Vehicle Detail
1973 Mercury Capri. 73000 original miles, 2600cc, 4 speed. Please read to the end of this auction, there is a link to more pictures with shots under the car, in the engine compartment, the trunk, the interior, and even the original window sticker. Up for auction here is my 1973 Mercury Capri. It has the 2600cc V6 motor and a 4 speed manual transmission. I bought it back in July 2002 from the original owner, it had 66000 miles on it at the time, it now has just under 73000. I did a lot of work on the car to get it roadworthy. I replaced the entire braking system : master cylinder, brake lines, rubber hoses, front calipers, pads and rotors, rear drums, shoes and wheel cylinders. The car had some cooling problems causes by a blocked radiator, so I had this professionally re-cored, and also fitted a vintage flex-a-lite electric fan. I replaced the gas tank with a good used one that was steam cleaned, fitting a new float and fuel pump. I fitted a pair of headers, and had a muffler shop make a true dual exhuast for the car, the rear body cutout was welded up. The body is in unrestored but good condition, I have pictures indicating the rust areas. There are spots on the drivers door, around the rear window, passenger side rear wheelarch, passenger door, and on the hood under the CAPRI lettering. The sunroof wasn't working when I bought the car, it was partially open so I just put some yellow electrical tape over it. I have heard that certain other European cars share the same sunroof, but never got around to fixing it. Other than that, it's in good shape for an unrestored 37 year old car. The interior is is good shape apart from a few areas. The drivers seat does not tilt or recline, there was a problem with early Capri seats, and it looks like the previous owner had attempted a repair. So far, I haven't found a good condition seat to replace it. The tops of the rear seats have cracked, but the foam is still in good shape, this could be reupholstered. The rear parcel shelf is cracked along the back where the vent holes are. The dashboard has two large and one small crack in it, but there are dash caps available to fix this. I have fitted an aftermarket steering wheel, a Denon radio/cassette with a CD changer in the trunk, and speakers in the doors. However, I still have the original steering wheel, the door panels (I used another set I had with speaker holes already cut), and dashboard panel (again, I used another panel I had that was already cut). I also have the original Ford AM radio that came with the car. The wheels are similar to factory Capri wheels, but they are actually from a Ford Cortina 1600E, they are wider and are chrome plated. I had this car on eBay a few weeks ago, since then I have done some additional work. I took the carb off, cleaned it, and rebuilt it. The car now runs fine, it doesn't hesitate like it did before. I also replaced the steering rack and tie rod ends. I was going to replace the control arms, but when I jacked the car up, I remembered I had replaced these back when I first bought it. I put on a set of 16" Saab wheels, and drove it around the block, it drove straight as an arrow with no steering wobbles like before. When I put the original wheels back on, there was some vibration, I suspect the tires might be flat spotted. Pictures of the carb and steering rack can be found at the link below. The Saab wheels are not included in the auction. I also have a box FULL of information given to me by the original owner. These include receipts for service work that prove the mileage to be genuine, the original owners handbook, a service manual, and even a couple of returned letters that he had sent out to Capri enthusiasts in 2002 stating the car hadn't been on the road since 1991 and the mileage was 66851 miles. In the interest of full disclosure, it appears the car was in a couple of minor accidents, one in 1986, the other in 1991. The car is available for COLLECTION ONLY from NJ zip code 08081. You pick it up, or arrange to have it picked up, I cannot be involved in any shipping or transportation arrangements beyond being here when the car is picked up. If you are the winning bidder, here is how I would like to finalize the sale. I would like a $200 deposit paid within 3 days by PayPal or cashiers check. If you are picking the car up personally, I would like the balance paid in cash when you pick the car up. If you turn up with a check, don't expect to be leaving with the car that day until I take it to the bank. If you are arranging to have the car picked up, send me a cashiers check first, and after I have received it I will let you know you can pick the car up. If you send your transport company before then, they will be going away empty handed if I haven't received payment. I am sorry to have to list all these clauses, but there are a few rotten apples on eBay that spoil it for the rest of us, and I am not going to take any chances. My eBay feedback is 100%, so you can be assured I am not out to take anyone for a ride. Click on the link below to see more pictures : http://home.comcast.net/~leesonic/ebay/yellow73capri.htm
