Vehicle Detail

1966 GMC Pickup VIN 1002PD12445 283 8 Cyl Manual Transmission – 3 on the tree This is a good pickup in full working order. I purchased the pickup in 2002 and have used it until 2007 on my farm to haul lumber, wood, mulch, etc. During that time I drove it 150 miles on Interstates 66 and 80 in Virginia to our farm, and it does fine on the open road. I have used it less during the past three years, but still pick up lumber at Home Deopt and use it for errands. I have done a number of repairs and upgrades to this truck, but have not tried to restore it. It could be restored, but right now it is a good working truck. As would be expected it has rust, dings, obvious bondo repairs – but no significant damage. It drives straight on the open road and it has not been wrecked (according to separate mechanics who have worked on it), but the hauling box is not original (you can still see different color paint from underneath), and I do not believe the engine is original, although I am not for sure. When I purchased the truck off ebay in 2002 I was told by the owner the engine had been rebuilt in 1999 and had about 1000 miles on it. At that time the truck was in Centreville, Maryland. The owner had planned to restore the truck, but had not made any progress. Before that, I was told, it was used during the summers to haul a boat. I have put a couple thousand miles on it. The odometer works, but no way to know if it is accurate. Some background (if you are interested) General Motors started the 1960s with the C series pickups (for conventional cabs), and C1 designated a half ton pickup. This designation was used through the 1997 model year. The 1960s saw many improvements in GM pickups. The front actle load as increased, wheel base was increased; a new drop-center X type frame assembly was introduced, and they reduced the height of pickups by as much as 7 inches. These features all resulted in greater driver/passenger comfort. Cab width and height was increased and an extra large rear window was an option for the first time. The most significant change during this period was moving, in 1964, away from the dogleg windshield to the conventional curved windshield. This provided easier entrance/exit. The 230 and 292 six cylinder engines were standard, while the 283 V8 was optional (elsewhere I read that only the 250 and 292 were offered in 1966 GM pickups). General Motors was the leading truck in the 1960s. In 1966 GM sold 588,320 pickups. (120,992 from Pontiac, MI; 10,488 from Fremont CA; 468 from Baltimore, MD; 468 from Atlanta, GA; 468 from Tarrytown, NY; and 600 from Bloomfield, NJ) During 1960-66 there were three different GM pickups made – Chevrolet, GMC and GM Canada trucks. They all used the same main body, built by Fisher Body, with different hoods, grills, and tailgates. The VIN description for this 1966 pick up is as follows -- VIN 1002PD12445 10 is for model – C10, long bed, 6 lugs on wheels, coil front/leaf rear suspsension 02 is for 127” wheelbase P is for built in Pontiac MI D is for 1966 series 12445 is the unit number 1966 GM pickups are also identified by small cab window, amber front turn lamps, squared off letters in grill and 6 lug wheels. Odometer read 172,621 when purchased Some helpful websites for parts/information: Chevy Duty 6066 GMC Trucks www.gmc.com www.GMCPauls.com www.oldtrucks.com www.chevytrucks.com Comes with a 1963 shop manual purchased in 2002. This was the closest year I could find, and while not relevant in all ways, has been useful. Repairs, replacements and upgrades made in the past few years. To the cab:New arm rests, visors, glove box, floor felt and rubber, door sills, peep mirrors, wipers, door seals, door hinges, seat belts, seat cover To the engine: new heater core, oil pressure sender, heat riser, thermostat, rocker arm cover, oil pan/crankcase front end cover, timing gear/main bearing, fuel pump, rotor, cap, wires, plugs, hoses. Other: new pipe and muffler, rear axle, lens gaskets, gas cap, wheel cylinder, brake lines, master cylinder, ball joints/control arm bushing kit, wiring, ¾ inch treated lumber bed, front brakes, tires. The truck was last inspected in 2007. It always passed inspection, but sometimes needs a little wiring work. As with all old trucks, this one needs some TLC. Right now it probably needs new plugs. The passenger side door latch is broken. They can be ordered from ChevyTrucks.com. Likewise, the emergency brake needs adjusted, and the transmission needs adjusted (or maybe new grease), as it grinds when going into first. It has done this since I bought the truck, so nothing that keeps it from operating. Given the truck is not currently inspected, it would be encouraged to haul it home, but it could be driven. I am only selling the truck because we are planning to move and don't need three vehicles....
