Vehicle Detail
Thank you for looking at my 1967 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III. The car has had only two owners since 1971 (myself, and the owner before me). The previous owner purchased the car when he was a midshipman at the Naval Academy. He drove the car everywhere including across the country a couple of time due to naval assignments. The car was shipped to Hawaii and England when the gentleman was stationed in those locations. There are also records of when the car was stored on occasions when he was at sea. Notations of these events are included in the detailed service records for the car. Those hand written records are an important part of the car's history. No rust today due to being garaged when not in use. Top in excellent condition. Everything is in working order. Rebuild/Restoration/Maintenance Information June 1981 in England, engine rebuilt at 88,450 miles. New pistons, valves, keeepers’ cam & main bearings, bored out 1/10,000 inch and new rings installed; new gaskets, head bolts, timing chain, oil pump, valve springs; cam and manifold shafts turned down 1/10,000 inch, oversized bearings installed. In September 1982, at 92,088 miles, the owner was not satisfied with engine overhaul that was done in England so he had it redone by a shop in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Overhaul included new rings, oil seals, polished valves, new half bearings, gaskets, etc. Owner very satisfied with results. These notes are taken from the written detailed 15-year record of the car’s maintenance kept by the owner at the time. In 2005, Vintage Restorations LTD,(www.vintagerestorationsltd.com) did their 150-point evaluation on the car and their restoration recommendations at the time were completed at a cost of approximately $7,000. One can go to their website and see what is included in their 150-point assessment of a car. Electronic ignition installed in 2009. British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate. Chassis # H-BJ8-L/38074 off assembly line 16-26 September 1966. New tires warranted due to age; not wear. Also, the wire wheels should be tuned. Information specific to this car's rear turn signals. The rear shroud turn signal lights on the 1967 BJ8 are typically the same size as the brake light below and the two front lights, but on this car, they are smaller (see pictures); they still function as turn signals and the amber lenses were installed by Vintage Restorations in 2005 replacing similar lenses with deteriorating rubber surround. The original lenses were red and flat, unlike anything I have been able to find at Moss Motors or other parts suppliers in the U.S. The red brake light lenses on this car are exactly like the white and amber lenses on the front of the car. The Anderson&Moment Authentic Restoration Guide states that the rear lights on these cars during this period varied greatly depending upon the regulations on the various countries where the cars were to be shipped. It is suspected the car may have been manufactured for the European market. The Anderson&Moment Authentic Restoration Guide also states the Model Number for these cars was as follows: H for Healey, B indicating engine size, J for convertible, 8 for the big Healey, and U for cars destined for the U.S. Otherwise, the U was an L. Please note the number on this car is HBJ8L038074. Vehicle is located in Hilton Head, SC. If you have any questions or would like to see the car, please email me and I will get in touch (by email or phone if you would like to leave a number). Thanks again for looking at the auction.
