Vehicle Detail

This car is my non-biological child. I'm the second owner since new and would not even consider selling this car unless college tuition wasn't coming up for three of my kids. I'm listing my 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Hardtop Retractable Convertible, and she is an amazing car. No matter where I go I hear stories of, "My dad had one..." or "My uncle had one..." and then comes the far away look in the person's eyes of riding in dad's car five decades ago. The car really stops traffic and turns heads every time. Random people are suddenly your friend and people pass by and blow their horn while giving you two thimbs up! This classic was only built from 1957-1959. Features include a power retractable hardtop and is finished in stunning Torch Red and Colonial White. This car is a daily driver but wins local trophys easily. The engine and transmission are original and have been rebuilt, numbers match. The underside has been undercoated. It has vintage Frigiking A/C that will give your kneecaps frostbite with it's R-12 refrigerant, and will get the rest of the car nice and cool. The heater will melt lead. The interior and exterior body off frame restoration is several years old (finished in 2003 by Jerry's Classic Cars in Springdale, Arkansas) and is very presentable. It has some chip and wear marks, the chrome and bright work is awesome with a beautiful shine and is very presentable. The retractable top works smoothly with separate switches operating all the servo's. This car is not a trailer queen but a wonderful "10 foot driver" that turns heads wherever she goes and is ready for cruising or local car shows. I had a certified appraisal done in May of 2007 by Carl T. Roedel of Automobile Appraisal Service, a member of the International Society of Appraisers. The car's fair market value was considered to be $41,000 at that time. I have well more than that invested in the car. Here's more details, most everything was new or rebuilt Sep 2001 to May 2003: Features: Interior: Tinted Glass Town and Country Seek and Scan AM/FM Radio, works great! Clock, Analog, Lighted, Keeps good time Plastic covered seats just like you used to stick to when you were a kid Orignal pattern red and white interior - seats and door panels, trunk covering boards and microdot headliner (not the fake with holes in it!) Six seat bealts Proper Power Steering Horn Ring - some wear on the paint for the steering wheel and horn ring (I drive the car) Cigarette lighter works (my GPS outlet now!) All buttons and knobs correct "FORD" emblem floor mats Fire Extinguisher COLD Air Conditioning, added underdash by the dealer when the car was first sold (It's been rebuilt but I kept R-12 - much colder than R-134) Luggage Tub in trunk Exterior: Torch Red Body - Colonial White Roof - Ford's Styletone Paint Scheme - The car was originally all white Media blasted and painted by Sonny Past Auto Restoration, Granite City, IL 1958 Hubcaps - Proper, and the wheels are painted black, not body color as they did in 1957 Gunsight fender ornaments Real fake head scoop Trico wipers - converted to electric versus old vacuum - Vacuum powered wipers were awful and worked only when you took your foot off the gas Original style antenna - Not good in carwashes, it will break Fender mounted rearview mirrors Mechanical: Rebuilt 332 V8 engine at 122,000 miles with proper decals and green paint - rebuilt by Don's Performance Engines, Glen Carbon, IL Rebuilt Cruise-O-Matic 3 speed transmission at 122,000 miles - recently had flush and new speedo gears installed, rebuilt by Al's Transmission New front power disc and power rear drum brakes - I have kids and I need a safely stopping car. I have the old parts New four core radiator 4 years ago. I have the old radiator New flexi-fan and water pump last year Added 3/4 inch anti sway bar in the rear and 5/8 inch anti sway bar in the front. The car drives nicely now, not like a boat National Tire and Battery actually has the specs for wheel alignment on their computers. New "Ford Power Punch" gel cell battery, with electronic battery conditioner from Antique Auto Battery Roof extends and retracts well, under a minute either way Condition: I bought the car in September of 1999 not long after my dad passed away. The car was purchased from a Houston car dealership, who had got it in trade on another car from the original owner's son. The car was to be junked and had never been retitled from the original owner. If I had only known.... We had had 3 1958 Fords in our family, and although none were retractables, it just felt right to buy the car. I drove the car for two years making repairs here and there and decided in 2001 to completely restore the car from scratch. Once the car was taken apart, and the body media blasted, I ended up with new floors, new rear quarter panels, new door posts, new rocker panels and frankenfenders. The car's body was repaired, frame was actually in great shape and was blown out, sealed and painted, body painted red, rebuilt engine and tranny installed, new springs, new brake lines, new control arms and suspension, new power steering pump, new power steering rams, stainless steel exhaust, all chrome redone, new interior A/C rebuilt, gas tank flushed and refinished, all new rubber everywhere, new tinted window glass, and I have been driving it since. There are a few areas that will need attention on the paint and body, and everything else works. Both fender caps will need to be refinished at some point, there is a bubble in the paint of the left front fender, and a bubble in the paint over the left rear wheel well. There are few places where I have touched up scuffs with same color spray and polished, and there are some scratches. None of the imperfections can be seen from more than several feet away. The engine compartment was refinished to original and it shows the 22,000 miles I've put on the car. The trunk has had all the decals replaced and looks pretty good. The luggage tug has some paint flaking off. The engine does not burn oil. I suggest before buying the car to have someone inspect it for you or come by and see it. I would be happy to let someone drive it and check it out. My phone number is 314-956-2427 if you have any questions.
