Vehicle Detail
1968 DODGE POWER WAGON W200 4X4 Utiline (stepside) HISTORY:This truck started life as a special order U.S. Government vehicle for the Forest Service. It has several features which are very rare. At some point it became a fire truck in far Eastern Montana (very dry). I used it as a farm truck for the last 5 years. It has never let me down. This is a great truck, a true classic. It gets noticed everywhere it goes. This truck will take you where you want to go. ENGINE:The engine is a 225 slant six. At 63,000 miles it is barely broken in! It purrs like a kitten or howls like a banshee, depending on the rpm. Absolutely no smoke at start up. Burns no oil. No significant leaks. This engine likes to rev and gets out on the highway better than you would expect. If you want more power, the superpack or hyperpack 2-barrel carbs and headers will add about 50 more hp. It always performed great for me as is. POWER STEERING:The U.S. Gov. added Saginaw power steering to the truck. It is the sought after heavy duty "76" box with 4 mounting bolts. You can spin the wheels from lock to lock with your little finger. The cap on the power steering pump does need a new seal and drips. The flexible rag joint in the steering column has cracks and should be replaced with a u-joint. TRANSMISSION and TRANSFER CASE:The tranny is the very rare NP435-D3 CLOSE-RATIO 4-speed. Normally these came with a wide ratio tranny which is a 3-speed with a granny low. This transmission is far superior. It allows much closer shifts which keeps the engine in the power band. No revving and lugging like you are used to. This adds a lot of power and smoothness to the truck and is a real pleasure to drive. The clutch has no issues and works perfectly with no chatter. The transfer case is the stock divorced NP203. Again, with only 63,000 miles, it has no issues and shifts easily. This truck has tons of power in 4-low. It is designed to move very heavy loads over severe terrain. The driveshafts are a LOT bigger than those on later Dodges. AXLES:The axles are 8-lug heavy duty. The front is a Dana 44 with Warn locking hubs, the rear is a Full-floating Dana 60. The ratio is 4.88. I am not sure if it has limited slip or not. The brakes seem good, but could use bleeding or adjustment. SUSPENSION:This truck has the optional heavy-duty suspension. People often ask if it is lifted. It is STOCK. This truck has a ton of clearance. The shocks appeared recently replaced before I got the truck. TIRES:Cooper Discoverer STT (super traction tread) 8.75x16.5 The current tires are in almost new condition. They are siped for additional traction, despite already being a traction tire. Larger tires would give it more speed if that is what you want (33" tires will fit easy with no lift in these fenders). These tires give it lots of traction and low end torque. BODY:The body is very rust free considering it's age. Many of the common trouble spots are great on this truck. The government always pays extra for a thick undercoating. It is just starting to peel off to show shiny green paint underneath. It spent its life in far Eastern Montana which is very dry. The passenger door was dented and then bondoed. I was tempted to redo the bondo, but left it as is the bottom corner of the same door has a tiny amount of rust. The right rear fender has a fence-post shaped line in it. Most people probably wouldn't mention these, but I want you to know exactly what you are getting. When the truck was transfered to the MT State Forestry Department the truck was painted and painted and painted yellow. This is also why the body is so rust-free. Two of the boards in the bed could use patching. The rockers, fenders, cab-corners, cab-step, bed-step, hood hinge area, etc. are all rust free. This is a nice truck with show potential after a paint-job. This truck has the rare factory heavy duty grill guard and tow hooks. I have a pintle/ball combo hitch for the truck. INTERIOR:The cab is nice. Gauges all work. Heater is a real blaster. Fan knob missing but turns. Good old fashioned floor vents are real nice in the summer. Wing vents. The bench seat is nice except a small hole where someone wore a tool belt or similar. The passenger armrest is not attached but is present. Comes with a U.S. Government canteen and 1st aid kit free of charge. This era of cab is tapped and threaded for shoulder belts, but comes with lap belts. It has the special order government plaques. This is the first year of the padded dash. Paypal accepted. Sold as is. Buyer responsible for transport/shipping. No refunds or warranty. Here is the link: (let me know if it doesn't work)http://s491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/Ruckus99/1968%20Dodge%20Power%20Wagon%20W200/ I am happy to answer any more questions. I have been asked if the truck could be stored for bit while shipping is arranged. That is perfectly fine, especially considering the winter we have been having.
