Vehicle Detail
On offer is our 1963 Jaguar XKE (E-Type) 3.8 Series 1 Roadster. Car number: 879027 Engine Number: RA1078-9 (used as VIN on clear Massachusetts title) Body Number: R5707 Color: Originally cream, now 1976 Corvette Silver Trim: Originally red, now black Odometer: 43730 (probably 143730) History and Description We bought it in 1981 and used it regularly in dry weather until 1985 when the rear brakes started to leak fluid. Upon removing the rear suspension we thought that was a good place to start a total mechanical overhaul. 25 years later the rear suspension is now fully restored with all new brakes but we have decided it is best sold while the vehicle is all together again. It’s been in our dry garage all this time. The engine was “running well when parked” and we have regularly put oil in the cylinders and turned it over. It still turns freely on the starter but before trying to start it up again we feel the fuel system should be overhauled and the oil and coolant should be changed. The front brakes will need overhauling and new rotors and wheel cylinder seals are included in the sale as well as the balance of a complete set of Martin Robey brake lines. Those to the rear are installed. The vehicle is quite presentable but the body was subject to some rust repair in the late 1970’s. While it has its original seats, the remainder of the trim is not original. It has a new condition Robbins vinyl top. The sale includes a spare 3.8 litre engine, an extra painted spare wheel and a trunk lid mounted luggage rack not currently fitted. The full details are as follows: Engine Original cylinder head with matching number. Currently has 4.2 litre block with different engine number. Included in the sale is a 3.8 litre engine which we bought just to provide a 3.8 block for a planned engine rebuild. We don’t know what the condition of this spare engine is inside. We think it is from a 3.8 MKII sedan. It has the stock triple SU carburetors. For some reason the generator was mounted to the sub frame. We fitted a new tachometer generator/sender. The radiator looks original and it has the two-bladed fan. We do not know its current condition. Gearbox We are pretty sure this is the original Moss gearbox which, for us, was trouble free. The clutch pedal is very firm and we think the master and/or slave cylinder should be rebuilt. We fitted a new speedometer cable angle drive. Rear suspension assembly Completely disassembled and restored to a high standard. All components bead blasted, etch primed and painted black. Subframe checked for cracks and welded where needed (very minor). The rear cover of the differential was removed and the gears appeared to be in good condition. New oil seal fitted to the differential pinion. One new splined hub, the other side was good. All new bearings in outer hub carriers. All new universal joints (4). New roller bearings in lower suspension members.New brake cylinders and piston assemblies (4). Emergency brake (hand brake) mechanism is the later self adjusting type. All new brake pads. Original springs. Shock absorbers (dampers) not replaced since they were good. New mounting rubbers (4) and shims. Camber shims installed equally on both sides. New brake lines on sub assembly. New brake flexible hose. Brakes See “rear suspension” above for rear brakes. Both master cylinders restored with new seals. Assembled with brake assembly lube. New supply lines to reservoirs. New brake line to rear. New lines included for front. Emergency brake cable was OK and operates holding car on our sloping driveway. New rotors and seal kit included for front brake overhaul. Brake system not filled with fluid or bled. Front suspension We had set the torsion bars for correct ride height. Condition of steering system not recently evaluated but it used to pass annual safety inspection. Front sub frame There doesn’t appear to have been any collision damage. There doesn’t appear to be any rust. Body Main monocoque section This was subject to repair in late 70s by a previous owner.Reinforcing tubes were installed in the main outboard sections (rocker panels). You can see an end in one of the pictures. Some reinforcing gussets were welded in near the rear subframe mounting area which can also be seen in the picture. The rocker panel sheet metal was also repaired. There is no rust coming through in that area. The area where the rear suspension radius arms fit is sound. The driver’s footwell was replaced. The passenger footwell is original. The trunk (boot) floor is sound except for a small hole in front of the spare wheel Fuel Tank and pump The tank has not been inspected and should be checked. The fuel pump should be checked. Hood (Bonnet) This was dip stripped by a previous owner and there is no rust evident. It was reassembled without the chrome strips and the cracks were filled. Obviously not right but looks OK.The inside is painted with black underseal. The helper springs are missing. There is no motif bar in the opening. The chrome surrounds of the headlamp glasses have some dings. The glass is perfectThere is no rust in the headlamp enclosures. We put a small dent in the hood near the right headlamp when something fell on it in the garage. You can see it in the pictures. The latches operate correctly. Top (hood) We installed a new Robbins vinyl top.We painted the frame assembly before installing the top.The latches to the windshield operate correctly. The door windows roll up and down easily and fit quite well. We never used it or parked it outside in the rain, but it would probably let rain in at the top of the windows. The rear window is as clear as when new. Windshield The safety (laminated) glass is excellent except for one slight wiper scratch in front of the driver. The chrome surround is good. Interior SeatsThe seats are the original pointed backrest type.We think the seat upholstery is the original leather cloth, not leather. Each seat stitching has failed where the front thigh support section meets seat area (see pictures).Otherwise the remainder of the seat covers are very sound but have been painted black. You can see red underneath in one area.We have never removed the passenger seat. The driver’s seat has one fixing screw missing on one runner. The seat runners need cleaning up and greasing to operate smoothly. Steering wheel Original slotted alloy spoke wood rim wheel in excellent condition.Has “LL” Les Leston logo.Telescoping adjustment works well. Instrument Panel All instruments are very presentable and were working. There is no way to know if the odometer mileage is correct or whether 100K should be added. The center panel is covered with woodgrain finish which looks original. One toggle switch has been replaced with one of a different pattern. The switch label strip is missing. The radio/speaker console is not fitted. We have one without radio or speakers but it may not be the correct pattern for the year. Carpets and trim The black carpets are not in bad shape but may not be original since they are not tailored to the footwells. The center console has been trimmed in black vinyl. We don’t know if there is original aluminum trim beneath it.The gearshift trim is in good shape. The door panels have been trimmed (not well) with black vinyl. The rear platform is covered in vinyl. The dash top is recovered in black vinyl. Seat Belts The vehicle has never had seat belts fitted! Exhaust We installed new mufflers, intermediate pipes and resonators shortly before taking it off the road. Correct rubber mountings were used. Wheels and Tires Chrome wire wheels, not in the greatest cosmetic state but structurally sound.Spinners not great.Four Dunlop SP2 tires in good shape despite age. They hold air for a long time.Chrome spare with Dunlop RS5 Road Speed tire.An extra painted wheel with Michelin X tire is included. Electrical Everything used to work, but that was 25 years ago.
