Vehicle Detail
Ferrari produced the stunning Bertone-styled 308 Dino GT4 2+2 coupe from 1974-1980. Many Ferrari enthusiasts consider the rare 1974 Series 1 European specification coupes to be the most desirable of the model line as they feature the highest horsepower, lowest weight, a beautiful front fascia/spoiler that is fitted with Carello driving lights, small bumpers, and because their age makes them exempt from EPA emission/smog requirements in California. This particular 1974 Ferrari 308 Dino GT4 Series 1 Euro is additionally desirable as it just completed a full restoration in October 2010 by Gran Turismo, a noted Ferrari Specialist and 308 Dino GT4 experts in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. Photos of this restoration can be seen on the “Completed Projects” section of their website at www.granturismo.ca. Not only is it rare to find a coveted 308 Dino GT4 Series 1 Euro for sale, seldom does one find one that has been subjected to a complete restoration as this example has because one can easily spend 2 to 3 times the current market value of the car when undertaking such an endeavor. Below I’ll detail and illustrate how comprehensive this 308 Dino GT4 Series 1 Euro has been restored: Exterior: When the current owner purchased this car it was in a non-original Rosso Corsa (red) color. The owner opted to have the car repainted in its original Argento (silver) color since silver does an exceptional job of accentuating the striking Bertone body lines of the 308 Dino GT4. The entire driveline, interior, and all glass was removed when this was performed, allowing for a comprehensive color change and the engine bay area to be detailed. The original Campagnolo magnesium wheels were painted to match the car to give it a matching, monochromatic look and fitted with original Michelin XWX tires. A lighter weight and improved fiberglass rear bumper that is correct in appearance was installed upon the car being painted. Interior: The leather Crema interior with black piping cleaned-up beautifully and was found to have little wear so the owner opted to leave it alone with the exception of having the door panel insert material changed from Crema to black for a beautiful contrasting look. The owner also opted to have the dash recovered in black leather. Engine: The engine was complete rebuilt and improved with new main bearings, rod bearings, Wiseco 10.5:1 compression forged piston/ring set (i.e. instead of cast OE Borgo pistons), valves, springs, and a full gasket set. The carburetors were fully rebuilt with jets to match the pistons. The exhaust headers were coated with a hi-temperature ceramic coating to improve performance, reduce engine compartment temperatures, and improve the aesthetics of the engine bay. The radiator was re-cored with an additional core to improve cooling performance and all coolant hoses were replaced. The fuel tank sending unit was rebuilt and all fuel lines were replaced. The distributors were rebuilt and bench-tested. Once the initial break-in period was completed was successfully drive from Alliston, Ontario to Wisconsin with no problems. The car has been further tuned to perfection by Pebble Beach awarding-winning Ferrari restorer Motion Products of Neenah, Wisconsin. The result is a 308 Dino GT4 Series 1 Euro that idles smoothly, has acceleration that is both fast and smooth, and an incredible exhaust note from the Ansa exhaust. Transmission: The transmission was fully rebuilt with new synchros and a complete gasket set. It shifts tightly with rifle-action precision. A new clutch assembly was installed when the engine and transmission were put back in the car. Brakes, Steering and Suspension: The brake components and shocks were rebuilt and all steering/suspension bushings were replaced. Doing this has given the car a tight and well-balanced feel, inspiring confidence when driving on curvy roads. History: This 308 Dino GT4 Series 1 Euro has documented ownership history going back to 1985 when a previous owner imported the car from Italy. That owner’s daughter sold the car an independent Ferrari dealer in 2007 who sold the car to Gran Turismo and then to the current owner. The car does come with its original import documents as well as EPA and DOT paperwork, although this will not be needed when registering the car in California and most other states because the car’s age makes it exempt from emission requirements. The current owner of this 308 Dino GT4 Series 1 Euro is a Ferrari enthusiast that is well-known in the Ferrari Club of America and has owned over 18 Ferraris, 12 of which have been vintage models. Summary: This 1974 Ferrari 308 Dino GT4 Series 1 Euro will be incredible value for a Ferrari enthusiast who understands that it is prudent to purchase a vintage Ferrari that has already been restored instead of a “driver” or project car. This Ferrari should easily pass any rational pre-purchase inspection with flying colors. Although this 308 Dino GT4 Series 1 Euro has been comprehensive restored, please note that only the following items will be included with it: · 3-ring binder that contains import and EPA/DOT import documents · Full-size Campagnolo spare with a new Michelin XWX tire mounted on it · Jack kit · One set of keys · Owner’s manual (manual only, no owner’s manual packet or other manuals are included) · Tool kit roll (roll only, no tools in roll) Please also note that the owner will happily assist interested parties with arranging a pre-purchase inspection at their expense; however, this must be completed prior to buying the car or submitting an offer on eBaymotors. Terms: A $2,000 non-refundable Paypal or wire transfer deposit is due within 24 hours of the auction ending with the remaining balance paid within 5 business days.
