Vehicle Detail

You are bidding on a 1955 Packard 400 two door hardtop, which is one of approximately 7,200 manufactured in 1955. The odometer reads 42,654 miles, but I cannot confirm that to be accurate. The car is kept in a garage in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The car is 99% complete. Any parts missing from the pictures are in the trunk, and the rear bumper is off the car and in storage. I have an extra pair of fender skirts for the car, an extra rocker panel, a parts catalog, and a repair manual which will go with the car when sold. The only part I am aware of that is missing is the chrome/stainless pieces which run from the fender skirts to the front wheel wells on the rocker panels. I purchased the car from Ohio, but I learned, from the previous owner, the car spent most of its life in Kentucky or Tennessee. First, I would say this car is not 100% roadworthy because of problem(s) with the brakes, but it does start and run well. When I got the car, the master cylinder on the car was one from a Cadillac. I had it replaced with the correct master cylinder for the Packard, but it appears one of the brake lines is leaking causing a loss of pressure. The tires will need to be replaced. The engine is fairly solid. It has the 352 cubic inch V-8 in the correct white color. The engine does have a small oil leak, but the oil pressure is very good. I do not know where the leak is coming from. I had the carbureator restored and rebuilt by Daytona Parts Company out of Florida. Along with the redone carb, I had the fuel tank cleaned and resealed, installed a new fuel pump, and installed new in-line fuel filters. It was also tuned up with a new cap, rotor, points, and set of plugs and wires. The power steering pump leaks badly. The cooling system is in good shape and does NOT leak any coolant. The dual exhaust needs to be replaced from the manifolds back. The car has the twin-ultramatic automatic transmission. The transmission has a small leak as well; again, I do not know from where. When I have driven the car, it seemed to shift fine, and I kept the fluid level topped off. The linkage from the column shifter is loose; it takes some play to select a gear. The car has the torsion-level ride suspension. When I have driven the car, it rode well, but the level ride system does not work. The previous owner attempted to fix the problem before I purchased the car, but he had no luck. As seen in the pictures, the car sits a little low in the back. The body of the car is in a blue and white two tone, but the car will need to be repainted. The paint is chipping in some places and cracking in others (see pictures). On the front fenders, just above the headlights, there appears to be some filler (see picture). All of the brightwork is there (except as noted above) but could use refinishing (especially the front bumper). The headlights only work on brights, and the taillights only work when the brake pedal is pressed but no running lights. The window glass is in great shape. The previous owner had the upholstry and doorcards replaced. He told me it was done in leather, but I suspect it may be vinyl. Nevertheless, it looks good. The power windows work. The speedometer glass is broken, but I have a replacement piece of glass. The stock oil pressure gauge does not work, but the car has an aftermarket one below the dash which does work. I believe I have a replacement original oil pressure gauge in the trunk; I'll need to check on that. The radio does work after the tubes have a minute or two to warm up. I got a question concerning if a buyer could drive the Packard home. I definitely would not recommend it; the car will need to be towed away. As the car is, the brakes are not dependable to the point where it would be safe on the roads or in traffic. I would say the car runs and goes well enough for a short drive (the furthest I've driven it at one time is about 20 miles), but, now, I wouldn't risk driving it around the block due to the brakes. Please be prepared to bring a trailer or a tow dolly to get it home. A $250 deposit from the buyer is due within 1 day of the listing’s end. Buyer is fully responsible for pickup of the car; I can hold the car for pickup if it will help the buyer schedule picking up the car. This Packard has been relisted due to a non-paying bidder. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE AN OFFER ON THIS ITEM UNLESS YOU INTEND TO PURCHASE IT. I apologize in advance, but, if no feedback or no paypal, then please contact me before you act on the listing. I tried to be as complete as possible in my description of the car. If you have any questions, would like more pictures, or would like any other information, then please feel free to contact me.
