Vehicle Detail
No Reserve. Here is a very nice, original, well-optioned, single-owned 1972 Chevrolet Nova SS with a 350 V8 four-barrel carburetor and automatic transmission. This car was purchased new by the original owner for over $3,800 from a local dealership in Southern California. It was built at the Chevrolet factory in Los Angeles in the summer of 1972. The car has its original protect-o-plate with the original owner’s name. Factory options and amenities include air conditioning, tinted glass, front disk brakes, dual exhaust, clock, automatic transmission, radio, sport suspension, power steering, power front disc brakes, and remote mirror. This Nova has the original 350 V8 engine. The car body is solid and appears straight, with only a minor surface rust spot on the lip of the left-rear quarter panel wheel opening and two very small rust spots on each front fender just forward of the passenger doors. The paint has a few minor chips and the clear-coat is faded on the trunk lid and on other localized areas on the car. The bumpers were re-chromed earlier by the original owner and today look very good to excellent. The undercarriage is very nice without rust. The tinted glass looks great. The sunshade bar on the windshield is very good. All moldings look good, with minor dings on the hood lip molding from normal wear. The driver-side remote mirror was replaced with a non-remote mirror years ago. The remote mirror bezel is still intact on the driver’s door. The seat upholstery, door panels, and headliner are excellent. The dash pad appears to be an original replacement and dyed to match the interior color. New floor carpet was installed. The trunk is solid and lined with blue carpet. The matching original spare tire wheel and steel trim ring (not shown) are in good condition, as well as the original factory jack equipment. New trunk lid hinges with trunk hinge shocks are installed. The original radio was replaced with an after-market AM/FM radio and sounds very good. The dash clock does not work. There is lots of maintenance and repair documentation that comes with this car, mostly from the year 2000 and forward. Some documentation dates back to 1990, except for the protect-o-plate, owner’s manuals, and credit card sales receipt from 1972. A review of available documentation indicates that much was done by the owner to properly preserve and maintain the car. Besides evidence of regular oil changes, tune-up maintenance, and transmission service, other documented repairs include: · Timing chain, harmonic balancer, fan clutch, valve cover gaskets, freeze plugs · Rochester Carburator · A/C converted to R134 · Power steering overhaul with new gear box, power steering pump and hoses · Front brake pads and rear brake shoes · Fuel pump · Alternator · White wall radial tires (excellent tread remaining) · Starter · Water pump · Brake master cylinder and power brake booster · Fuel lines/hoses · Rebuilt A/C compressor, new POA valve and fully charged a/c system Annual mileage on this car averages less than 4,000 miles a year. The owner lived in a local retirement community. The car starts immediately, runs strong, and shifts very smoothly on the highway and around town. The engine idle is good and the car accelerates quickly. The engine compression was recently checked and is very good. I've had it parked in my garage and the engine does not leak oil on the ground. The air conditioner works very will with nice cold air. Keep in mind that the car has been well-maintained and the original engine has 149,000 original miles; a tribute to original owner who did his best to take very good care of the car. I do not see evidence of major engine overall work in the documentation other than what was mentioned above. I don't believe anything major is needed now; the car drives so well. The car starts up immediately. I have been driving the car around town and on the highway at 60 to 70 mph with confidence. It's really fun to drive and gets a lot of attention on the road. I believe the car is capable of driving long distances, if need be, with periodic checks as you would probably want to do with any car this age. If you desire to take the car to the next level of ‘show’ beyond a solid number 3 car, you should assume that there might be something you may want to do later on if you want to maintain the originality of the car. The number stamped on the axle (on the front of the axle tube, passenger side) is as follows: J I G118 2 I deciphered the axle codes to mean the following: J I = 3.08 open (this is the standard ratio on 72 Nova's with SS 350 V8 engines with automatic transmission) G = Detroit Gear and Axle (place of manufacture) 118 = Calendar day of manufacture. So, January (31 days) February (29 days) March (31 days) = 91 days. Plus 27 days in April, total of 118 (91+27). So the date of manufacture of the axle is April 27th of the calendar year, 1972. 2 = The axle was made during the night shift on April 27, 1972 Since the car was built during the first week of May 1972, I believe the axle is the original axle/diffential that came with the car when it was manufactured. If you are looking for a nicely maintained original, non-modified Nova SS, please take a close look at this one and don’t forget to ask questions.
