Vehicle Detail
Treasure in Disguise: 1971 Porsche 911E Sunroof Coupe! Presented here is a genuine 1971 Porsche 911E 2.2 Coupe, one of just 1,088 manufactured during the model year. Of those, only 8% came factory-equipped with the electric sunroof. Almost 40 years later, it's safe to say that a mere handful of these rare Sunroof Coupes have survived. The update includes an incorrect fiberglass decklid with ducktail rear spoiler, which was the hippest thing to have on a 911, thirty-some years ago. The factory-stamped VIN, *9111200300*, irrefutably confirms this car's identity, the 5th digit identifying it as a 911E model. (1= 911T; 2= 911E; 3= 911S.) In contrast, this Porsche's original color was Metallic Silver (paint code #8080-H), as confirmed by the factory date plate. The factory finish is still nicely preserved in the trunk. While rather uncommon in 1971, today, Metallic Silver must be one of the most desirable colors for any Porsche 911. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Extremely important: the vulnerable "nose" section is undamaged and free of corrosion. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) White pearl paint is decades old and displays plenty of nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, and a few rust bubbles. It looks far better in pictures than up close; certainly, this valuable Porsche deserves to be returned to its original silver glory. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The interior looks acceptable, but it's nothing to write home about. Door panels need to be replaced. Carpeting is clean. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dashboard is nicely preserved and has only minor hairline cracks on top. All the gauges work as they should, save for the speedo. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Front seats are undamaged, yet upholstered in an IKEA-like fashion, reminiscent of the swingin' Seventies! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Rear seats fold down for additional cargo space. Lower cushions are MIA. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) A non-matching-numbers 2.2-Liter power plant, No. *6106203*, provides motorvation. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The engine starts up willingly and displays a good oil pressure. It doesn't smoke, nor does it leak oil! The undercarriage is that of a genuine California survivor. It's all "natural," sans spray can artistry or fresh undercoating. A perfect example of the kind of car people from all over the world like to find here in California: it's unusually dry and rust free. With the marine layer hovering, we decided to head inland, toward Ojai. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Pump the gas pedal twice, turn the key, and the engine awakens with a roaring sound. After allowing it to wake up entirely for half a minute, it settles into a mellow idle. Put the gear lever in first and off you go. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Driving this Porsche is a pleasant experience. The clutch feels healthy; acceleration is smooth. Equipped with the Type 915 5-speed transmission, gear changes are a bit stiff, most likely due to a misaligned shift linkage or worn synchros. The trans might need to be gone through. Oh well. There are no shakes and shimmies, and the car drives straight as an arrow. Brakes anchor the car with authority, but should be inspected nonetheless before using this 911E as a daily driver. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) While this 911 needs a bit of tender loving care, it is a very valuable car per se. Even a non-matching numbers 911E -- with a factory electric sunroof -- is a $30K car in today's market. We were tempted to cosmetically backdate this Porsche ourselves, but there's only so much we can do without losing focus on numerous other projects awaiting our attention. We therefore decided to sell this car "as is" to somebody willing to invest a bit of time and money. It'll be worth it!
