Vehicle Detail

Relisted because the high bidder disappeared before paying... Great project bus! Solid body with the great enormous sunroof, updated seats (all three rows) from a '89 model, re-built stock transmission, AND IT RUNS and is tagged and inspected and LEGAL TO DRIVE! This engine is a "refreshed" rabbit 1.6 engine with a REBUILT HEAD that could use new pistons and rings--we changed the seals and bearings last summer. The pump does not leak, and all electrics work. It does drip oil. The head is completely rebuilt to spec in an excellent shop--it should need no attention soon. When I bought it three years ago it had been sitting several years and neighborhood hoodlums had broken ALL the glass--that has been replaced, but I could only find the newer, shorter sliding door window and fabbed a seal to finish that. Does not leak in normal usage. I also had the transmission rebuilt (the classic frozen slider) at the Bug Stop in Arlington. Kelly does good work. Seats were trashed, of course, so replaced as above. New alternator. New tires. Body has no significant dings! Some surface rust on the sunroof, I have matched paint and will try to get to that before selling. It swallowed a valve last year, so the engine was replaced with the current Rabbit 1.6 block to keep it on the road, new water pump, seals and bearings last summer, and a rebuild head as above with no more than a couple hundred miles on it...If I were to keep it I would upgrade--I also have a Westy converted to a 1.6td, worth the effort (it will never be for sale). Much more than $3000 in parts and platform for other conversions, but I'd rather keep it together and have it get driven. I'll throw in a Bentley and spare head, and probably some other parts... It does have bumpers, too. Q: What would it take to convert to TDI ? Thanks Gary 417-827-9707 A: Essentially a TDI engine, controller, and whatever intake, exhaust and mounting hardware you need. There are resources available on thesamba.com, yahoo groups and other places online, but I have never done that conversion. Apr 02, 2011 Q: Hi Can you tell the mpg, ballpark figure? Thanks John A: 25-30mpg, as with many diesels its better around town. Apr 01, 2011 Q: Will this car make a cross country trip? Is it possible to see this car before the bid ends? A: It is in Fort Worth--are you local? Please see previous responses about distances: no specific problems except age, but no guarantees. Mar 30, 2011 Q: hi does this van have air conditioning and if yes does it work. also if I were to drive it slow - do you think I could make it to california. last is the roof rack included? A: It did not ever have air conditioning, but does have the enormous sunroof. The rack (Yakima 1A with extenders, and pipe) is included. I cannot guarantee that it will make it anywhere, this is a thirty-year-old bus, but I... Continue reading Mar 28, 2011 Q: would u drive it from texas to pa? A: No, I do not offer delivery. As with any vintage vehicle, I could not guarantee it to make such a journey, though I have no specific reason that you could not, with patience and personal knowledge of the ways of Vanagons.
