Vehicle Detail

This is my 1979 Mercedes 240D. I really hate to sell this car, but am forced to by financial problems, so this is a NO RESERVE auction. The car has a 4 cylinder naturally aspirated Diesel engine and a 4 speed automatic transmission. It has 164,000 miles on it, and no reason to believe that is not accurate. It runs and drives great, delivers 35mpg highway. However there are some issues. The main problem right now is that the brake pads are almost gone. It isn't terribly expensive or difficult to fix, but have no money to spend on it. The glow plug relay also went kaput about a month ago. I have wired in a "manual" relay (connect two bits of wire together) so it can be started. A new upgaded fast glow bosch relay kit with afterglow is available on ebay with the realy, wires, glowplugs and the strip fuse for $120. It could also use a new set of shock absorbers. The vacuum system does have some leaks. The door locks are inoperable, but the engine does still shut off with the key. I took a vacuum reading at the pump, and it was good. There are a couple of rubber vac hoses that are cracked that would probably fix the problem if replaced. The trans doesn't shift hard, but the shift points are a bit early. Not to bad, and you can always shift it manually. It burns or leaks a little oil. I usually put less than 1/4 of a quart in when I fuel up. Other than those issues, it doesn't really have any mechanical problems. Oil is changed every 3000 miles or sooner, always with mobil delvac, and fleece (not paper) german filters. Recent work done include new cv axles and differential fluid change. Replaced all fuel filters (including the in tank screen), and fuel hoses were changed to the biodiesel friendly synthetic rubber lines instead of the natural rubber that it eats through. I usually run a B20 bio/petro diesel blend. Alternator and batter changed last summer, along with all the belts. Tires all have good tread, and 2 full size spares are included. Also comes with an extra yellow hubcap. The body is in good shape for it's age. I brought it to Michigan 3 years ago, and before that it was in South Carolina. The first 2 years I owned it, I kept it in a garage for the winters, but this last winter it was my daily driver. There is no block heater on the car, but it never refused to start. Even in sub zero temperatures. There is however some surface rust, as shown in the pictures. Nothing bigger than a quarter, and nothing going all the way through. There is also damage by the hood from when it flipped up. The hood was replaced with one of the same color. The interior shows some wear, but there are no rips in the seats. The headliner in not sagging. There are a few cracks on the dashboard, but I've seen worse. The carpet is now original to the car, and wasn't proffesionally installed, but it isn't horrible. There is an aftermarket ipod stereo installed with remote. It doesn't have a cd player, but ther is a 1/4 in. input, as well as USB port, and Mico and Mini SD slots to play mp3's with and you can put the ipod inside (where you would normally put a cd), and control it with the head unit, while the ipod stays charged. The speakers were all replaced last summer. It's not a Thumpin system, but it sounds good. This car can be used as a daily driver as is (with new brake pads), or could be fully restored quite easily. It is located in Grand Rapids, MI, but I am willing to deliver it. I wil drive it anywhere within 150 miles, if you pay for gas there and back. any further and I would want to be compensated for my time. In person inspection is welcome and encouraged, as are any questions. $100 deposit due within 24 hours of auction end, the rest cash or money order in person within 7 days Vehicle is for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end auction early
