Vehicle Detail

I'm selling an all original 1988 Honda NX650 with very low miles.  I bought this bike from the second owner in 2007 when it had only 7500 miles on it.  The bike was in almost showroom condition and hadn't really been ridden in 5 years.  He was a shorter guy, so the seat height posed an issue for him.  He bought it in 1997 from the original owner when it had only 3500 miles.  This bike has never been off road and it shows. The plastics have no cracks and are in excellent condition for the age.  It is very hard to find these bikes, and when you do, they've usually been ridden hard off road.  Everything on the bike is stock except for a new set of tires and a shorter geared sprocket to make it better suited for highway use.  The tires are very much geared towards highway use and would be a handful if taken off road.  Everything else from the mufflers to the grips is original. The big issue with the bike is that I blew the motor in it when riding home from work a couple years ago.  I only had it for about 1500 miles before that happened.  I used it to commute 35 miles each way on the highway, and it really wasn't up for the challenge.  I didn't check the oil and ended up blowing the bottom end crank bearings.  I bought a complete bottom end for it from a 1995 Honda XR650 that I was told had around 5000 miles on it from a seller with excellent feedback here on ebay.  It is in great shape and will be a very easy fix.  All you have to do is take the original motor out, swap the cylender over to the new bottom end, and reinstall.  The bike currently runs and has good compression, so my neighbor doesn't think the piston and rings are bad.  You could always rebuild the original bottom end, but I never was comfortable with messing with the bottom end. Speaking of my neighbor, he's a top notch mechanic who races Kawasaki's, and was going to help me rebuild the motor.  I brought it to his house and he was to store it for me until we fixed it.  He had it for about 8 months and in that time I bought another bike and put the NX on the backburner.  When I finally got around to fixing it, I went to his house with all the parts and saw the bike sitting outside under a pine tree.  Apparently, he needed room in his garage, so he put mine outside.  It was sitting outside for about 4 months.  Long story short, I got mad and brought it back to my house immediately.  It's been in my shed ever since.  Needless to say, we never ended up fixing the bike.  The bike is still in great shape and would easily be brought back to excellent condition with a really good once or twice over.  I had been garaged it's whole life and was in mint condition before, so I was very upset to see it sitting outside like that. As a result, the front caliper locked up and needs a rebuild.  Also, the chain is now rusty and could use replacement.  You could probably soak it in penetrating oil, but chains for these bikes are pretty cheap.  The bike also needs a new battery.  It's missing a couple bolts there and there for the body, but not more than 10 at the most.  They would be very easy to source.  One last thing, the seat is now faded and has a stain on it.  You might be able to bring it back, or recover it.   This would be a very easy winter or weekend project and would not take much to bring it back to it's original glory.  Fix the motor, take care of the small stuff, and give it a really good once over, and you've got a great, rare bike for cheap.  I've seen these go for over $2500 on ebay and this bike when I got it was the nicest one I had seen.  I will include the bottom end with the bike if the bidding goes up over $1000.  If not, I'll sell it separately for $300, which is less than what I paid for it.  I will ship it, but it will be the responsibility of the buyer to make arrangements and pay for all costs.  I would prefer a local buyer, but I'll work with anyone. I have too much going on and I have to let this bike go.  I hope it goes to someone who appreciates these bikes and sees the value in them.  They never stopped making them in Europe and sell them overseas as the Honda Dominator.  They really were ahead of their time and is the predecessor for what KTM and BMW are doing now.  There aren't many of these left in good, original condition, and they are collectable in their own right.  The bidding starts at $500 with no reserve.
