Vehicle Detail
This is an example of the iconic NSU Super Max overhead cam 250cc. There weren't many of these imported and complete bikes are hard to find. They produced over 100,000 of the Max series in the '50's, mostly for the European market, so replacement parts are in good supply. This bike is fully functional for the street. The engine starts easily and runs sweetly. The transmission changes gears well with the typical NSU long travel shifter that takes a little getting used to. All of the lights work including the brake light and the charging system works well. With a plate off of my other NSU, I have driven this bike to a few vintage bike meetings in the Minneapolis area and it always draws a crowd. I bought this bike as a complete runner a few years ago. A previous owner had touched up the original paint in places and repainted the rear fender section, air cleaner cover, headlight and front fender. I buffed these parts out and repainted the top of the fuel tank with acrylic urethane. The original paint is still present on the forks, oil tank, most of the frame, tool box and chain guards. The shock bottoms, footpegs and seat frame have all been repainted. All of the shiney aluminum has been professionally polished including the wheel hubs which have new beautifully reproduced German made rims laced with new spokes. The tires are Avons with very few miles on them. The muffler is a new reproduction unit made in the Czech Republic and gives the bike that "gentlemanly" sound it should have. The front brake lever at the hub has been re-plated. I installed new reproduction tool/battery box key locks, so no bungie cords for you! The seat cover is an authentic reproduction NSU item. The original paint carries some scratches and small dents and the original chrome has some slight to heavy pitting but displays fairly well. There are two dents on the left side of the fuel tank and one small dent in the left fork leg which I tried to show in the photos. Otherwise the tank is in very good condition for re-chroming with its bullet proof German internal coating still looking very good. There is a small chip in the front fender crest. Although fully functional, the cables could use replacemant. The rubber knee pads have had better days. The horn and the dimmer swithch are both missing. These parts are readily available. The bike has a clean Washington title. Overall this is a straight and fairly unmolested bike which could be driven just like it is, taken to the next level or a great place to start a complete restoration with some of the hard work already taken care of. I have good connections for parts in Germany and I will work with the succesful bidder to secure any parts that may be needed down the road. I had plans to restore this bike but another project is draining my wallet so it needs to find a new home. I can haul the bike to the Davenport bike show for a reasonable price. I have set the reserve price at a VERY reasonable level considering the condition of the bike. Take a look at the photos and e-mail any questions or give me a call on my cell (612)-816-7373. Payment is to be by bank money order or cash within 7 days of the auction close. The bike needs to be picked up within 30 days of the close of the auction. Bidders with less than 95% positive feedback or less than 5 transactions need to contact me before bidding. I will assist the winning bidder with the shipping of the bike from my end once you have set up and paid for the shipper. I can bring the bike to a location that has a loading dock if that helps with shipping.
