Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 1966 Pontiac GTO hardtop. 1966 was a significant year for the mighty GTO. Building upon the bold performance and styling heritage the GTO had established, 66 GTOs retain a family resemblance to the 65 GTOs yet are clearly not a twin. New sheet metal was introduced for 1966. Longer than previous GTOs, the profile of the car exudes might. In keeping with Pontiac’s desire in the 1960s to reach out to the “in crowd”, the buyers and fans of European cars, the car uses far less chrome trim then most American cars of the day. Employing a dignified style, the vertical headlights, an industry leading plastic grill, an aggressive ornamental hood scoop and possibly the coolest looking tail lights in the history of mass-produced automobiles; 1966 became the top selling year in the history of the GTO. From any vantage point, front, side or rear, the car looks as if it is moving even when standing still. The interior is all-new for 1966. The dash pad is enlarged and the four instrument pods are faced with wood veneer. Bucket seats were still standard equipment, however the seat material and door panel material is redesigned for 1966. The result is a slightly tamer looking interior. This could be a result of Pontiac wishing to expand the market of the GTO to a wider age group of potential buyers. The car presented here offers a significant opportunity for the right artist to form this raw piece of marble into a beautiful work of art. The great news is the car is in a state where the new owner can see exactly what he is buying and then confidently precede to restore the car to Concours standards, A.A.C.A., or Pontiac-Oakland Club standards, or he could make this car into an ultra high tech pro-touring car. To many, the 1966 GTO represents the zenith of muscle car styling. This affords an opportunity to recreate a desirable car in its original splendor or you could install an all-modern driveline and modern comfort features and still maintain the cars timeless good looks. A long time Pontiac enthusiast one said to me, “a 60s Pontiac is an iron fist in a velvet glove.” The iron fist of this car is a YS coded 389 Pontiac V8. The cylinder heads are 093 castings. The car has a 4 BBL AFB carburetor and an automatic transmission. Pontiac states this combination delivers 335 horsepower. The automatic is shifted via a floor shifter surrounded by a console. The Strato bucket seats are in fine mechanical shape. They will obviously need to be recovered as part of the full restoration. The interior is nicely complimented by an original custom sports wheel (a.k.a. wood wheel). The steering wheel, bucket seats, and console are all very costly items to purchase individually. The frame of this “goat” is very solid, the floorboards are quite good, and the trunk floor is better then fair. I have included photos of these items for your review. The body of the car obviously needs restoration. The main areas of need being the bottoms of the fenders, the quarter panel wheel openings and the rear tail panel. These items are represented in the included photos. Replacement repair panel are easily acquired for these areas of concern. The doors are very good showing only some surface rust from “sitting around”. Other items worth note, the car has a re-chromed rear bumper and a very good “core” front bumper. It comes with the highly sought after correct tail lights which are in good shape. The car has power steering, power brakes, an accessory tissue dispenser, a black vinyl top and an optional heavy-duty 7-blade fan. I have included a photo of the data plate for those who wish to decode the car. Although this is a large project ---- it is a worthy one! Muscle cars have achieved a level of respect once reserved only for the classics of the 30s. They are the new coin of the realm. Here is an opportunity to own the originator of the breed in the most popular model of the most popular year. Buy it and make it your own no matter how you choose to restore it. · Payment can be made by wire transfer, cash in person, or cashiers check.
