Vehicle Detail

Unique 1949 GMC 150 (3/4 ton) long bed pickup truck with a PTO (Power Take Off) dump bed. 5 Window, 4 speed, 228 inline 6 This truck is a frame off restoration and has a solid body. It has been restored to its original condition with some upgrades noted below. In 1998 it was for sale and displayed in front of a salvage yard in town. I stopped because I like the less common GMC and looked the truck over. It had 49 years of use and was rough. I was going to pass it by, until I found out that it was a dump truck. I gladly paid $475 for it and drove it home. PTO dump bed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Erhhj3t95rs Driving on the road: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UZSK3z6XYw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3KGX8lPGMQ Since then here is the work I have put into it. The truck was disassembled. The body was sandblasted, primed with DuPont self etching primer, and painted with DuPont Centari 44455A metallic lt maroon. A final coat of paint was put on after the truck was assembled to ensure a uniform color. The electrical system has been replaced and upgraded to a 12 volt system containing an alternator, ignition resistor and a newer model starter. The old starter petal and equipment is still in place. I left it there because I like the original look. I still have the foot start starter if you are interested. A blinker switch with flasher and hazard was installed on the column. The front two park lights have been upgraded to a double contact so they double as a turn signal light and a park light. The lights on the back of the truck are stop/turn/park lights. The horn is a new model 12 volt, 112 decibel horn. The brake system has been flushed and the wheel cylinders and master cylinder have been rebuilt. The hard to find chrome emblems have been re-chromed. Other heavy chrome pieces were bought new and the trim molding polished. The grill is original. The instrument panels have been rebuilt. The dash knobs, levers and vent knobs have been replaced. The frame was wire brushed and sandblasted. It was then coated with Por-15 and sprayed with a gloss black enamel. The hydraulic pump has been rebuilt and the hose replaced. The ram cleaned and the entire system repainted to its original color. Cemco Hydraul-Lift Industries in Galion Ohio is the maker of the pump and lift. I have not been able to dig up any information on it. New muffler and exhaust pipe. New interior (seats, head liner, sun visor and door cover panels all reupholstered in the same fabric). No carpet, I used mats. New windows, weatherstripping, grommets, pads, felt, fender lining, rubber seals, felt seals, screws, bolts, nuts, and washers. The fuel lines have been replaced and the gas tank has been cleaned and lined with Line A Tank sealer. New gas tank sender unite. The fuel pump is a single action pump. The flat bed is 8' long by 6' wide. The 2"x 6" weather treated pine was stained with Minwax light brown oak and sealed with Thompson's Water Seal. When I bought the truck it had the original GMC long bed. I took it off because it had more than its share of use through the years. I had always wanted to put an original bed back on with fender skirts welded to the fender and smoothed over because it would look amazing and even more unique. When I shared my idea with others, they all said, "what about changing the tires?" I replied with, "if I need to change a tire, I will lift the dump bed". The motor is a GMC 228 inline 6 cylinder. It runs and starts well (you can hear and see both in the videos above). The valves have been gaped and timing checked. New water pump, hoses, spark plugs and gaskets (head, valve, exhaust, oil pan, water pump and gas pump). The motor and radiator have been flushed, cleaned, and painted (oil pan not painted). When I bought the truck it had a '72 Jeep carburetor and it has been replaced with a '49 Carter YF, rebuilt by C.F.I.S. Original vacuum windshield wiper motor. This truck has its original Hypoid H-050 differential with 4:57:1 gear ratio and knee action shock absorbers. It has the optional 4 speed transmission of its day with a 450A Chelsea Products PTO. I contacted Chelsea Products to determine the year of the PTO. The representative told me it was from the 1960s. The transmission has been flushed. The truck now has 16" 1979 Ford rims with 215/85R16 tires. When I bought the truck it had split rims. I still have them if you are interested. There is no heater on this truck. I believe this truck is what they call a "factory delete" (where the truck is originally sold without a heater). I did pull an aftermarket heater box out of this truck. Note: The inside drivers side door near the lower hinge contains a hole in the sheet metal (shown in picture below). This truck is very clean, is kept under a car port and has never been smoked in. It is in great running, driving and working condition. It is a great truck to show off and even better for wowing people with the dump bed. I do not know the actual miles on this truck. I drove it occasionally for a year before restoring it. I have put about 50 miles on it after its restoration. Truck inspection before bidding is encouraged. Bidding without inspection is acceptance of the truck as is. Feel free to email me with questions. I can also provide additional pictures if you would like.On May-31-11 at 16:21:59 PDT, seller added the following information: I received a question concerning the mode of engine oiling and if I knew the year of the engine. The motor is a GMC 228 with full-pressured oiling. No "Babbit Pounders". The casting number on the engine block is 6107326 GMC 6 K305. As far as the year, wiki states "GMC replaced the Pontiac 223 with their own 228-cubic-inch (3.7 L) 228 in 1939. This overhead-valve engine was produced through 1953." The website oldgmctrucks.com states 228 engines with a 6107326 casting number were made between the years '39-'52. According to Patrick's Antique Cars and Trucks, the K305 is a date that translates into Nov. 30 1955. I could not find a number on the head. The exhaust number is 6107378, intake number is 6107377AC and number stamped by distributor is 228 N348381CAL. I am not sure what the year is. Any help identifying the year would be nice.
