Vehicle Detail
This started its history as a ground-up restoration six years ago; as such I chose not to keep it orange and went with the classic paint scheme from earlier in the decade with white and turquoise. Featured in a few photo shoots. Pan was painted inside/out with POR-15 where accessible. ALL rubber was replaced except the pan-body seal. Windshield was replaced, all other glass was good. ALL moving parts were lubed/refurbished/replaced as needed: bearings, CVs, brakes, etc. Even the the wiper motor was cleaned/relubed. Interior redone in an "oatmeal" scheme that compliments the white/turquoise. Seat frames cleaned/sanded/painted with POR-15 and re-upholstered. New dashboard pad, functioning and period-appropriate VDO oil pressure gauge, German fuel gauge ("Vol"), and original clock; functioning Sapphire XX radio. A modern stereo is stealth-installed with modern Blaupunkt speakers. Now the juicier part--current engine is a Porsche 914-spec 1700 (domed pistons) with a Raby DTM cooling system. This is almost twice the HP the car was supplied with and makes driving fun... (This engine was not built by Jake, other than the cooling shroud, pulley, alt. stand and some components) Dual IDF 40 clones. Transmission rebuilt with "freeway flier" 4th gear. I have not gone over 90.... Wheels are Rivieras, with Conti-tourings, with a fifth tire that has not been mounted yet. Also installed is air conditioning: the interior unit is the original dealer-installed unit. I have fitted a more modern GM-type compressor and dual undercar condensers. This works and produces cold air when charged, but is not currently fully hooked up, as I was chasing leaks and adding a cooling fan when last summer was over. Everything else works, though... This car was my main daily driver for most of the last six years, sharing the duty with the Vanagons and now a Subaru, and there are too many cars now, and I would rather have someone drive it than have it become a garage queen. It has had front fender damage, professionally repaired; and has a couple of rust bubbles on the right rocker.
