Remote arming/disarming control _________________________________________________________________________ The SANS PAREIL (Without Equal) COBRA John Panfil, owner of Phoenix’s Anthem Motors, had built many stunning Cobras from the ground up with his team of master mechanics. Carol Shelby entrusted the exclusive sales of his Shelby American Continuation series cars to Anthem Motors in the Phoenix, Arizona area and sanctioned only one other marque, the Superformance version of his car. One customer approached John to produce a Cobra that would surpass the norm and raise the bar on what is possible with these cars. The result was the finest build to come out of this boutique Cobra shop. Some of the modifications were bold and some subtle but every area of functionality and aesthetics was focused on with ingenuity and innovative engineering modifications; and the attention to detail shows. This Prestige Elite model of the Cobra was ready for the road in 2006, after a great deal of time, effort and $112,000 of expenditure. This Cobra bears the authentic signature of Carol Shelby; his autograph appears on the glove-box door. The Cobra, being the ultimate open roadster, and the client favored living in very sunny climes, begged for a new interior; one that was not the typical black leather-- that is an obviously poor choice due to attraction and retention of heat. The interior was gutted and a custom upholsterer brought in to fit it with premium German dove-grey leather, accented with black piping. The dash was reinforced and re-covered as well. French stitching was applied to upholstering the center console. The door panels were remade with waterproof wood and fiberglass to house the speakers. Lush grey carpet was installed and small accents were applied in various areas such as the Roush shifter components, in red, and it was fitted with 5-point Simpson Cam-lock red racing safety harnesses. The seats were put on rails and the driver’s seat modified to allow an adjustable tilt for a more comfortable driving position. The sound system was quite a challenge as the Cobra doesn’t provide a lot of extra space for substantial installations and the tolerances are tight. But we managed to do a quadraphonic setup with four of Kicker’s best 650 component speakers, two in the doors and two behind the seats. The receiver is a Clarion receiver/CD with Music Catcher recording and is controlled by a large touch-screen. The face pops off to pocket for security when leaving the vehicle, if desired. The whole setup is powered by an 800 watt Phoenix Gold amplifier that sits, glowing, behind a custom Lucite installation in the trunk. A Sirius radio receiver and antenna has also been fitted. This powerful sound system can ably compete with the roar of the Cobra engine at highway speeds. A Clifford Matrix 2.5X Responder Alarm with Viper proximity security system and digital tilt alarm is a novel and useful feature. The car creates a buzz wherever it is parked and onlookers who approach too close or put their hands into its protective force-field are greeted with a loud warning chirping that can be heard from afar. The client’s wife was startled when he first parked the car in their home garage and she approached it, and as this Cobra is irresistible to touch, was then greeted by an angry warning from the car. Air conditioning systems for these cars are mostly inadequate so we procured an oversized, efficient unit that outputs really cold air and does a great job of cooling the open roadster, even at highway speeds. The vents are adjustable circular ball vents out of an aircraft and offer precise directionality. The AC compressor is an upgraded, polished unit and the lines are braided stainless steel. The custom fabricated ductwork is expertly fitted from the compressor to the output ports. The fitted steering wheel hardware has the removable option and the car offers two quick-release steering wheels, so the driver can quickly change between the leather wheel or the polished wooden steering wheel in seconds, with no tools required. There is a Fuel-safe fuel-cell with stainless hose upgrade for the fuel-injected engine. Hose lines are stainless steel braided and there is the Cool-flex radiator hose and expansion tank. Fuel is filtered by the dual filter and strainer system. The engine compartment reveals the Masterpiece polished Roush engine. The eight fuel injection stacks, each with their red air filter has to be seen to be appreciated. The engine alone was a $25,000 upgrade. Everything in the engine compartment is polished and all hoses are braided wherever possible. The computer/brain- box was especially fitted with a custom enclosure and special gasketing and made impervious to moisture for driving the car in wet environments. During construction, we found areas that could be improved in their functionality and had some custom parts fabricated and installed. Anthem Motors drew on its resources and in-house fabrication capabilities. It is unlikely that this effort could be repeated as effectively if you built this car today. The Roush 427 IR engine gives a substantial weight savings, compared to traditional engines fitted in these Cobras. It being a front-engine configuration, weight distribution is very significant in the roadability of the car. Taking curves at speed and road-hugging performance is much enhanced by the improvement to center-of –gravity and front/rear weight distribution ratio. The transmission is the Tremec T56 six speed with the high performance clutch and actuator kit with Wildwood driveshaft, mounts and hardware. This is the transmission of choice for mating with this high-torque power-plant; offering positive engagement, lower shift effort, enhanced shifting feel, reduced noise and improved durability and high-speed performance. There is a push button starter setup with a master disconnect lever. The Roush shifter package has been upgraded to the short-throw configuration with an aluminum shifter handle and chrome shifter knob. There are heat shields applied to the ceramic headers/side pipes. We have installed an SPF oil cooler and dry cell battery. The wheels are 17” Boyd-Covington polished 6-spoke wheels and the ultra wide-stance Michelin Pilot tires are massive and present a very broad and able footprint; in harmony with the tremendous horsepower being transferred to them. The rear tires are 315/35 ZR17 and the front tires are 275/40 ZR17 size. This provides a mean and stable stance and improves the handling. The front end gets a sophisticated touch with the 7” Tri-bar headlights. 3-M transparent rock shield has been applied in all areas that present exposure to road pebbles or debris. Consequently, the paint job has remained unblemished and as stunning as when the rolling chassis was delivered. A custom 4-wheel laser alignment was performed as well as a computer tire balancing and adjustment of the ride height and eccentric cams. Anthem Motors had a huge in-house Dyno machine and running track setup that allowed most of the break-in mileage to be generated on the machine under controlled conditions; performance measurements were monitored in real-time, with the results and statistics being analyzed and settings adjusted and tweaked on the fly. Clay Inniskeep, Ferrari and Cobra mechanic and engineer has tweaked and recently inspected and sorted out this car and he heard that I was going to sell the car, he remarked that the buyer would be getting a vehicle, where everything was together, avoiding the uncertainty and additional expenditures that usually come with buying an unknown quantity; a reliable performer that the new owner could just hit that button and go. It is said that Enzo Ferrari used to be often accompanied by a Ferrari mechanic, riding in the passenger seat of his car. Reliability and dependability come with the attention to detail and checking that each nut and bolt has been properly fastened and tightened. The type of individual that is drawn to create a Cobra is demanding and somewhat of a perfectionist. He sets a tentative budget for the project and when faced with saying no during the build to this or that improvement……he just doesn’t end up saying no and the result is almost always that the budget goes out the window. This is what happened here. As the car took shape and it was clear that it was becoming a masterpiece, the owner just kept saying yes and didn’t even tally up the expenditures till the completion. This is expenditure that will not be recaptured in the sale. The new owner gets the benefit of acquiring this car at a minimum of $50,000 discount to the cost of producing such a car if the buyer pays the “Buy it Now” price of this auction. This Cobra has only 675 pampered miles on it!! The Michelin Pilot tires were installed later, with only a few actual road miles on them. Perfect Fit and Finish is defined by this Cobra. This car is perfect in every way and is “As New”. It has been delicately cared for in a climate- controlled, spotless facility and driven regularly only to keep it in tune and top form. The owner has moved to the Caribbean and lives on a pot-holed, dirt-road that is more suited to a four-wheel drive Jeep than a Cobra. So, he is reluctantly parting with this amazing vehicle. It was built to be…. Without Equal. The Prestige Elite version of the Superformance Cobra is in showroom condition. This is a rare opportunity for a new owner with a lofty sense of vision; one who can appreciate the huge discount to the cost of construction and the achievement by one of the trade’s most qualified artisans; in build quality and refinement of detail of this finest example of a hand built super car.
