Vehicle Detail
General Information Up for sale is a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback. The car has roughly 180K miles and was dealer maintained its entire life. I have a large stack of receipts that come with the car. This car is in good condition inside and out, with the typical dents and dings on the exterior. The interior is very clean and polishes up nicely. I bought the car with the check engine light on and the engine running rough at idle. Turns out one of the exhaust valves on the #4 cylinder has a small hole in it. The car starts, runs and drives well, but will not pass a state inspection with the burnt valve. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly at speed, and all electrical such as air conditioning, heat, lights, turn signals, etc. work well. I drove the car 7 hours from Kentucy to VA without an issue - this car runs well, but will need work to pass a state inspection. Exterior: The paint on the car is solid, thought it does have a few scrapes and dents, as do many cars of this age that were driven daily. To be sure, this car isn't perfect, but the paint cleans up nicely and the dents/bruises are minor. I've had the car on a lift, and have found NO RUST on the body. All lights are in tact and function. I restored the headlights, replaced bulbs, etc. when I bought the car. All wipers are new. Interior: The interior is the best part of the car - when I bought it, I removed everything but the dash and scrubbed everything clean. The seats cleaned up nicely, and all interior panels are present and clean. The front headrest is missing its clip - a minor detail for a car starting at $1, but worth noting. No cracks on the dash, no major rips/burns. One of the front seats has a small tear, half the size of a dime. The rear hatch comes with the roll-up cover and a luggage protector. Car still as a good spare tire/toolkit. Radio works well. All HVAC controls work well - A/C blows cold, heat works well, etc. All dash buttons work. Mechanical: The key issue with this car is the burnt exhaust valve. To get the car running perfectly, you'll have to either purchase re-manufactured heads (I've seen them online for $150-250) or buy the pieces separately (new valve from RockAuto is $10) and rebuild the head yourself. I'd do the work, but don't have shop space or time. For someone mechanically inclined and with a day or two to spare, this car can either be a great cheap driver or an opportunity to make some money. I just don't have the time or space to do the work. Locally, good condition used cars sell for $3,000-3,500. This car will sell for much less than that! Trans shifts smoothly. All interior/exterior electronics work well. Tires are relatively new. Bottom Line: For somebody with mechanical ability, this car is a very good opportunity. A bit of work and a few hundred bucks in parts will produce a great, reliable DD. Alternately, if you don't have a state inspection (as we do in VA/MD), you could drive the car as-is for quite awhile. I've done my best to describe the car accuratey, however the best way to get to know a car is to see it yourself. I'm available to show the car most mornings and evenings - just email through ebay and we'l set up a time. I'm not, however, a professional mechanic and I'm selling the car AS-IS. If you bid, you must be ready to buy. Transportation must be arranged by the buyer.
