Vehicle Detail

This carefully restored “53 Jaguar 120M OTS is being put up for sale. I purchased it from the estate of Dave Edwards in Houston in August of 2003. It is an authentically accurate vehicle, however not with matching numbers. Why? Dave previously had another Jag, but this time he wanted a hot rod. His story is attached with the bulletin from when this car won 2nd place in the Houston Jaguar Club Concours in 1990. Dave built his “authentic” hot rod, completed in early 1989, by mating a 4.2 VA motor to an XK 140 transmission. This car flies. I have driven this car less than 2000 miles since I bought it. I just had the carburetors rebuilt by Joe Curto, the well known east coast SU specialist. It runs great. When you buy this car, it will be fully New York State inspected. If you have any questions, call me at 315-246-8099, or email me at hockpg@aol.com. I am Peter Koch. Dave’s Story: Our present involvement with Jaguars began in 1983 when we bought a very unusual roadster that had been kept original in spite of passing through four previous owners. Our children were starting to drive and became interested in cars. I remember the look on our boys’ faces when we accidently ran across a sad example of these cars, tucked away in an old garage and in need of a total rebuild. Those sweeping lines and leaping fenders were like nothing they had ever seen. For a while, it began to look like the old man wasn’t a stick in the mud after all! Later we ran across the original car after and after getting it home, began a long tedious maintenance program and inspection of everything. We learned that car inside and out and over the next five years put on over 20,000 memorable miles. With the learning process behind us, we began looking for a more involved project, like a total restoration. That’s when the roadster pictured surfaced in Hemings. We were living in Iowa and stopped in Chicago, on our way to Hershey, to see the 1953 XK-120M. It was a true basket case, with the body loose and parts from as many as two cars scattered among a truckload of plastic buckets. Overall, however, it was an amateur’s dream—most of the critical items were there and the body was rust free. Absolutely and totally disassembled, but within our reach. The restoration took a bit over 4 years, with all the mechanical work being done ourselves. The only work we farmed out was paint and the leather seats. We also started the engine work with a long block assembly which we later had to redo ourselves to get it right. The car reached a driveable state about 2 ½ years ago and now has over 6000 miles on. Following our rebuild of the “rebuilt” engine, it has been very reliable and is exercised often. This car is a total rebuild, we tried to work to a high standard, using the other original car as a guide to the endless questions about authenticity. We worked mostly with correct original parts, plus a few quality reproductions. We sold the first car toward the end of the restoration of the car pictured, but by that time we just about had it committed to memory, anyway. The car won a 2nd place award in a Houston Jaguar Club Concours last year and is occasionally shown in the local area. On most weekends, however, it is simply “out and about”. Dave Edwards 1991 You buy this Jag with all Dave’s Manuals and notes, all his pictures, and all his “stuff”. You can see his research. You can see his authenticity when you read how to properly solder the vertical pieces into the grill or reading of how the padding in the leather seats had to be perfect; the correct thickness. This car is of “driver”, not show quality, although it has always been garaged, but what a machine. 1953 Jaguar 120M OTS Chassis # 670817 Body F7351 Engine VA1210-9 Former engineNC5716-9 Gearbox JL13631 Key F5906 *There are plenty more photos with more detail, please e-mail me at the e-mail address above if you would like to see more photos!
