Vehicle Detail
Hello and welcome to another Houseofhotrod auction! Today I am listing a 1964 Pontiac Tempest Coupe. This isn't any old '64 Tempest, it's a V8 powered 2 door with no rust, super low miles that runs and drives like a car that's been loved it's entire life. You know the type - and you can tell when you drive them. Solid, tight, and just a joy to drive. The owner of the car does not want to sell it, but at this time he must. I have spent some time around it, and I gotta tell you, I really enjoy this car, and would love to own it! Please note that at this time we have drastically reduced the reserve price, and the car has a buy it now that is nearly 3000.00 under the last reserve price! This is a wonderful super solid runner and driver that will absolutely be a blast to own. I will do my best to describe it so that you feel you know it, and to point out any and all problems (none that I can find on this car!). It's hard to show the total story of this car in the words I use and only 4 pictures, plus another 80 or so more I squeaked in, but again - I will do my best, I tried to use pictures that covered the overall feel and look of the car. I use lower resolution so that anyone in the world can download them with relative ease. The pictures are taken at McMinnville Oregon's Evergreen Aviation Museum - home of the one and only Spruce Goose. They are very nice folks that let me snap my pictures there at the museum. The plane behind the car is a 1944 Douglas C47A Skytrain. Not just any C47 Skytrain - it's one that flew troops that parachuted into Normandy on D-day, as well as flying various missions before and after that day in history. If you're ever in town, stop by and see this awesome pair of museums - there is an Air and Space Museum there, as well as an Imax theater. Please be aware that this car is advertised and for sale locally, nationally and globally, and we do reserve the right to end this auction at any time if the vehicle sells before auction ends. This car is definitely for sale and definitely on the money price wise. If you are SERIOUS about this car - please call my cell # 503.580.6225 If I don't answer the first time - try again later - if I am at work I may not be able to answer your call. Please be considerate of the time. We have little ones that need to get their sleep. Someone's gonna get an awesome mid 60's Pontiac muscle car in their garage! This is a unique opportunity to own a car to enjoy, to show, to drive - and most of all have fun with. The value is here, the timing is right. You will never lose. Buy it today and be the envy of those who hesitated and missed it. 1964 was a BIG year for Pontiac - it was the first year of the famed GTO. While this car is a Tempest, the same body used as the platform for the GTO - it is NOT a clone. Yes it has a GTO emblem up front, but that's about it. It has a similar look and feel - but is definitely not trying to be something it isn't. This '64 Tempest was born in Baltimore Maryland, and it appears to have lived its entire life here in Oregon. It was purchased by a woman who owned it until just a couple years ago. She ended up being the proverbial 'little old lady'. The gentleman who owns the car is the second owner - so you will be the third. The low low mileage we are told is original, and the family of the lady who had owned the car vouched for same - we have no documentation of this however, jjust so you know up front. It drives out like it too. This car has never been hot rodded, customized, cut on modified or anything at all - this car is the real deal - super solid and just a nice and tidy classic car. It even had the original 14 inch wheels and little bitty tires until just recently - the wheels were not kept, but the wheel covers were, and they come with the car. It's never had a stereo, never had headers, never had speakers cut in, etc. Let's go through the car from front to back. The cowl tag shows the car to have it's original shade of Yorktown Blue. The interior was originally blue, but is now black. It has what we believe is the original 326 engine. It's not hi performance, but has plenty of snap. It's not a leaker or a smoker, and starts and runs just like it should - no funny noises or anything like that - just a neat and peppy driver. It has an original pair of factory chrome valve covers on it (from a '67 or so engine) to dress it up a bit. Other than that- completely, and I mean completely stock. Here's the numbers from the engine for all you numbers guys: The block casting # is 9773153 and the casting date reads B 13 4; head castings are both 9773345; and the block on the front is stamped with 960, and below that 299740. Upon researching these #'s, this tells us that the engine is most likely original to the car, as it should be, I guess we call it numbers matching. Carburetor is the original 2 barrel. Transmission is stock (powerglide), and works just like it should, shifting on the column. If you look close in the pictures the battery cables are still the original spring ring type clamps, and they are pretty darned nice. If the miles are more, it's sure amazing how much stuff is stock on it. The brakes are stock, and it has had new wheel cylinders installed. The wheels are now 15 inch California Custom (Cragar look alike) wheels all around wrapped in 195-60x15's up front and 215-70x15's out back. These are either new or near new. The car sits at a nice and tasty rake. The license plates on the car go with it - they are the ones that Oregon DMV assigned to it when it was brand new. Inside the car is pretty much new. The original upholstery was just old, and brittle (the car IS 46 plus years old!) so the second owner replaced a lot of it - at the time he did this, he installed buckets instead of the stock bench, as most of the foam was just gone. Headliner, door panels, carpet, seat upholstery etc is all brand new. Weatherstrips were replaced, but only as needed - the door weatherstrips are still original! Inside the car is very clean and serviceable. Window fuzzies and all that have been replaced. Windshield is new, the back window resealed. The radio is original, but will need a new speaker. Antenna is original as well. The heater core is new (note the spring type hose clamps on most of the heater hoses). The wiring is all original and uncut. The dome lamp works when you open the door. Wipers work. Lighter works. The clock is inop. The car has power steering, so drives smoothly down the road, and parks with ease. The speedometer works, but the odometer quit working about 100 or so miles ago - it got slower and slower, and then just quit. The car was a non smokers car, so no stink there - in fact it smells like new due to the new interior. The trunk floor had a bit of rot from the typical leaky trunk weatherstrip, so it was repaired with correct new panels where needed. The trunk holds the original spare and jack. There was never any rust or rot in the floor of the car itself - so no repairs were neccesary. The chrome is pretty much all original, and has held up well - bumpers etc appear to have never had a rechrome. The car was garaged most all of it's life, and obviously was driven - mostly in town type driving. The car did recieve a new coat of paint in it's original shade of Yorktown Blue. The paint had gotten dull, and pretty much gone away - a typical problem with metallics from this era, it wasn't all that shiny when new. It's now done in a base coat/clear coat finish which could be buffed to a mirror finish, but was not to make it appear more stock - it's only had a minor buffing to make it look as if it had original paint. It has not had accident damage, and is super straight and rust free. No bubbles, not pinholes - just no rust. All the stainless is nice. The car is not a concours type show car - it's a driver. Is it dependable and a blast to drive? Yes. Hop in, turn the key and go. This is the kind of car that once you find, you keep - because cars like this don't come along often. Remember it's not been detailed, the car is just as it is - this is how the car has been kept - not fluffed or buffed, no phoney rattle can details (other than some engine detailing) or undercoat - just is what it is, a nice solid great driving classic mid 60's Pontiac Coupe. Always garaged, not rain driven. The car was built to drive, and enjoy, not for the floor of a car show, or museum. Is it tone of the most solid and the most honest old cars out there? Yes. It's not perfect, but is a super solid car, and is a wonderful driver - that will turn many heads, win trophies in local car shows, and give the new owner years of pride of ownership, thousands of thumbs up, and an enjoyment that nothing but a classic car will bring you. Own it, enjoy it - show it!! You'll never lose a penny if you treat it right - better than stocks and bonds (especially in today's market!), and more fun than money in the bank. Please remember we have radically dropped the reserve, and the buy it now is nearly 3k under what the reserve was. Yes - opportunity IS knocking. Let's talk! Thank you for looking and bidding!!
