1963 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible -Reliable Classic Vintage Automobile ORIGINAL 1963 California Car -only 4 owners! No modifications. No molestations. Low miles! Odometer reads 62.5K Low Mileage HAS NOT ROLLED OVER. Includes Original owners manual with owner's name in it! A complete set of extra pictures can be seen at this site: http://www.futurahouse.com/car Known Ownership History: This classic 4 owner car has always been 'adult' owned. Bought in June of 1963 by Mary M. Sullivan in Los Feliz, CA. The car was driven roughly 35k miles during the first 20+ years of ownership. The car was not garaged during this time and suffered some sun damage to the tops of the seats and the paint. This little old lady grandma car was regularly serviced by her mechanic Ted Bayless in Franklin Hill (Los Feliz area) at a Chevron Station at 1869 north Hillhurst at the corner of Franklin. When Ms. Sullivan was no longer able to drive, the car was purchased by her mechanic. The car was garaged from this time forward. During his ownership, he replaced some of the interior seats (described below) and had the car professionally painted inside and out. Most of the chrome was removed for the painting. (Unfortunately they did not properly tape off the VIN plate on the driver's side door when they painted it, but this could be properly stripped and cleaned up at some point.) The paint color is in the family of the original color, but not an exact match. Mr. and Mrs. Bayless drove the car roughly another 20+k miles during their ownership, principally to car shows and for pleasure drives. The car was then bought by Cary and Mary M. (Sullivan) Stratton in the fall of 2000. They found the car through a hot tip through the Falcon Club of America. They had owned 2 Futura Convertibles prior to this one and knew the cars well. They were looking for the "perfect" one this time around. They found it! The car was eventually featured in the Los Angeles Conservancy Modern Committee San Fernando Valley "How Modern Was My Valley" architecture tour. And it was later photographed in front of a historic 1963 Palmer and Krisel (Alexander) Home in Las Vegas for Las Vegas Home and Design Magazine. The Strattons drove the car roughly 5k during their 9 years of ownership. It was garaged in Toluca Lake, CA. The longest trip Ms. Stratton drove it on was from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. It drove across the desert like a dream! Body and Paint Condition: No rust ever and no evidence of damage or accidents (except the rear bumper as shown in pictures). It looks like at some point someone backed into a post or curb and the rear bumper was compromised around the right bolt and the body behind it has very minor paint chipping as a result. (See the pictures on the additional linked page of pictures.) It was never taken apart or improperly "restored." Underneath is dry, clean and rust free. I have NOT cleaned or detailed the car in any way -so the pictures show that it "needs cleaning." Sides are super straight. The only major issue is from when it was stored and something heavy -who knows what- was put on the back passenger rear fender. It is indented about 1/16" or so and can be popped out by a good body guy. (See the picture.) The floor boards and trunk base are solid. The paint has small flea bites and minor chips. Most, if not all, of these will iron out after a good wet sanding and polish. The color is not the exact match from the correct trim tag Viking Blue color. It is a bit more bright electric blue. They also painted the chrome trim that holds the interior door panels. But the paint seems to have protected this trim well. The front bumper is good and straight, however an inch or 2 of the chrome finish is starting to bubble as seen in picture on my additional pictures site. The back bumper is good and straight, but there is the spot previously mentioned where the chrome has chipped off and showing minor surface rust. Because of the size and weight of 2 door convertible doors, they often sag and don't line up quite right. Not with this car! Hinges are solid and straight. And absolutely NO known rust. I took some pics of the underside of the fenders where often water accumulates and rust occurs on other cars. There is NO evidence of any rust ever ocurring there. Electrical System: There is a newer radio installed but it stopped working some time back. It is probably just a fuse that went out, but you will have to research that. The existing radio was installed to fit the original hole. The dash has NOT been cut or compromised to fit the new radio. There are 2 newer speakers that were attached to the kick panels. They now make new kick panels with speakers in them as the wiring is already in place, that would be nice for the next owner to do. The turn indicator on the left side clicks fine. The right turn light does not blink in the dash (it just stays on solid until you finish the turn). This might be another fuse issue? The rest of the lights work fine including the brights floor switch. There is an under dash interior light that comes on when you open the door. Gas gauge, speedometer and temperature gauges work fine. Horn works. Much of the rubber weather stripping is still in good shape, but it will eventually have to be replaced. One of the window seals is Power Convertible Top: The top just needs a little bleach white on it to clean it up. The top motor and switch are in great working order. The mechanics of the convertible roof metal are all straight and aligned. This is important -my first convertible had a busted conv. top arm because it was not properly aligned. This is NOT a problem here. starting to go. (See additional picture of back passenger window.) The top seals well at the front where the top hits the front frame. It has been driven in the rain and it was tight. The top boot is included. The plastic zip-in back rear window is starting to haze up, but will clear up and last a little longer with some polish. The top well in very good shape. Ornamentation Condition: The plastic bezels with the Falcon emblems are all in excellent shape -no major hazing or obscuring. See pictures of the front and right fender gun sights, the center horn ring and the trunk emblem. All wheels have good condition hubcaps. The hubcaps only need paint touchup to get the original red, white and blue. Chrome is overall in good shape, but there is some normal minor pitting here and there and everywhere as to be expected in a convertible of this age. Interior Condition: Front has good old fashioned bench seat! Perfect for moonlit rides alongside the one you love! Interior vinyl seats have no known rips or tears -all in excellent cleanable condition. I believe that the insets and the sparkle piping are all original, but the outer part of the seat is the part that was replaced. The pattern is correct, but the crush grain of the vinyl is a bit larger than the 1960s vinyl. There is a picture that makes it look like a tear in the back of the driver's seat -it's actually just a reflection off the rear seat belt! The trunk interior has what I believe to be the original grey plaid fabric. It has a major tear in the middle of the bottom -but the spare tire cover is in solid shape and the tire hold down is in place. There is a newer spare tire in the trunk. The original door panels are just a bit wavey as you can see per pictures -but this is pretty standard on convertibles. Door rests are great, but I am actually including 2 extra door rests because sometimes these split after a lot of use and overexposure to sun. Back armrests are complete with their ashtrays! Passenger side back window crank needs a new spring clip and to be properly attached. (You will see pictures of the crank both on and off. http://www.futurahouse.com/car) Front visors need cleaning, but are intact and not split. There is a mirror on the driver's side that has permanently indented the visor, but as long as you leave it on the visor the dent won't show. Original steering wheel has intact working horn ring. I think the loop carpet is original. In any case -it's in very good shape. The light in the pictures make the carpet look splotchy, but they are not. There are 4 relatively new front and back Falcon floor mats. Brake and accelerator pedal show very minor wear. Front instrument panel has a minor scratch in the plastic on the far left side. Maintenance History: The car has had regular oil changes and newer tires since I have owned it. The first pictures show whitewalls. All 4 tires have since been replaced and have LESS than 500 miles on them!!! As you can imagine the prior owner mechanic had perfect maintenance records. The car was recently thoroughly checked over prior to driving from Las Vegas to L.A. The mechanic was Howie's on Main Street -one of the oldest and best mechanics in Las Vegas. Everything checked out great. Had all new belts (drive belts, alternator belt AC belt), new tranny fluid and tranny pan gasket. No oil or other leaks or any other mechanical problems were noted. ,_ 1 Mechanical Condition: What more can I say -she's so low mileage and well built that she is very mechanically sound. Engine Type and Transmission: Straight 6 Cylinders (one of the best engines out there) 170 cubic inch + Automatic Transmission shifts smooth. Engine could use a steam clean. Suspension is good -leaf springs in good shape. Engine compartment is clean and the paint on the rocker covers and air cleaner are original red. The motor is strong and starts up every time. Have to pullout the manual choke when it's cold or has been sitting a while. The motor runs smooth with a very slight tapping sound. No smoke coming out of the rear when it starts. Gas mileage is very good. I have seen it get up to 20+ MPG on the highway. Trim tag on driver's side door: 76A Color:E Trim: 52A Date:23A DSO:71 Axle:5 Tran:3 Decoded Trim Tag and VIN: Falcon Futura Convertible with Bench Seat Viking Blue (Metallic) with Lt. Blue D/L crush vinyl Made January 23, 1963 (Sold June 1963) Destination: Los Angeles, CA 3.50 to 1 Axle 2 Speed Fordomatic Transmission 170 CID Straight Six Engine Options.L Additional Equipment and Accessories: Gas tank has been reworked so that the cap and fill are INSIDE the trunk. Anyone who owns a vintage falcon or many other older cars know that there are major issues with filling up the tank with the today's pumps. With this convenient setup -there is never a problem filling her up. 1960s vintage aftermarket Air Conditioning is installed and works super cold. Safety Features: Front AND Rear seat belts!!! Car is currently in storage in Park City, Utah. I will be happy to make the car is available for inspection or driving. I will also be happy to take it to a local mechanic for a serious bidder. New to Falcons? If you are new to vintage cars -Falcons are the ultimate collector cars. The parts are super easy to find, because they are interchangeable with Mustangs, Comets, Fairlaines and other 1960s Ford automobiles. The size and the weight makes them relatively affordable in terms of gas usage. The engine is relatively easy for newbies to work on. They are just wonderful cars. This car has been all right in every way!!! It has been an all round pleasure to deal with. There were 18,942 Futura Convertibles with bench seats (series 15, model 76A) made for just one half year. They're just rare enough to feel special on the road, but not so rare you can't find parts or other people to get advice from ... Here are some fun links to follow: http://www.falconclub.comL http://www.falconparts.com http://www.tffn.net/(the ford falcon news) http://www.ffcclub.com http://www.falconregistry.comL Thank you for looking and good luck bidding!
