Vehicle Detail
1977 Pontiac Trans Am, original 400, 4 speed, Hurst T-Tops, numbers matching car. This was my son's car and in 2008 he invested over $20,000.00 into rebuilding the car. The car had 98,000 original miles on it when purchased and he has used it as a daily driver since then and has driven it approximately 15,000 miles. In 2008 the original 400 was rebuilt with new pistons, rings, rocker arms, valves, valve springs, oil pump, distributor, exhaust, camshaft etc. The transmission was checked and found to be in good shape. The clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and throwout bearing were replaced along with the Z bar, clutch rod and all related hardware. The rear was rebuilt with new bearings, bushings, shocks, sway bar, brake calipers, brake cylinders and parking brake cables. The gas tank and sending unit were replaced with new units and the original Quadrajet was rebuilt. The front subframe was also rebuilt with new ball joints, springs, upper and lower A arm bushings, shocks, wheel bearings, brake calibers etc. The radiator, power steering pump, alternator, starter, air conditioner compressor, heater core, brake lines, master cylinder and booster were all replaced. The car has headers and a stainless steel Pypes X exhaust on it now, however the original exhaust manifolds and catalytic convertor brackets come with the car. Basically every nut, bolt bushing and part on this car was added new in 2008. In every instance OEM parts were used and when they weren't available we used the highest quality parts we could find. The body was stripped and new rear quarter panels were installed by a professional body shop and the car painted. The carpet and headliner were also replaced, however the seats are original and the front seats have begun to split and need to be replaced. The original 8 Track is in the car and still works. My son replaced the original AM radio with a AM/FM from a 1978 Firebird. This radio was also modified to accept an Ipod jack. The original AM radio comes with the car along with the original owners manual and related documents. We have a receipt for every cent spent on this car and we also have the original build sheet. This car was originally silver with a blue interior and during the rebuild my son opted to paint it Lucerne Blue, I don't think this color was available until 1979. The car also came with Rally wheels and my son replaced them with WS6 honeycomb wheels. The original Rally wheels and ALL of the original parts come with this car. EVERY part, bracket and piece that came from the factory is still with this car. The Hurst T-Tops are original and in good shape, along with the T-top bags, stow away spare and jack. The economy is forcing the sale of this car. To answer some questions I've received. The trunk and floor pans on the car appear to be solid, the body shop did replace the front driver side floor pan with a replacement pan when the body work was done, the trunk was untouched and was in good shape as were the rear frame rails. The transmission is the original T-10 and it was visually inspected in 2008 and found to be in excellent condition. The original Hurst shifter was rebuilt, is in the car, and works great. The transmission shifts and drives great with no noise or problems, however there is a slight leak from the rear seal. Included with the car at sale will be the $500.00 factory rebuild kit that my son purchased for the transmission in 2008, but never used. This kit includes ALL NEW bearings, seals, synchronizers, the lower shaft etc. This is a quality complete rebuild kit, not some cheap after market kit. If anyone has a specific area of the car that they want photos of just send me a message and I will try to get them to you as soon as possible, it may take a day or two with the snow we are getting. Let me add that this is not a show quality car with no flaws. It was rebuilt in 2008 using the best parts available and the car was left stock with the exception of what has been listed above. It has been garaged and kept from the weather but my son has driven in almost daily and has put 15,000 miles on the car since that time. What you will be getting is a mechanically sound car that looks great, has ALL of the original parts with it, can be driven anywhere and needs very little work. To answer some more questions. The dash is in perfect condition with NO cracks or blemishes and all of the factory gauges work with the exception of the clock in the tachometer. There are a box of extra factory gauges and an instrument cluster that come with the car and many of these work and can be kept as spares. The air conditioner compressor and other A/C parts on the car were all new in 2008, however my son did not use the A/C and it will probably need to be checked before use. Let me stress the major parts of the A/C system were new and a complete brand new A/C seal kit comes with the car. There is an extra pickup load of parts that come with this car to include the original rally wheels, a spare WS6 honeycomb rim, ALL the original brackets not used with the exhaust, the original distributor, an extra passenger window glass, a used front air dam, an extra center console, a spare hood and numerous other body and mechanical parts purchased by my son during the rebuild and not used.
