Vehicle Detail
I have for sale a ultra-rare diesel 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia pop-top camper. I am selling this for my brother who is not computer literate. He bought it 12 years ago at Meister Import Motors here in Greenville, WI. I'm not sure where they got it but it has been registered in Alaska and had the oil changed in Madison, WI. At that time my brother was on a diesel kick and would pretty much buy anything that was diesel and had wheels. He turned out to not really enjoy it that much, and barely ever drove it. He kept it in a dry, climate controlled garage during that time. These diesel Westfalias are very very rare. It has the water cooled 1.6 liter in line 4 cylinder that is kind of tilted at an angle so Volkswagen could get it in there (the gas model would have had a air cooled "flat four" engine) There are some yellow stickers on the engine block that I have been told mean it's a replacement engine, but I don't have any documentation for it. Check out the Youtube video I made of it at www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuCkpv-g1ow This is a solid, good running and driving vintage vehicle. The engine starts right up and purrs like a kitten. Has a 4-speed manual transmission. It shifts well, and all the gears including reverse are working. The clutch is good. It does not have any fluid leaks to speak of (it hasn't left any spots in the driveway) It has 4 matching Firestone tires that hold air and have decent tread. Brakes work. Parking brake works. All lights work (high and low beams, flash to pass, running lights, signal lights, kitchen light, hazards dash lights). Cigarette lighter works for cell phone chargers and the like, but the actual lighter does not. Heater blower works, windshield wipers work All doors, windows work as they should. All locks work with the same key. The pop-up mechanism works as it should. All glass is good-No cracks. The AC outlets worked when it's "plugged in". The interior is overall in pretty good shape-no strange smells or major damage. Has all the original manuals, a dealer brochure, and an aftermarket repair manual. The paint is all original-the body is exactly what it looks like (nothing covered up). Overall the underbody is pretty clean. The speedometer works. The clock works. The glow plugs work. I believe it is supposed to sleep 4. The back seat folds into a bed, and there is an upper bunk when the top is up. It has a sink, and a 2 burner gas stove with tanks for each. The refridgerator runs on AC,DC, and propane. There is an extra screen with snaps on it, I don't know where it goes. The pop-up unit works well, and it does not take much effort to use. there is more than enough headroom to stand at the stove or sink with the top up-even for me and I'm 6'2" Has curtains for privacy in the camping area. There is plenty of storage space. The fridge gets cold, the tank water level indicator works, the water faucet works on both city water and tank water (pump in tank works), but I can't locate the key for the water tank filler. You can fill the water tank from the inside, or get a junkyard water tank filler with a key. There is propane in the tank, and I got the stove burners to light. The propane in there must be ancient! Now for the not-so-good: The body is very solid, but it does have a few rust spots. Under the drivers step area, on the sliding door track area, the bottom passenger side of the hatchback door, and behind the front bumper. I think the track and bumper area are surface rust, but the step area is starting to have a hole, and should probably be patched up before it gets worse. The body has numerous dents, dings, and a scrape. By far the worst dents are on the front passenger side. There are a few areas around the dents where the paint is missing but it's not really rust either. There are a couple holes drilled around the wheel wells where there must have been something like mudflaps attached(?) Overall the body still looks really good though, and I have even had some compliments about how nice of shape it is in. There is a stain on the rear bed mattress, but I did not see any noteworthy stains on any of the other seats. There is a patch on the canvas part pop top near the drivers side rear hinge. It is mostly behind the hard top and not really noticable from the outside. The headliner is sagging and has tears mostly in the front cab area. The front table and windshield curtain are missing. It is supposed to have an additional heater that runs off diesel fuel, but the fan that I believe mounts in front of the passenger side rear wheel is taken off. I'm not sure if there is something wrong with it, but it is included. The drivers side front sway bar link is broken. I think this may be a fairly common problem, I believe an upgrade is available. It does not clunk or anything. The radio and fridge run (on battery power) without the ignition on. If your not careful and left them on you could run the battery down. I'm not sure if they are supposed to be that way or not. The radio works, but is kind of beat up. The display is readable, but not while driving, you would have to have your face right in front of it. It is also missing a knob. The dome light doesn't come on when you open the drivers door, but it does come on with the passenger door open. The knob is broken off of the propane tank valve. You have to use a Vise-Grip to turn it. The fuel gauge doesn't work. There are aluminum brakets attached to the pop top for a ski rack, but I don't have the ski rack. The trim right below the stove/sink lid is duct tape. It's very carefully done though, it's hard to tell it's duct tape. Windshield washer sprayer doesn't work. Fire extinguisher is missing. The outside city water door in broken off, it does not affect hooking a hose to it. I don't mean to make it sound like there are tons of nitpicky stuff wrong with it, I am just trying to be as descriptive and honest as possible, and I dont want the buyer to be dissapointed. I am not an expert, and I don't know this vehicle that well so it's possible I missed something. Please feel free to ask about the condition of a specific item, and I will do my best to answer it. The vehicle is located in Neenah, WI 54956 I have the Wisconsin title, which is signed, clear, and doesn't have any leanholders, so it should be a smooth transaction. I am offering local pick up, or shipping that is arranged and paid for by the buyer. I can only accept payment in the form of cash in person, or the purchase price paid for through Paypal. There are so many check and shipping scams going around out there, I really don't feel comfortable taking a check.
