Vehicle Detail
1988 BMW 635csi. Very well cared for California car. No rust and all original except a newer radio system. Hard to find these BMWs clean and not butchered and pimped. Usual wear for a car this age but far more presentable than most 635s of this vintage. We always have people looking at it in the parking lot when we come out of the store. Just a nice, clean original 635 with some patina. This late 1980's BMW is argued to be one of the top 5 models BMW ever built. It becomes obvious when taking a close look at the car that this was a very, very high-end sport coupe in its day. It was revolutionary at the time. It only takes a few minutes of observation to see how high-end and well built these 635s were. The fit and finish, the smell of the leather interior, even installed up the A pillar posts, the very cool rear seating arrangement with a rear AC, about 8 electric seat adjustments including the headrests up and down, the smooth quiet powerful acceleration, the onboard computer, programmable transmission from sport to economy mode, cruise all day at 120mph like you are glued to the road. It was truly the "King of the Autoban." This particular 6 cylinder engine built by BMW is known for being bulletproof and good for an easy 250K miles with simple maintenance. Do your homework and all this will be validated. These cars sold for $46,000 in the 1980's. A fabulous bargain in the current market. A lot of car for the money. I am not an expert on BMWs and do not claim to be, so you need to be. I just did some research on this model. This light blue metalic California car has been well cared for. Actually low miles for its age. Normal wear and patina in all the usual places, leather seats, some fading in the paint, pitting on the alloy wheels, but it is all original. Here is the BEST benefit for this particular listing. The transmission in this car was replaced in Nov. 2009 by a factory trained BMW shop for over $4,300. I have the receipt. What else can you do but pay the money to get the car back on the road when it won't drive! These selectable automatic transmissions are quite a piece of engineering and it has been replaced now and so will not be an issue for the buyer. So with a low reserve, you are basically buying the transmission and getting the rest of the car for FREE! I purchased this car for my son for high school graduation a year ago, who has enjoyed it but he is now off at college and the car was left here and is just not being used. He does not want it at the university. We keep it well maintained but as a older car there are always items required at any time to keep it working at top performance. It is better to drive the car than leave it stored here. By the time we use it again things will end up not working. Things start leaking etc. if you do not drive these cars. You can see that it is not perfect and needs some things, ie. it will need a set of tires soon, see the pics. Just simple things like that. Don't fool yourself, these cars do need maintenance to keep the performance up there. But this one is as good as they come at this price range. You can see that I have a 100% feedback. It is because I sell items fair and leave room for the buyer to enjoy it and sell it later for a few dollars profit. I want the buyer to be happy with the car so it is priced low. This allows a margin for any issues that a picky buyer might find. It is an older car and anything can happen at any time so I must sell this as-is, so please ensure this is the car you have been waiting for. Bidding and buying means you accept this. You will not be disappointed for this kind of money. These cars can sell for 6-10 thousand. This is offered far, far less. We can store the car here for 30 days while you find transportation. On Dec-16-10 at 21:38:07 PST, seller added the following information: Some updates on questions asked. Yes the headliner looks fine. Yes, it does have an airbag and it does have the rear sunshade that pulls up in the back, but one clip is broken on one side that holds it up. Should find a fix part at a BMW yard or use a paperclip. Yes, the AC runs cold and you may not know that this car has a rear AC system. This rear system has vents that keep soda cans cold inside the rear center console armrest. How cool is that! (pun intended.) I am pleased the car met reserve and is sold. Now it is just a race to see who it is sold to. I think the fair price leaves a good margin for any issues you may want to work on. Here is an example of my fairness and why I have a 100% feedback. I told a bidder that I did not see anything leaking. I saw a couple drops of hydraulic fluid 2 days ago. I ran it down to my BMW shop and it looked like the powerbrake/steering servo was seeping. I could have left it like that as it still worked but it was obvious that it was seeping and would fail sometime, so I had it replaced with a new one. For me it was a safety issue, if involved with brakes and steering and I could not sell the car with it like that. $900 and you now have a new servo installed. I did NOT need to spend $900 with the car going out the door next week but it was the right thing to do. I would have rather had some new seat upholstery or a new set of tires, but what the heck. You do what you have to do. So at this $5000 selling price the car is a great bargain. Thanks and God Bless.
