Vehicle Detail
I'm offering for sale my 1976 Bob Sharp Racing 280Z GT-33. Bob Sharp is a Datsun racing legend and he along with Paul Newman used to race Z cars for Datsun in the 1970s. Bob owns the Datsun/Nissan dealership in Wilton, Connecticut and used to offer a GT-33 dealership package that featured his BSR accessories, custom interiors, and special paint jobs. Depending on the options chosen, the GT-33 package could nearly double the cost of the stock 280Z. From what I’ve been able to research, only about two dozen of these cars were ever created. If you want a rare, first generation Datsun Z car to restore, they don’t get any more rare than this. This GT-33 features the original motor and 4 speed transmission. I do not know what, if any, upgrades may have been done to the motor as part of the GT-33 package, but it does sport the Bob Sharp Racing valve cover. The last BSR valve cover that I’m aware of that came across eBay sold for $2,000 (no kidding!). The custom interior is in very good original condition, sporting custom seat covers and carpet. The rest of the interior appears stock, clean, and unmolested. The exterior has a beautiful silver and black paint scheme with hand-drawn pinstripes, GT-33 badging, and hand-drawn lettering on the hood. It also has rare headlight covers, air dam, and rear spoiler. Having been an upstate NY car, it has plenty of rust in most of the typical Z places. I touched up many of the spots to stop the rust in place (evident in the photos). The floors and frame rails are solid having been fabricated/replaced and do not look original. Doors are rusty. The rear hatch is entirely rust-free. I have some nice spare body parts (doors, fenders, etc.) that I will throw in free with the car for the new owner. I’m also including 4 nice Z rims with nearly new Yokohama Avid S/T tires. The car sat for a number of years and I went through the steps to get it running again. I boiled out/sealed the fuel tank, and boiled out/pressure tested the radiator. I replaced the fuel pump with a good OEM unit. It has new fuel lines, new NGK plugs, new plug wires, new distributor cap & rotor, and new air filter, oil filter, oil, and antifreeze. I had the car running back in November before the weather turned but was having trouble with the ignition switch. Now, the key doesn’t want to turn the car to “start” anymore, so plan on replacing the ignition switch. The clutch master cylinder probably needs rebuilt and I’ve done nothing with the brakes. My goal was just to get it to start and run. This car is a project - what you see is what you get. It has rust issues and you’ll want to go through the whole car before putting it back on the road. That said, it is an extremely rare Z that you won’t come across again. I currently have three Z cars and am trying to get down to having only one. I simply have too many other projects – when you come to pick the car up, you’ll see what I mean. I am located just outside of Richmond, VA. Serious potential bidders are welcome to come view the car. The title is in hand and in my name. I am offering this car with no reserve – high bidder is the new owner. Don’t miss this rare chance to own a piece of Bob Sharp history!
