Vehicle Detail
1963 Volkswagen Cabriolet convertible second owner origional miles. This car was bought new on April 30th, 1963 at Lawrence Motors in Ramsey, New Jersey. It was bought by Harold Detlefs for his wife. Sometime in 1965, the Detlets moved to Rockville, Maryland. Mr. Detlets passed on sometime around 1975, and his wife refused to use the car again. It was parked in a barn behind the Rockville home. Mrs. Detlets moved to assited living in 1982, the property was sold, and the land cleared for develpement. My friend Jerry resuced the car from the barn before it was torn down. He saved it all these years as a retirement project, but now health issues force him to sell. Brake work was done and the engine removed at the shop where it is stored, and king pins replaced both sides. This is a very nice, solid unmolested original car. The car has its accessory back up light. The miles you see in the picture of the speedometor is actual. Car comes with all orginal documentation, including all service tickets, bill of sale, and WINDOW STICKER. It has been stored inside either in Rockville, Maryland or Arlington, Virginia since 1982. It has not spent one day outside since Jerry bought it. It appears never to have been wrecked. the headliner, door panels, and top are original equipment. The steeing wheel has a nice ivory finish that is not worn down. The car is very solid: the floor pans are absolutely solid, as are the fire wall, rear shelf, body mounts, and quarter panels. I own 55, 61, and 63 ragtops. Color is Beryl Green. The back seat fabric is gone, only the springs remain. The front seats are in good shape; they would likey clean up with Spray Nine. The boot is there, but it is stained. It does not appear torn. The carpet panels on the side areas are gone and so are the rubber floor mats-replaced by home made items. The running boards are missing as well. The right quarter panel has a small dent in it, as does the rear engine lid (several). These dents look like they came from stuff bumping the car during its time in the barn. The car has been repainted once. The bumpers are with the car. They were removed by Jerry so he could fit it into the garage where he stored it after purchase. The bumpers are not perfect, but can be used. The only rust the car has is in the secondary channel that convertibles have which runs under the main heater channel. Both sides will have to be replaced. They are available from Mid American Motor works. The main heater channels are solid except for area near the jack point. The hose you see hanging down on the right side is the accessory defroster hose from the engine to the dash. This feature is mentioned in the window sticker. The engine is out of the car. It is the car's second engine, and has a weak number three exhaust valve and rings. It ran OK-number three pumped al little oil, but not enough to fowl the plug. Jerry was going to have it overhauled by the owner of the shop before the owner became ill. The accessories have been removed from the engine. The top has two weak spots where it folds over the center of the front door. The center of the top, and back window are tight and in good shape. The glass is all good, does not appear to be fuzzy around edges. Buyer to arrange pick up, and all associated logistics. I can help load car where it is. It must be towed or flatbeded. Cash, paypal, or money order. Payment in full, no financing. You may come look at the car. The business is 3408 Wilson Blvd, Arlington VA 22204. Feel free to ask questions.
