Vehicle Detail

This is a 1987 Vanagon Westfalia that I have owned since late 2002. I bought this van to do cross country trips with, and have done over 20,000 miles across the states with it. The Van was mostly used in 2003 and 2004, and has been used sparingly since. Most recently, it has sat for the past year and a half with no use at all. I recently (last week) put a new battery in it, replaced a couple of rubber hoses in the engine bay that looked liked they needed it, and ran new antifreeze through the system, and it started right up without hesitation. It was always a strong runner, and whenever brought to a mechanic they always commented on how strong it ran, Just before the van sat for the year and a half, it had over $1300 worth of labor and parts put into it. At that time it had gotten a tune up and and oil change so the oil in it is new. Over the years it has gotten new tires, new waterpump, new alternator, new soundsystem with speakers, new balljoints, and many other things that I can´t remember off the top of my head. I have everything documented and will come with the van in the purchase. If I had to guess, I alone have put 4 or 5 thousand dollars into it. All of that money has been to make it mechanically perfect, nothing for looks. When I bought the van it had about 20,000 miles on a rebuilt motor. So the motor has about 45,000 miles on it now. I have the documention of other things that have been done with the van since before I owned it as well. Since the van has been sitting, I cannot say what it needs mechanically, but I would expect that it does in fact need something after sitting for so long so bid accordingly. Keep in mind that it did start right up, which is a very good sign. I looked underneath the van, and there really isn´t as much rust as would be expected by looking at the exterior. As you can see in the photos, the van has some rust and dents. I bought the van with the dents already there, and the rust has gotten slightly worse in the past 8 years since owning it. I´ve taken photos of all the major defects, but keep in mind that there are most likely little things that are not visible in the photos. The canvas tent for the pop top roof has 3 holes, 2 smaller ones and one larger one. The larger one is about 7 inches in length. I assume these could be patched, otherwise the top needs to be replaced. The canvas was in perfect condition before the van sat, but the rubber sealing on the outside of the pop top needs to be replaced, or simply put back into place. Water has definitly been the reason for the holes in the canvas. The interior of the van is in suprizingly good condition for its age. There are a few stains on the carpet and upolstry, but I´d say its the vans best quality. The fridge, sink and stove all worked last I checked, but I´m not sure if thats still the case, so keep it in mind. The stove has never even been used as far as I know because it still has the blue plastic covering on it from when the van was new. The interior draws could use the cleaning as they look a little dusty, and one of them has a stain inside it. The front blinkers need to be replaced, and there is a chip in the windshield that can be fixed, it doesn´t need to be replaced. The tail lights, head lights, fog lights, brake lights all work. The roller for the driverside window is missing the nob used to roll down the window, but its easy enough to roll it down still. Like I said earlier, there may be things that the van needs, but I am not sure what. I couldn´t imagine it to be anything major as it starts right up. The van is sitting in my driveway, and will be picked up from there. You will handle the pickup details, whether that be by pickup service or tow truck, or insuring it and driving it yourself. I have many fond memmories with this van, and never wanted to sell it. That was part of the reason why it sat unused for so long. I always thought I´d use it for another advanture on the road and couldn´t bare to sell it. I´ve realized I´m the one neglecting it now, and want it to go to a good home. Goodluck bidding on it. Oh, and I forgot to mention that it comes with a CB radio! Super fun on the road talking to truckers along the way. Also comes with other misc stuff like hose for water at camp sites, two spaceheaters, for sleeping in colder climates, extra antifreeze, oil, a camping shower, first aid kit, extra brake pads, umbrella, and a bunch of other things like duct tape and stuff. All useful things for on the road travel when in the middle of nowhere.
