Vehicle Detail
I have a 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer that I purchased roughly two years ago. The first year I just drove it and, apart from the horrific gas mileage, it was a great truck. It had its personality quirks, but was in really good shape for having over 140,000 miles on it. It crawls through snow without issue and was great for hauling things.Well, I believe that it now has a blown head gasket. The reason I believe this is the white “smoke” that began coming out of the exhaust and smelling of anti-freeze. That is the single largest thing that I want to disclose right off the bat. It’s also why I’m selling it. I can fix many things, but this is beyond my abilities, tools and workspace. The body has some bubbling on the fenders and such (see photos). The last owner repainted it. He also jacked it up about six inches and put oversized wheels on it. In addition to making the speedometer off, it also affects the mileage. When the speedometer says “45” you are actually going about “60”. Without knowing what the mileage was when he put those tires on, I have no way to calculate the actual mileage. But it would be higher than what the odometer is actually reading. All the power windows work. It does not have AC. Gauges all work. Someone put a CD player in it, but it has a CD stuck in it so it isn’t really a selling point. When I bought it, I put seat covers on the front seats and put new floor mats in it to protect the original interior. The interior is actually in surprisingly good shape. The dash has some cracking from sun and aging (see photo). The engine is a 360 V-8. It has a rebuilt 4-barrel carb, rebuilt heads, new alternator, new fuel pump, new fuel filter and fuel lines, all new hoses and new battery. All of which was done within the last year. When the heads were replaced, I blasted and painted the intake manifold and other parts with high-temp ceramic paint. A new valley pan, exhaust gaskets and head gaskets were used. The head bolts were all torque to spec. I have the sinking feeling that one of the rebuilt heads was warped. But I have no way to prove it. After replacing the heads, it ran great for a few hundred miles before the white smoke appeared. Four wheel drive works. The engine leaked oil and power steering fluid. The rear window goes up and down but sort of needs to be pushed in while going up if you put it all the way down. The tracks have hardened over time and aren’t as straight as they once were. The rear defroster hasn't worked since before I bought it. No lack of heat in the winter, however.I was told, when I bought it, that the Cooper tires were nearly new. I’ve put less than 1,000 miles on it since I bought it. So they are still pretty new tires. If you are a Jeep person who is looking for a solid foundation or parts or have the ability to deal with a blown head gasket, this may be for you. Sadly, it’s beyond me. I am planning on getting another 80’s Jeep Grand Wagoneer at some point. I really loved this truck. It just needs someone with more engine knowhow, tools, space and time than me. And I want to be completely up-front about anything I’m aware of on this vehicle. I’m not out to pull one over on anyone, I just don’t want this Jeep to spend the rest of its life sitting in my driveway. This is pick-up-only. I have no way to deliver it. Although it starts and runs, I have the feeling that driving it isn’t a good idea. But that’s just a gut feeling. Feel free to ask any questions. And happy bidding!
