Vehicle Detail
This auction is for a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 with a 5-speed manual transmission and black and dark gray interior. I have owned the car for about one year and while it still has a few imperfections which I will detail below, this car received a complete inspection by Dave at the DMC Midwest shop last year and has received extensive service at this shop to address the operational, safety, and maintenance items necessary to bring this car back to be a reliable daily driver. In addition, I purchased the parts for the remaining cosmetic/non-essential items and have completed a fair amount of the cosmetic work. I have put close to a thousand miles on the car since the service received at the DMC shop, including a 200+ mile trip. I have had to do nothing more than a few minor adjustments and maintenance tasks. This car is ready for enjoyment right away without having to address expensive repairs as is sometimes a possibility with other ebay automobile listings, especially those that are less detailed. I am willing to provide complete documentation of the service work to interested parties upon request so you have the confidence that all recent maintenance, safety, and operational repairs were professionally done. The following is a summary of maintenance and repairs that were addressed within the last year at the DMC Midwest shop: Engine and Fuel System ($1628 parts + $1528 labor) Fuel distributor - $495 + $220 labor Injector nozzles - $180 + $286 labor Warm up regulator - $165 + $143 labor Idle speed regulator motor - $295 + $55 labor ECU (idle speed computer) - $275 Spark plugs - $33 + $220 labor Fuel accumulator kit - $114 + $165 labor LAMBDA sensor (aka O2 sensor) $22 + $55 labor Fuel pump replaced and fuel tank clean out - $49 + $374 labor Brakes ($931 parts + $1133 labor) Master cylinder - $125 + $121 labor Overhaul all calipers, replace bad pistons - $427 + $792 labor Brake discs and pads - $379 + $220 labor Cooling system ($1280 parts + $1925 labor) Complete coolant hose kit including radiator, cooling system bleed & fan thermo switch and seal - $519 + $1507 labor Water Y-pipe, water return pipe - $120 + $220 labor Stainless steel coolant reservoir, cap, and coolant – $173 + $33 labor Water pump kit, thermostat - $244 + $55 labor 140 amp alternator, bracket - $224 + $110 labor Maintenance / Other ($678 parts + $836 labor) Remaining 30,000 miles service (Oil change and filter, alternator belt, air filter, distributor cap and rotor, a/c drive belt, gear oil, etc) $129 + $220 labor Flush and bleed clutch system - $8 + $55 labor Tail light circuit board - $125 + $55 labor Tie rod end boot - $10 + $88 labor Steering column bushing - $16 + $55 labor Cabin fan assembly - $104 + $110 labor A/C charge and leak test, compressor o-rings - $166 + $231 labor New battery - $120 + $22 labor Miscellaneous (~$1700 parts and labor) Complete vehicle inspection, brake hose, fuses, oil pressure switch, license plate light, clean light wiring, torsion bar adjustments, door struts, crossgate cable adjustment, pulley bearing job, 25 amp circuit breaker, shop supplies, miscellaneous diagnostic time The following is a list of parts that have been installed last year by myself or local shop ($2129) Cooper Cobra tires – sizes match original stock - $400 Headliner set - $450 Leather seat covers - $600 Power window switches - $70 Multivex mirrors - $90 Rear view mirror, interior - $45 CD/DVD/GPS stereo head unit with extended warranty good through mid 2012 - $210 Rock screen (black) - $60 Shift boot/metal bracket - $89 Sunvisors - $125 The following is a list of parts that were purchased but not yet installed and will be included with the auction: ($1523) Wiper Blade kit - $10 Windshield washer pump - $20 Luggage compartment struts - $40 Luggage compartment hood seal - $59 Trip reset assembly - $25 Window motors - $520 Weatherstripping kit (inner door seals have been installed) - $264 Wings-A-Loft Door Lock Upgrade Combo. System - $295 Wings-A-Loft Deluxe Remote Door Opening System - $250 Wings-A-Loft Remote Trunk Release System - $40 With over $13000 of parts and professional labor put into this vehicle recently, plus countless hours of my own time, this DeLorean should be quite reliable and require very little more than standard maintenance for someone looking for a daily driver that can be enjoyed without additional investment. That being said, there are a few imperfections that I will list here so that potential buyers can be aware of the exact condition of this vehicle to the best of my knowledge. This information can be verified with the DMC Midwest shop, if desired. There are some very minor dents, dings, and scratches to the stainless steel body. Most of these are not noticeable without close examination. There is a small crack in the dash near the glove box. The fascias are painted an incorrect color. There is a small crack at the left corner front near headlight. A bit of the paint is bubbling on rear fascia. The spare tire is present but the car jack is missing. The spare has not been tested. The frame is in good condition overall but there are few areas that should be touched up to prevent rusting. This can be done by removing loose epoxy and repainting with POR-15 followed by Krylon Smoke Gray paint. The power window switches are not currently hooked up. I disconnected them since the power window motors need replaced, which are also included with this auction. It is not difficult to reconnect the switches to their harnesses within the console. Power locks are currently disabled. It would be recommended to install the aftermarket door lock upgrade kit (included with this auction) before enabling. Locks will still operate manually. The odometer trip reset button is broken. The trip reset assembly parts are included with the auction. There is an aftermarket fuel tank baffle installed. New OEM baffles are no longer available. The aftermarket models work fine but may not be as effective as the OEM baffle when the tank is low on fuel (less than 1/4th tank). Personally I just fill up when it's down to 1/4th and have had no issues. There is a leaking axle seal. The shop went to replace the seal but had difficulty removing the flange from the internal differential shaft. The job was aborted because 'the juice wasn't worth the squeeze'. As it is right now, gear oil may leak out until it gets below the level of the seal. The transmission holds a considerable amount of oil and will stay relatively healthy even when low on oil. The leak may cause the level to go down to 3/4ths full, which I've been advised is more than sufficient for typical usage. It would be good to add some gear oil before a long trip and be mindful to add some occasionally when doing other routine maintenance. There is an issue driver side front door hinge. A previous owner over-torqued the torsion bar at some point which has partially stripped where the bar would set in the hinge. The torsion bars themselves are fine and have been properly adjusted by the shop but because of the hinge the driver door will not open all the way by itself in cooler weather. In warmer weather the door will stay up after providing a little assistance to lift it. The fix would be to replace this hinge. The title has a “Rebuilt RI” designation on it. The previous owner was from Rhode Island where they do not issue titles on vehicles older than 10 years. The Iowa DoT investigator determined that at some point an insurance company took possession of this vehicle and Iowa law mandates the title must indicate this. I contacted the insurance company involved with this but because the claim was over 10 years ago they were not able to provide me any details. The investigator advised it may have been a theft claim and the insurance company resold the vehicle after recovery. The DMC shop did not find any evidence of flood or accident damage and I do not believe this past insurance history affected the condition of the car. Many of these issues are minor and this is probably more detail than you would receive on most auction listings. None of the issues will prevent a buyer from being able to enjoy the vehicle right away, yet if an owner wishes, improvements can be addressed in the future at his or her convenience. I am also including the workshop manual. The cover and a couple pages from the front are missing but the table of contents through the end of the book are still in tact. Also, the wealth of information available on the DMCtalk forums is invaluable, and typically the first place I go to troubleshoot any issue or to become familiar with any installation project. Feel free to contact me if you would like more detailed information on anything regarding this DeLorean. I would be happy to provide a phone number for verbal communication if desired. I drove the vehicle about 75 miles this weekend and created a short video to demonstrate that the vehicle is in good working order. You may access the video by clicking on this link or watch below. Please note that there are over 50 pictures below but some may require scrolling within the description itself to view depending on browser. Thanks! Multivex Mirrors - these are awesome for observing surrounding vehicles. A bit of the paint is bubbling on rear fascia. There is a small crack at the left corner front near headlight. Minor scratches on front fender, only noticeable with correct lighting. Minor scratches on front hood, only noticeable with correct lighting. Small dent in passenger door. Minor dents on top of passenger door. Driver side door hinge. New seat leather. Carpets are clean and in good shape. New fiberglass headliners and new sun visors. Battery cutoff, could be relocated or removed. I only use during winter when vehicle is not in use. The frame is in good condition overall but there are few areas that should be touched up to prevent rusting. This can be done by removing loose epoxy and repainting with POR-15 followed by Krylon Smoke Gray paint. The picture of one of the brake jobs is courtesy of DMC Midwest.
