Vehicle Detail

Up for auction is a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS 4WD in fair to good condition. I have owned this vehicle for about 9 years of what is about to be 14 years on the road. It has been a great vehicle and can to continue to be for someone else! I bought the truck while I was in college. I needed an SUV because I play music in several bands and often haul equipment. Most of the miles came from this time period, as I was running across the state pretty often to go home to see family. So, most of the miles are highway miles. The truck does well on the highway for an older model SUV. Right now, it gets about 15 mpg. After college, I moved home and built houses for about a year. The truck was in good shape and doing everything I had asked of it, so I held on to and used it as a work truck. I never hauled any really heavy loads or greasy tools. Mostly just carpenter tools, ladders, and wood. The work was very dusty in the summer and often mud would find its way into the truck after a rainy day. That is why you will see that carpet is not in perfect condition. There is some staining. These stains may easily come out with a good carpet shampooing, but I have not taken the time to do so. I need my vehicles to be utilitarian, not showroom trucks. After that year of hard labor, I got a job here in Lexington Ky with a company car. This truck does not get driven often and I am finally in a spot in my life where I can reward myself with a new vehicle. I am selling this truck for that very reason. I just bought a new vehicle and have no need for this one anymore. It would make a great work vehicle, first vehicle, or provide a decent family vehicle for cheap and with no payments (a huge plus in our current economy!). I have always been very particular about maintenence on our vehicles ever since I turned 16. Regular oil changes, Trans Fluid Changes, Filter Changes, and preventative maintenence on commonly worn parts have always kept my cars running well. That's exactly why this car is going on 14 years old and runs great. That being said, this vehicle is not listed in perfect condition. I have listed it in "FAIR to GOOD" condition. It does have some issues that could be addressed, but have not/do not affect the functionality of this vehicle. Also, for being 14 years old, there are some great bonuses as well in the maintenence catagory! First, the bad news. Currently there a few things keeping this truck in the "fair condition" catagory. First and foremost is that the rear cam seal leaks oil. The cam seals were replaced at 111,045 miles. I suppose one of them didn't hold. After about a year post replacement, it began to leak. I noticed this very quickly because when I was driving across the state to and from college, I always checked the oil before leaving. One day, it was low, so when I got home, I checked it out. At the time, I was flat broke (college, ya know) and could not afford to replace the seal again. With the leak, the oil level never got low enough on the dipstick to drop below the operating level. Over time, I just decided it was easier on my wallet to just continue with a leak and check the oil regularly. About a year after that, the truck, which was now gaining in age, began to burn oil. When I was driving it regularly on long trips, it would use a bit less than a quart a month and has held steady at that consumption rate since. I had already been into the engine once and decided to deal with the oil issues the way I had been. I check the oil regularly and add when necessary. I continued oil changes and filter changes on regular basis. This can be a pain, but really, the truck has always had very fresh oil in the engine! Other minor issues are that the turn signal is stuck on left turn. This probably means the relay is stuck, but I haven't replaced or checked it out, as it doesn't really bother me that much. There is a CB radio in the dash. It works well, but the antenna was broken off by my garage door. I no longer had anyone to chat with on the CB so I didn't replace it. The drivers seat has a small hole in the fabric about the size of a quarter. This has not spread much if at all in the last two years and the interior fabric has some staining from the work I have used the vehicle for. You could likely fix the hole with a needle and thread, I just haven't (as I said...work truck). The widshield washers do not spray. They worked great til I ran out of fluid. I think the pumps need to be primed from running them dry. I know it may seem like a lot, but I hate suprises when you pick up your purchase. I don't want you to have to deal with that!! There are some cosmetic issues on the exterior as well. Minor denting and dings on the fender and hood are from normal highway driving. The front bumper is scratched. That is from a time when I used my truck to push a blown down fence back up and re-secure it. The is a fender flange missing next to the scratch as you can see in the pics. This just flew off many years ago driving on the highway. The clips holding it on must have given up on me! The front bumper also has two cuts in it with frame bumper guards coming through about an inch on each side. I had gone to the gym early one morning to work out. A man meeting another person in the same parking lot for a carpool had his foot on his brake while reading the paper, waiting for his friend. While doing so, he was unaware that he had relaxed his foot and was idling across the parking lot, directly into the front of my vehicle. An accident report was made and I took an insurance check from his agency for the price of the bumber. Yet again, it didn't really bother me much, so I cashed the check and used the money elsewhere. There are some dents in the rear hatch too. While working as a pizza delivery person in college, I backed into a row of concrete barriers that had leaned over as the parking lot settled and "poked" the back of my truck. No major damage and I didn't want it on my insurance, so I moved on. Now the Good News!!!The best thing about this vehicle is that it still works great and is very reliable. I would not hesitate to jump in and take off on a long trip, so long as I had some oil with me. The interior is comfortable and the A/C and Heat work great. The windshield is new. I bought this car from a man in Cincinnatti who had put a bunch of TVs in it. The review mirror was actually a TV screen, so I got rid of it. The new windshield is very clean, with no chips/scratches, and has a mount for a new rear view mirror. There is a Reese Hitch 2" Reciever and the truck tows a trailer well (the wire plug is corroded and may need replacement). The next best thing is that I have taken great care of functional parts of this truck. Following is a listing of all the maintenence performed and at what mileage. All of this work was done as preventative as parts begain to show wear...not after mechanical breakdown.111,045- New Timing Belt, Water Pump, Cam Seals, Spark Plugs, Wires.143, 952- New Upper "A Frame" left and right with bushings, Upper and Lower Ball Joints Replaced on both sides, New Wheen Bearings on both sides, greased all fittings151, 352- Front and Rear Calipers Replaced, New Rotors170,000- New Shocks and Struts front and rear*All Oil Changes, Trans Fluid Changes, Filters (air, oil, trans,), tires and rotations done on regular schedules as necessary per mileage requirements As you can see, much of the working parts of the vehicle have been replaced to ensure long life for the truck. The Tires on the truck are in great shape and have about 85% tread on them. The tires are fairly knobby all terrain tires that are great for getting off the pavement, but are not mud tires and do not creat excessive road noise while driving. As I mentioned earlier, the previous owner had about 7 TV screens, DVD player, TV Tuner, VCR, 22" Chrome Wheels, Four 15"Kicker CompVR Subwoofers, and amplifiers for 2400 watts of power in this truck. I removed all of this and sold it to pay for the vehicle and make it usable for what I needed for. That said, If you pull up some carpet or remove some interior panels, you will find wiring from those systems. All of that video wiring is under that passenger front seat and was left there because it was easier to leave it than pull up all the carpent and headliner for removal. It does not affect the vehicle's function. The Four Wheel Drive works great and has helped me in many situations, especially in snow. This truck is not extemely heavy and has a great weight to power ratio. That coupled with a strong, true 4WD has kept this truck moving when larger "stronger" SUVs were sidelined. You will be quite impressed with its 4WD capabilities, especially for a mid-size SUV!!! Take a look at the pictures. You will see a nice looking vehicle that has served me well and has plently of life in her! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Will be accepting offers and truck is for sale locally, so auction may end at anytime without notice. I have a file folder of reciepts and mileage records for work done that will go with the vehicle. Remember, the vehicle is 14 years old and is being sold as is. I think you will find "as is" as a pretty good deal. Kelly Blue Book value in fair condition= $2,635 Offers Accepted Good Luck!!!!
