Sep-05-11 at 01:59:30 PDT, seller added the following information: As stated in the auction details, I have completed the surface rust removal from the spare tire well and trunk area. I used a wire wheel and took the effected areas down to bare metal and then primed with rust inhibiting, bare metal primer. I will leave the actual painting of the trunk to the next owner, when they decide to paint the whole car. The rust was very minimal and surface and did not after removal result in thin or pores sections. I have updated the photo gallery with pictures illustrating this work. At this point, I can say the car is easily 90% rust-free. Correction on the alternator spec, it is a 65 Amp upgrade not 85. Also forgot to mention car has new roundel badges front and rear.
