The styling is by Zagato of Milan, where it was also assembled. The engines were a 2.0 litre V-6 for the home market and a 2.5 litre unit for exportation, as found on the Biturbo. The folding roof had Alcantara headlining. The interior was all leather interior, and the iconic golden Maserati watch was featured on the dashboard. Among the 3,793 buyers of all the Spyder versions were four-time F1 champion Alain Prost, Sir Elton John, and Mrs. Ursula Piech whose husband headed Audi at the time. The engine was derived and heavily modified from the 2.0-liter Maserati Merak engine used in the Italian home market. It was an aluminum 90-degree V6 with cast-iron wet cylinder liners, three valves per cylinder, with one exhaust valve and two intake vales of dissimilar sizes. The engine bore was fat (91.6mm) with a relatively short stroke of 63mm. Two IHI turbochargers sat underneath the cylinder banks and blew air through a single 2-barrel Weber carburetor housed atop the engine in a plenum chamber. Peak torque of 208 lb-ft was available at a low 3000 RPM, and combined with a weight of around 2700lbs, helped propel the car from 0-60mph in about 7 seconds. In 1985, the Biturbo was offered in the USA with the options of power steering and an automatic transmission. The Sensitork differential began to appear during this model year, a limited slip differential which replaced the earlier Salisbury unit. For the 1986 model year, the 2-door coupe was temporarily dropped from the lineup and two new models arrived: the Biturbo Spyder, a convertible, and the four-door Biturbo 425. All cars were equipped with automatic transmission and power steering, and water-cooled IHI turbochargers replaced the previous oil-cooled units, which tended to improve the reliability of the turbochargers. A slightly smaller Weber carburetor was fitted. The Spyder had a shorter wheelbase than the earlier coupe and seats for only 2 people, but the mechanicals were much the same. Sales of the Bi-Turbo were strong for the marque, selling about 40,000 examples world-wide. A few examples were entered in the British Touring Car Championship though they had little success. Maserati, now in the hands of Fiat, had changed owners several times already before falling under the guidance of Alejandro De Tomaso in 1975. De Tomaso, an entrepreneur and owner of the exotic Italian car company bearing his name, knew a great deal about the car business when he acquired Maserati from its previous owner, Citroen. Ask any European or knowledgeable Maserati enthusiast, you will hear that Biturbo saved Maserati. In Europe, during Maserati's dormant decade in the U.S., the Biturbo flourished. It continued to sell, and it continued to evolve into more and more potent forms. Exotic bodies were added to a competent chassis, and cars like the turbo-V8 Shamal were based off of the already proven platform. Fiat's 1993 takeover pushed for greater and greater development of the Biturbo cars. Eventually, the company had regained enough steam to start anew once again. The 3200GT that followed the last of the Biturbo generation's cars was a radical departure whose arrival put Maserati on a path towards profit and towards an eventual return to the long gone U.S. market. The Biturbo is faced with low values today, which makes it very attainable for a car with such exotic engineering and with such a famous nameplate. The Spyders are still worth a lot thanks to desirable bodies built by the illustrious Italian design house Zagato, but the Coupes can be picked up for unthinkably low prices. No matter where you stand on the controversial styling, all of these machines come with Italian sophistication and one of the finest interiors to be fitted to an automobile for their time. Quirks aside, Biturbo owners should be proud. After all, they get to drive the car that saved one of the finest and most respected marques to ever come out of Italy. The only thing to make this car PERFECT I would say is I would have the leather instrumentation cluster housing be re-upholstered (as it has a few cracks @ the top seems & slight peeling at the bottom section). If one were to go absolutely crazy on this car, you would replace the windsheild as the lower corners on both sides of the windsheild have a seperation fog.
